Having a secure network in your home or business is something essential, but often the router configuration, the gateway to the Internet, becomes a major obstacle.

I decided to write this article to show how to make an effective configuration on a D-Link router (one of the most famous brand in the market). Hope this may solve some of your questions regarding the matter.

This tutorial is based on D-Link DIR-300 model. But also works for other models too. Here we go.

1) Installing the Router

Perhaps this is the simplest step of the entire process: you need to connect a network cable to your modem and the other end into the WAN input of your router. These steps can be found in the users manual.

This facility is needed because then the connection from your modem to the router distributes to different machines that are networked.

2) Accessing the Configuration Page of the Router

With the router connected, it's time to enter the settings of your device. To access the page, enter the following address in any web browser:

In " User Name ", use the name "Admin", in "Password", you can leave the field blank.
Click "OK" and enter the D-Link router configuration screen.

3) Protecting your settings

To increase the security of your settings, it is important that you take some measures to change the overall router password and select the way of connecting your network.

3.1) Changing the password

Click on "Maintenance" and click on "Admin Setup" button. Create a new password in the field under "Administrator". Confirm and click "Apply". There, the general password is changed.

3.2) Choosing the type of active connections

To prevent computers outside your network to connect, you can choose to turn off the wireless connection from your router so that computers can connect only via cable.

To do this, it is very simple. On the router's main screen, choose "Wireless Setup" and uncheck the "Enable Wireless" box.

4) Setting the password for wireless connection

If you wish that your network has an active wireless connection for all users, it is important that you put a password to keep safety and prevent others from using the network.

To do this, within the router's home page, find the "Wireless" button. In the options, click "Wireless Settings". In the area labeled " Wireless Security Mode ", select the" Enable WEP Wireless Security "option.

In "WEP Encryption" select "128 Bit". Then, in the "WEP Key", you should include a new password for your wireless network.

When finished, click the "Save Settings" button at the top of this screen.

5) Change your SSID

If you prefer to change the name of your network, making it easier to spot by computers that share your connection, click "Wireless Settings".

Go to "Wireless Network Settings" in the "Wireless Network Name" field, add the name you want to give to your network.

Done, save the title by clicking on "Save Settings" at the top of the screen.

To disable SSID broadcast, select the "Enable Hidden Wireless" option. This will hide the network name, leaving it hidden from people who might want to share your connection.

6) Filtering MAC addresses

To filter MAC addresses, click the "Advanced" tab of your D-Link configuration screen and select the "Network Filter" option.

In this area, select the "Turn MAC Filtering ON and ALLOW computers listed to access the network" option. Basically, you are allowing the listed computers to connect to your network.

Enter the name and MAC address of the computers that you want to keep on your network, starting with the machine you are using to configure the router. Finally, click "Save settings" at the top of the screen.
