Navigating around the WordPress dashboard can be difficult, especially if you're new to it! Once you get a WordPress blog up and running, one of the first things you might want to do is add an RSS feed.

I've used WordPress extensively in the past, but I'd put everything down to write here at HubPages.

Just recently, I decided to get back into blogging. I immediately wanted to add my HubPages feed to my new blog to show my readers that I write here as well!

It took a bit of hunting, but I was able to quickly figure out how to add a feed. Fortunately for me, I'd had a bit of WordPress experience to work from.

So how do you add a feed? Easy! Just follow these simple steps to get an RSS feed up in just a few minutes!

Finding Your Feed Address

Before adding a feed to your WordPress blog, you'll need to know the address of the feed you want to add. This can be a bit tricky depending on the blog/website you want to add.

If you want to add a HubPages feed, it's formatted as follows:
Just change 'melbel' to whatever username you want.

For Blogspot/blogger, you can use:
Just change your blog to whatever your blog URL is. If you have your own domain, but use Blogspot, you can do:

If none of those formats work, you can always try this one:
(This is how my WordPress blog's feed is formatted.)

You can check to see if a specific format works, just by visiting the feed URL. If you've got it right, you'll be greeted by a list of blog posts. (Make sure they're from the correct site.)

If you're still having no luck locating your feed address, you can use Feedburner to help locate the feed address, just by entering the URL of a site.

Adding a Feed to WordPress

Now we're onto the meat of the subject -- adding the feed.

  1. In your WordPress dashboard (, navigate to the left side and hover over "Appearance."
  2. Within the "Appearance" menu, click "Widgets."
  3. In the middle of the screen, there will be a section called "Available Widgets." Locate the widget called "RSS."
  4. In the right pane, there will be various sections titled, "Widget Area for ____." Drag the RSS widget to whichever area you want. If you're not sure which area you want, just drag it to any area. (You can change it later.)
  5. Once you drag the widget to the widget area, then a box will open, asking for some configuration details. If it doesn't pop up, you can just click the arrow on the widget to open it.
  6. Under "Enter the RSS feed URL here:", put in the feed URL.
  7. Under "Give the feed a title", give it a name. (This is optional, but I recommend it since it tells your readers a bit about the feed.)
  8. Select how many items you would like to display. The default is 10 items. I think 10 is a bit on the obnoxious side, so I usually change it to something like 3 or 5. (This is totally up to you.)
  9. Click "Save."
  10. View your blog and see if you like it. If not, you can always go back and make changes to the configuration or move it to another widget area.

Within the configuration, there are some check boxes. I leave them unchecked for aesthetic reasons, but feel free to play around with different settings. Go with whatever you think looks best!

Congratulations! You now have an RSS feed on your WordPress blog. It's looking pretty spiffy now!

This is super when you take the time to go through all the instructions for using RSS on blogs. Of course with my simple and resistant computer mind I will read it at least a gazillion times..though you did a great job with explanation. Voting up and sharing on facebook..

This is a very useful guide. I put RSS Feeds in a couple blogs and back then I had to figure it out on my own, Wordpress in particular can be a little confusing; it would have been handy to have a guide like this.
