What Exactly is Artificial Intelligence?
We may have heard this term from various sources including but not limited to social media posts, websites, television shows, movies and even from our friends, but do we really understand what it means? What first comes into your mind when you heard about artificial intelligence?
While it is true that artificial intelligence may be in the form of a robot, it is also good to note that this new technology is already present in our society and the idea of it being a destructive machine is far from reality. We might be unaware that we are already utilizing and benefiting from AI-powered apps and software.
A Quick Glimpse on the History of AI
Artificial intelligence has long been the subject of studies of classical philosophers who attempted to describe the process of human thinking as the mechanical manipulation of symbols.
John McCarthy is one of the "founding fathers" of artificial intelligence, together with Alan Turing, Marvin Minsky, Allen Newell, and Herbert A. Simon. McCarthy coined the term "artificial intelligence" in 1955, and organized the famous Dartmouth conference in Summer 1956. This conference started AI as a field. (Minsky later joined McCarthy at MIT in 1959.) Source
The Human Intelligence vs Artificial Intelligence
The human brain is an organ that controls the overall activities of our body. Its development begins during the early life of a fetus. The development of the brain became faster when the baby was born. According to scientific studies, the human brain contains billions of neurons.
When we were born, we don't have any idea about the world that surrounds us and even our own existence. Slowly, our bodies began to develop. the senses including, sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch were all developed during the first year. Along with our physical development is our ability to learn things.
One of the major development of a person is when we learn how to talk and walk. Though learning may vary from person to person. Alongside the development of our physical body is the development of our brain. Researches suggest that the brain would take 25 years or more to develop.
Human intelligence can be defined as a general mental ability of a person for reasoning, learning and problem-solving. We learn from experience, adapt to new situations, understand abstract concepts, and use the knowledge to control the world around us. This ability makes humans a superior creature.
On the other hand, artificial intelligence is a program developed to simulate the human brain. Software that was designed to provide solutions to common problems which is usually done by humans.
Using the human brain as the pattern, it aims to develop a system that can function intelligently and independently.
These studies reveal that artificial intelligence can be able to learn how to improve itself over time without human intervention. This is what is known as machine learning.
What Is Machine Learning?
Machine Learning is a sub-component of artificial intelligence that trains the machine to learn on its own. It is a field of scientific study that uses algorithms and statistical models to train models to perform a specific task without explicit instructions. The machine will be trained to learn on its own by providing sufficient data.
Common Examples of Artificial Intelligence
Are you still wondering what is this thing called "artificial intelligence"? To give you some idea, here are some of the things that are powered with artificial intelligence that we usually encounter in our day-to-day activities.
Interactive Voice Assistants
What would it be like if you could have a companion that can answer almost all your questions and can do some tasks for you? This is one of the tasks that can be provided through the use of artificial intelligence. Powered by natural language processing, a subfield of artificial intelligence, it is now possible to interact with an application embedded in a device, called smart or interactive voice assistant.
There are several voice assistants being offered by various companies in the market. But two of the most popular are Amazon Alexa or more commonly called, Alexa, a virtual assistant developed by Amazon and Siri from Apple. Both of these assistants are integrated into a device to function. We cannot just simply buy an Alexa or a Sirs for that matter. We need a device such as a mobile phone or a speaker where these programs are integrated.
Alexa was first used in Amazon Echo. The personal assistant connected to smart speakers which can perform some incredibly brilliant tasks such as voice interaction, setting alarms and schedules, playing music, providing weather information and other timely information.
Siri, on the other hand, is integrated into Apple iPhone 4S, iPad and iPod Touch devices.
These applications are cloud-based services using intuitive voice commands to get this service to perform specific tasks.
There are many smart voice assistants that can be found across different devices available in the market. Some of them are Cortana, Google Assistant, Bixby, and others which are all powered by artificial intelligence.
Have you ever wonder why you are being notified when someone on Facebook uploaded a group picture you're on? This is the newest technology called the facial recognition system.
It's a system capable of identifying a person based on the digital image uploaded on social media, specifically on Facebook. If you already experienced this, it is one of the many applications powered by artificial intelligence.
A chatbot is a software that can provide support through conversation either via an auditory or textual method. Many website owners are now using chatbots on their websites to extend assistance to their readers and clients.
A chatbot is another form of AI-powered application.
On the final thought
Artificial intelligence is still in the development phase but we can already experience various applications that can help us in one way or another. Contrary to what some may be thinking, artificial intelligence is not a destructive machine but software that could assist us in our daily tasks.
