Internet utilization has been highly progressing to society. This being the case, research on how to protect users from online threats is vital. This paper will address the risk, rules, and mitigation measures to be put in place to curve these threats. This paper stands with the principle that different knowledge can enhance internet security for the generation public, especially the children. Additionally, the paper presents a comprehensive argument about the risk the users are exposed to on the internet.
Some of the risks included but not limited to: illegal interactions, distractions, and cyberbullying. The risks are as a result of exposing users to malicious information. On top of that, the paper will look at safety rules and measures to protect users from potential risks such as creating awareness to people, providing safer sites, and taking standard measurements.
Currently, the internet is used by individuals of all ages and all economic sectors. Online platforms have become an integral part of people’s lives. The internet has been of great benefit to society and the general economy. This paper provides online safety by creating awareness of the online risk involving online platforms, the online safety rules, and the measures to be put in place to ensure that malicious information does not threaten the users and make cyberspace safer.
Online Safety Rules
Individuals should understand the basic rules that will help them to stay safe in online platforms. Some of the rules include: keeping personal information limited in online platforms. People should not display information like a home address, and bank accounts should not be displayed on the online platform because people tend to hack systems, and such information may be of use to exploit you.
Practicing a safe browsing-internet is the most dangerous place to feel comfortable. Cybercriminals uploads apps that are attractive to the users, and if they try to access them, their computers get infected with malware. When malware infects an individual computer, it causes loose of personal information. Therefore people should avoid careless uploading of files.
Use a VPN to ensure that your internet connectivity is secure-the best option to ensure their rule is by avoiding public Wi-Fi. When a computer uses public Wi-Fi, it gives the hacker an essay time accessing information. Additionally, using public Wi-Fi can give other people control over your activities (Shillair.R et al. 2015).
Be careful of what you download in your computer- some online applications are set to have malware. Once they are downloaded on a computer, they give cybercriminals a chance to steal information. Therefore people should take caution on the kind of games and apps they download in their computers (Tsai et al. 2016).
The government can try to make sure that the content created in the online platforms is positive.
Providing positive information that positively affects a people’s development can be contributed by educating producers on the effects of harmful content on children and taking legal action to those who violate the content laws.
Choosing strong passwords in another safety measure that can be taken to ensure online safety. When people use simple password combinations like the year of birth or mobile number just because they are easy to remember, it is simple to be demystified by hackers.
Be careful about what you post and the people you interact with within the online platform. They say that the internet never forgets; this means that once you post something, you cannot take it back. For instance, posting money, expensive cars, or other valuable products can attract thieves in your homestead. Additionally, people who you interact with online maters. Hackers use fake social media account and profiles to attract their targets. Therefore people should be cautious about the kind of information they give to online "friends'.
From rural to urban, the twenty-first generation is termed as the digital generation. This implies that they have been highly used in the online platform. Therefore their behavior and character have been influenced by the internet. The risk comes in because countless unsuitable websites are termed as adds in the people's same platforms. The internet is inclusive of social media, which has highly influenced people’s behaviors. (Subrahmanyam, Greenfield, Kraut & Gross, 2020).
The online risks that the children encounter on the internet include harmful, illegal content, and inappropriate age content. These content impact children differently according to their age and listener morality. This negative content includes all the unlawful information uploaded on the internet. On the flip side, the information may be legal, but the content is not meant for the kids since they may affect them negatively. Some of these contents include pornography, gender, race, and religious conflict. If a child accidentally comes across such information, they can re-research the content to understand. Some online conflicts can also make children commit suicide or have anger issues (The U.S. Supreme Court Act and Child Online Protection Act 2020).
Cyberbullying is one of the common risks that online users are exposed to. The young generation is the most victims. During online gaming and online interactions, the youths can be bullied; this affects their behavior. Additionally, cyberbullying can negatively affect the living style of an individual.
In the online platform, people are exposed to cyber predators. These are the criminals who stalk people online to get information so that they abuse them. Most platforms that are mostly used by predators are social media platforms and online games.
Phishing-this is a trick used by criminals to trick people so that they can click to malicious links. Some of these emails pop when people are busy accessing something, and they may accept them without noticing. For instant, "hey, like this to improve your security." Once you click, they get information to tailor attacks to people and friends.
Measures to Ensure Online Protection
As discussed above, children are exposed to a wide risk in online platforms. However, countries are revisiting outdated policies to form policies that will effectively enhance online safety. These policies are formed to protect the children from being exposed to malicious information that may affect their behaviors and development. Some of the policies include providing positive content, taking legal measures, and creating awareness (Tsai et al. 2016).
Taking legal measurements.
Providing standard measurements can protect people from being exposed to cyber threats. This can happen by generally protecting data and information fed by any individual in their accounts. Therefore the government should ensure that the cyber climes are specific on the punishments involved when they are violated.
Self- and co-regulation.
Parents and other stakeholders can educate children on safe sites. Concurrently parents can regulate their children from frequently visiting the sites by buying them phones and tablets when they are of the right age or setting them not to access unsuitable sites (Reid Chassiakos, Radesky, Christakis, Moreno & Cross, 2020).
This includes adopting technical measures that will address the online risks (2020). Such a measure includes using technological mechanisms for reporting online abuse. Some of these mechanisms can be adopting technologies that will filter online information to protect users.
This is another measure that can educate the general population on the various risks involved by access the internet. This awareness can be created through campaigns, mass education, and availing internet education in all schools.
Due to technology's evolving nature, online safety measures should be put in place to protect people against online threats. The government should tighten policies to protect users by Cleary outlining the clime and consequences involved. Secondary, parents should be responsible for their children by regulating their internet access and educating them on safer sites. Additionally, all stakeholders should work in unison to ensure that safe content is available on the internet to improve online safety.
