Over the years, important strides have been made in the field of computers making drastic changes on every bit of a computers structure. Current achievements have raised the bars on what is deemed possible in building computers expanding the horizons. With time, advancements have made computers more affordable, faster in processing speeds, sizeable enough to be carried around, small enough to be worn and with massive amounts of storage space. This has made them more accessible, less costly to produce and owned, led to huge energy savings and handled more applications and data. These kinds of advancements have left many mouths agape waiting to see what will come in the next years to the world of computing. This research highlights the future expectations in the field of computing.
Future computers concept
Computers of the future will feature three leading advancements
These include: size, processing speeds and storage space. First of all, their size is bound to decrease drastically. This is because of the achievements that have been made and others that are to be made on the microprocessor technology. Using nanotechnology, microprocessor chips are going to be made that will be in the size of molecules and atoms. This will come due to advancements in semiconductors enabling them to be placed in minuscule spaces. Currently, the smallest sizes of chips are the sizes of sand grains thus the expectations of reducing these sizes are valid in the likely future. As concerns the size of hardware, Mac Book 2015 proved small sized computers are more than just mere dreams because it has attained up to0.11mm in width. Computers of the future will need minimal or no cooling. Also, one USB port will be enough due to advancements of USB type C, which boasts of fast transfer speeds of data and fast charging.
Secondly, as concerns processor execution speeds, they are expected to be in the trillions of operations per second at the very least, the current top speed is at nine billion instructions per second. This will enable running of processor-intensive applications smoothly and getting results in fractions of seconds. Semiconductors may be replaced shortly because they have stagnated processing speeds because they have been strained to their ends to carry high voltages on very tiny transistors.
Research is being made to replace silicon semiconductors with carbon nano-tubes or transition metal oxides. Also, transistors are being developed to have switches that can amplify currents thus requiring lesser power and in turn reducing the heating problems of computers. Thus in future, CPUs are expected to run many instructions per second on their processors and significantly reduce heating up of the transistors. Argue that the core technology is going to advance with the aim of increasing parallelism, therefore, having more and more processor cores which to divide computations to and thus enhance their general performance and energy efficiency (37-47).
Thirdly, computer storage spaces are bound to increase a lot in the future. As strides are being into the future, storage is becoming less costly while their storage sizes are increasing. Also, a shrink in the overall hardware size of storage devices is expected. As the battle between hard disk drives and flash drives continues, fast advancements are being made by both to appeal to customers more in the future. The price/performance ratio is bound to be at its possible maximum in the future. SSDs currently boast of their ability to be written to or read faster than HDDs. However, their maximum storage sizes less than those of HDDs. SSD is the Future indicates that “performance, not capacity, is the future”. In future, SSDs are expected to grow in their capabilities and also use less energy. However, the two storage technologies are seen to become complementary rather than competitive. Together, they wade the way to the future of affordable and sizeable storage of the future.
Computing has been extended past the realms of local hardware machines. Currently, the technology exists to use computing resources elsewhere in an abstraction called the cloud, which is “playing an increasingly important role.” Cloud technology will improve in the nearby future, and it will offer more infrastructure, software, and platforms as services. Humans will only need to have a sort of a display device to run humongous tasks because the cloud will offer virtually anything. Companies will not necessarily need to have local servers or on site powerful computers yet they will run even the most resource intensive processes. Information will be available to all employees through their mobile devices. Cloud will eliminate the need for large physical servers, computing devices, different applications for different systems. Many individuals and organizations will rely almost entirely on cloud technologies in the future due to matters of more convenience and less cost. Currently, giant software companies have been focusing on “providing cloud computing solutions”. In future, cloud-based platforms will be improved, their availability will be at 99.9%, they shall have better security, will come in handy for backups and restores, will hold multiple organization databases and supporting many operations worldwide.
Reduction of the size of computers has enabled their integration into small smart devices that are wearable on the body. Wearable technology is set to boom in the nearby future featuring. Their uses will be numerous and will include support for real-time communication and health monitoring. There will be smart devices for almost all wearable; this includes glasses, belts, earrings, wristbands and watches and all these will offer some computing capability and will be able to communicate with other similar devices and humans through an interface (Ramparany, Olivier and Brouchoud 1).
Smart glasses and watches already do exist and in the next decade, man will have surely devised new sophisticated uses for these devices. They might offer streaming life of information, giving Intel as is needed by a particular context, keeping an eye on the user’s health, live communication with coworkers, providing great computing capabilities and still maintain its core functionality, that is, a watch will still give us time. These are mind blowing achievements, and some have already been actualized. Internet of things (IoT) will ensure that all these devices communicate with all other smart devices in their network to present to the user the most relevant information at any given time.
Computer connectivity will be enhanced in the nearby future to facilitate fast networking and communication speeds. 4G will be a thing of the past; Wi-Fi will offer incredibly strong speeds and LAN cables will be able to transfer data in Terabytes per second at the very minimum. Bluetooth 4.0 will be a thing of the past and will the next version of Bluetooth will be able to transmit data securely in over speeds of terabytes per second. USBs shall be more advanced than the latest USB type C which USB 3.0 Promoter Group says that beaten USB 3.0 by delivering faster speeds and efficiency in charging devices. Furthermore, it reduces the amount of time take in copying significantly and sends data and enable people to access much software for free over a web browser. Wireless charging will be offered to user devices, and this will be done with fewer energy wastes as of today which stands at 66% as Samsung is opting to utilize a communication network to transmit the power.
In conclusion, the future holds immense possibilities to the world of computing. Impressive achievements have already been attained by man, and even greater results are still in store. The merits of these advancements in computers is that they will see to the attainment of more major tasks that are currently either impossible or just requires too many resources. Inventions and innovations in computers are bound to make life easier in most aspects. One thing for sure is that a cloud of change is soon coming over computers in matters of sizes, shapes, storage capacity, processing speeds and connectivity thanks to science and technology.
