I love everything weird and colorful in this world and I try to live a life that will make the world a little better once I'm gone.
Eighties Vintage Plastic Charms
Every girl in the 80s had a few, right? Those beautiful brightly colored cheap plastic charms on a cheap plastic chain. Never before and never since has a pile of colorful plastic jewelry meant so much to a girl. They were crazy cheap, and EVERYWHERE. Some girls trading them with their friends, others simply could not part with them.
Each little charm had the clip, a bell, and the charm hanging off a little loop. Bicycles, fruit, animals, electronics, frying pans....they were all available....and I HAD to have them.
At age seven, it was my mission in life to have enough of these to reach from one wall of my room to the other. No need for the chains; I wanted to just link all the charms in succession. And, I was successful.
Check out my collection of 80s plastic bell charms, and how you can get your hands on some charms now (in case you didn't hold on to your collection).

Up for Auction: 80s Plastic Charm Bracelets & Necklaces
If you never had any, or can no longer find them, buy some charms on ebay! It's interesting to look there to see some you remember having, and to see some you never saw before - almost like it was when you were searching the bins for one back in the day.
How Many 1980s Plastic Charms Did You Have?
It seems to be that people didn't have one or two or even five of these charms....they had a whole bunch.
How many did YOU have?
Anatomy of a 1980s Plastic Charm
Prized Possession of a 1980s Girl Who Grew Into a Geek
An 80s plastic charm featuring a whistle with Robin, Batman's loyal sidekick!
What a cool crossover piece of pop culture history! It's geek-tastic!
If this little vintage charm whistle isn't the envy or every female batman collector of every geeky plastic charm collector, I don't know what is. It's cool for at least 5 different reasons.
Fruit Bell Charms
Everyone had fruit charms for their 80s charm bracelet!
I think everyone had a few pieces of fruit in their charm collection. After all, it was the eighties - the time of Strawberry Shortcake and her berry fruity friends, the time of Pac Man and his cherries, and the era of the banana clip.
I think it was also the colors. We just LOVED colors in the eighties. Somehow we've forgotten how cool colors are. Some cars only come in black, gray, white, or tan. How boring is that?!
I have in my vintage charm collection strawberries, grapes, cherries, apples, bananas, and ice cream. Ice Cream is a fruit, right?

Do you remember about these plastic charms?

They are coming back!! I saw a big display of them in my local Michael's craft store yesterday (April 1, 2017). I am SO excited. Just wish I had saved mine to pass on to my daughter.
Erin on October 10, 2015:
PUH-LEASE BRING THESE BACK!!!! Little girls would still go CRAZY over these things! My little girl would be in heaven.
Valerie Hamby on June 12, 2015:
Dies anyone remember the company who put these out? For those of you who have them still, see if you can see a name printed on the charms. Thanks
Bettina on December 04, 2014:
Hello everyone! I love these!! I didn't have them when I was young but I've been collecting them off and on since 2006. My favorite: the long boombox! There are a few that I am looking for to complete my collection. So if anyone has any that they would like to sell, my email address is email@example.com

With 3 daughters, I think we had hundreds of these. I gave them to charity years ago, with the exception of a toilet with a working lid. It was a family joke to put it on the Christmas tree every year. One of our little granddaughters lost it this year, and I have been trying to replace it. They aren't as common as I thought! Hopefully I can find one by next Christmas.

I have 3 daughters and it seems like we had hundreds. Unfortunately I gave them to charity with the exception of a working toilet charm which magically appeared every year on our Christmas tree. One of our granddaughters lost it this year, so I am searching for a replacement so she won't feel so terrible about it.

Its really Interesting to see the necklaces popular in 80's and learn about the fashion at that time, they look unique and pretty!
Mysti37 on November 09, 2013:
I still have several necklaces (I bought them in every color I could find), and I bought charms in every color to match the chains. I keep each necklace in its own large ziploc baggie. They are in mint condition, never having been worn. I have at least 500 charms, but each necklace has charms of its own color. I keep these necklaces in our safe since they apparently are becoming quite a collectors item, and starting to get somewhat expensive. Mine aren't for sale, at least not yet. Maybe in another 20 years. Excellent lens, by the way.

