Old Japan in 3 Dimensions

Beautiful Antique Images in 3D

These three dimensional images from Old Japan were created from antique Stereoscopic photos by T. Enami and provide a unique window to a bygone historic era.

The pictures were animated by Okinawa Soba and more pics and info about the photographcs can be found on his Flickr page.

Wiggle Stereoscopy is possibly the simplest stereogram viewing technique, is to simply alternate between the left and right images of a stereogram. Closing one eye and moving the head from side-to-side when viewing a selection of objects helps one understand how this works. Objects that are closer appear to move more than those further away.

Most wiggle images use only two images, leading to an annoyingly jerky image. A smoother image, more akin to a motion picture image where the camera is moved back and forth, can be composed by using several intermediate images (perhaps with synthetic motion blur) and longer image residency at the end images to allow inspection of details. Another option is a shorter time between the frames of a wiggle image.

dave-sutton on June 04, 2012:

I love this effect and tried to make a wiggle animation from just one photograph. It is possible but involves a lot work and the end result is not brilliant.

LynetteBell from Christchurch, New Zealand on May 29, 2012:

great collection of gifs

Paul (author) from Montreal on April 03, 2012:

@martyp lm: No special glasses are required, the 3D effect is caused by animating between two perspectives, kind of like the perspective shift you get from closing your right and left eyes quickly back and forth.

martyp lm on April 01, 2012:

Do you need special glasses to see these better? I sort of see 3D with the bare eye but I am curious if I need those blue/red glasses?

neuromancer lm on March 30, 2012:

Awesome, I had no idea you can make such 3d effect with 2d screen.

MindPowerProofs1 on March 29, 2012:

Amazing!

thomanna on March 11, 2012:

That's cool! I knew combining left and right images created a 3D effect, but I didn't know all you had to do was flash back and forth between the images to create the same effect. Crazy. Great lense!

anonymous on February 22, 2012:

Double Awesome ! Best Wishes :)

MelonyVaughan on February 11, 2012:

KonaGirl from New York on July 08, 2011:

A couple of them are cool, like the Freaky 3D Eyeball, but for the most part I don't see the point of jiggling back and forth. Glad to see you are a Luke Brown fan too.
