Change Default Page Layout and Settings for Inkscape

If you do not already know, Inkscape is a free open source vector graphics software program.

I will be demonstrating how you can change the default layout and settings so that every time you open Inkscape it will be set to the settings that you want, like window size, border, background color, etc.

To change your settings open up the Document Properties Window – File >Document Properties or Shift+Ctrl+D.

Change the settings to how you want it; window size, page border, background color etc. I prefer 800×600 with a page border and transparent background, but you can do whatever you like best. Once you are done close that window. Now we are going to replace this changed document with the default one that Inkscape opens up every time you start the software.

You will have to locate your default.svg file in the templates folder of Inkscape. It may be a bit different if you are using Linux, but for Windows 7 this is where mine is located:  C:\Program Files (x86)\Inkscape\share\templates

Now save your changed document as default.svg in that folder. It will replace the default document that Inkscape opens every time you start the software. Go ahead and close Inkscape now and then start the software back up. It should work like magic. :)

I hope this helps you and have fun with Inkscape!

Thanks. Very useful, especially because it's short and sweet.

%APPDATA%\inkscape is where the templates folder of Inkscape is located in my windows 7.