I dragged my mom out every time a new one came out. I wish I still had my huge collection. At times I would buy double so at the time I had over 200 lol.
thecrochetcubby on August 28, 2013:
What a totally rad lens! I had totally forgotten about the plastic charms. Thanks for the memories.
SMW1962 LM on August 25, 2013:
My daughter used to have a bunch of these. I think I loved them more than she did!
April King from Texas on August 20, 2013:
I loved them!!! Wore them clanking around my neck to school. I am so surprised that I didn't get them taken up by my teacher for playing with them! They were SO awesome!
anonymous on August 13, 2013:
I loved these. I only had a few, but my friends had tons and I was always so jealous! I remember the bike and whistle, but the rest are kind of foggy. There's nothing like a stroll down memory lane when life was the way I wish it could have stayed, fun and simple with lots of cheap, plastic toys:)
Ean Brandon from United States on July 31, 2013:
I was alive for 5 months during the 80's... But after seeing these, I wish I was alive for longer... I am sure I would own about 7 jillion of these!

CCGAL on January 16, 2012:
I bet my daughter would remember these - I know she loved Strawberry Shortcake and the Care Bears in the 80's. I enjoyed seeing these - now if I come across them at a swap meet, I'll know that they are collectible!
anonymous on January 12, 2012:
@anonymous: Donna, I have no idea what a collection like that would be worth. Did you sell it? I miss my charms so much... I had a load of them when I was a little girl. I'd love to start a new collection, but I can't find them anywhere apart from Ebay (which tends to be a bit overpriced in my opinion). If you are still looking for a buyer, I'd love to see some pictures and maybe find out what a ballpark price would be. You can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Cool lens. It takes me back a few years, like 20 almost!
anonymous on August 12, 2011:
I have a collection that I started in 1985, and at the current time I have at least 500 charms and approximately 15 of a combination of necklaces, bracelets, etc. There are maybe only three or four doubles.
K Bechand from NY on July 18, 2011:
I remember pawing through bins and bins of them at flea markets - got 12 for a dollar - I also remember several that were overabundant when looking - the record, the racket, and the roller skate ! These were the best ! (I think silly bands tried to be the next 80's charms - but I do not think they were NEARLY as cool ! )
Craftyville on July 06, 2011:
I forgot all about these. I'm pretty sure I still have mine. I know I had the pink record and tennis racket, they were my favorite.
anonymous on July 02, 2011:
@anonymous: Thats flipping amazing! I unfortunately was not born in the 80's, but today I discovered these bell charms and I'm really intrigued by these little plastic charms! It's so Me! I don't even have 1 charm. But I plan on collecting like... Right now!:)

I STARTED COLLECTING "BELL CHARMS" WITH MY NIECE. I HAVE A COLLECTION OF OVER 600 CHARMS, INCLUDING ALL THE TRAFFIC SIGNS, CHRISTMAS, FRUITS, ETC. IT REALLY IS A FANTASTIC COLLECTION. MY NIECE AND I DIVIDED ALL THE CHARMS BY COLOR AND PUT THEM ALL ON SEPARATE NECKLACES BY COLOR OR
SPECIAL. THE NUMBER OF CHARMS ON EACH COLOR COORDINATED NECKLACE IS "FULL" WITH SOMETIMES 2 CHARMS ON ONE LOOP. I ALSO HAVE ALL THE "BIG" CHARMS AND NECKLACES, THE BELTS, THE BRACELETS, ETC. I WONDER WHAT THIS COLLECTION IS WORTH AND IF ANYONE WOULD BE INTERESTED IN PURCHASING IT. IT REALLY IS RATHER SPECTACULAR WITH THEM ALL BEING
COLOR COODINATED. I HAVE THE EARPHONES, THE LITTLE BOOKS WITH REAL PAGES, THE RECORDS, SKATES, SKELETONS, ETC. ETC. COMMENT BACK TO ME PLEASE. THANKS, DONNA

I wonder if this was an American thing because I don't remember these. I do remember the bright colours though. Scary how 80's things are coming back.

@Christene-S: My Coke bottle charm used to have real liquid inside. It has since dried up. :(
Christene-S on January 13, 2010:
I don't remember how many I had...a necklace full.
I remember a Madonna one in the shape of a star (with, I think, liquid inside?) and a mini notebook one that you could write in. Now I wish I still had them :P
