AMD Ryzen Showdown: 1700 vs 1600 vs 1400

Hello everyone and welcome back. Will here and today, I am bringing you an AMD showdown while pitting the Ryzen 7 1700 against the Ryzen 5 1600 and Ryzen 5 1400 processors. I was curious about which processor I would eventually purchase for my personal rig. I had planned on, without testing, purchasing the Ryzen 5 1600 processor a few months ago but recently, I linked up with a PC builder here in town and was able to get a few samples to test. I do not do a lot of content creation as far as creation that requires a lot of cores, threads, or overall horsepower. So, for testing, I didn’t test a lot of productivity programs. Actually, I only tested Cinebench R15.

Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 5? That is the question...

So, how did I test these processors? Well, I have recently purchased an MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon motherboard that I will be using in my future Ryzen machine. For the cooler, I continue to use my Corsair H60 all-in-one liquid CPU cooler and I continue to use my Corsair Vengeance LPX RAM which is in 2x8, dual channel configuration and clocked at 2800MHz. Powering the test system is the Corsaid CX650M semi-modular power supply. And to attempt to cut out some of the possible bottleneck, I will use my MSI GTX 1080 Duke. All processors were overclocked at a stable 4.0GHz and the MSI GTX 1080 Duke was overclocked with MSI Afterburner adding +60 on the core clock and +400 on the memory clock.

Processor Specifications

Now, let’s see what each processor has to offer. First up, is the Ryzen 7 1700. The Ryzen 7 1700 offers 8 cores and 16 threads with a base clock of 3GHz and a maximum boost clock of 3.7GHz. The processor sports 4MB of L2 cache and 16MB L3 cache. The processor is unlocked allowing us to overclock it. The total power draw is just 65 watts and can reach a maximum safe temperature of 95 degrees Celsius. The processor supports 2667MHz DDR4 RAM in dual channel configuration. Next, the Ryzen 5 1600 is a 6 core, 12 thread processor with a base clock of 3.2GHz and a maximum boost clock of up to 3.6GHz. The Ryzen 5 1600 sports total L2 cache of 3MB and a total L3 cache of 16MB. The processor is unlocked allowing us to overclock it and draws just 65 watts TDP while being able to reach up to 95 degrees Celsius maximum. As with the AMD Ryzen 7 1700 processor, the Ryzen 5 1600 supports 2667MHz DDR4 RAM in dual channel configuration. Finally, the Ryzen 5 1400 processor which is on par with the Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 processors as far as TDP, maximum temperatures, and system memory configurations. The Ryzen 5 1400 however, has just 4 cores and 8 threads with a base clock of 3.2GHz and a maximum boost clock of 3.4GHz with a total L2 cache of 2MB and a total L3 cache of 8MB. The Ryzen 5 1400, like the Ryzen 7 1700 and Ryzen 5 1600 is unlocked and therefore is capable of being overclocked. Each processor comes with a Wraith stealth cooler, which is surprisingly, a really good CPU cooler.

Benchmark Settings

So, with all of that out of the way, let’s get to the benchmarks. As with all of my testing I do, I test each game/program with 5 runs of each at maximum settings within each program. All games are tested at 1080p. Now, here are the benchmarks.

Benchmark Summary

Up first, I ran Cinebench for each processor in both single thread and multi-thread. The Ryzen 5 1600 and Ryzen 7 1700 were equal in single thread with a score of 162 while the Ryzen 5 1400 scored not too far behind with 159. In multi-thread testing, the Ryzen 7 1700 ran away with this with a score of 1734 while the Ryzen 5 1600 scored 1336 and the Ryzen 5 1400 lagged far behind scoring just 691. So, the Ryzen 7 1700 was 23% faster than the 1600 and the Ryzen 5 1400 was 60% slower.

In gaming, I tested the most CPU intensive games I could think of which consists of Battlefield 1, Mafia III, Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation, Hitman, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and Total War Warhammer. I will not discuss these results in depth but instead will place the results in charts below. The Ryzen 7 1700 and Ryzen 5 1600 were fairly close in performance to each other with neither really pulling away. There were a few odd findings, in my opinion with the Ryzen 5 1600 beating out the Ryzen 7 1700 in a few of the benchmarks such as Battlefield 1, Hitman, and Total War Warhammer average frame rates and the Ryzen 5 1600 also bested the Ryzen 7 1700 in the 1% low frame rate in Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation. In average frame rates, the Ryzen 7 1700 and Ryzen 5 1600 were essentially dead even in performance while the Ryzen 5 1400 was 18.9% slower. In 1% low framerates, the Rzyen 5 1600 was just 0.58% slower than the Ryzen 7 1700 while the Ryzen 5 1400 was 23% slower than the Ryzen 7 1700.

Comparison to other tech reviews

Comparing results with some of the other tech reviewers, the results above are on par. I checked out Steve's comparison of the same processors over at Hardware Unboxed on YouTube and for the first time in my comparisons of similar tech, I have benchmarks on par with his benchmarks. I did push these processors to get them to equal footing (4.0GHz) with Steve's settings for a fair comparison even at the cost of really high temperatures; Ryzen 5 1400 reached 90 degrees Celsius at times.

Conclusion and Final Thoughts

So, there you have it. The Ryzen 7 1700 and Ryzen 5 1600 are essentially equal in gaming performance while the Ryzen 5 1400 lags pretty far behind. In productivity, the Ryzen 7 1700 kills it, however. At any rate, if you want the best bang for your buck in total overall performance, you cannot go wrong at all with the Ryzen 5 1600 as it is 31% cheaper for very similar performance, especially with gaming and as I am more so concerned with gaming, I’d definitely go with the Ryzen 5 1600. I would also assume that the increases in performance in the upcoming Ryzen+/Ryzen 2 line, whatever AMD will call it, will be similar and I would still recommend the Ryzen 5 2600 over the Ryzen 7 2700 processor.
