Jewelry Poll, Determining Jewelry Trends

Gayle Dowell is known as the Prairie Jeweler. She creates jewelry using prairie grasses and wildflowers in fine silver and 22k gold.

I've been a jewelry maker and designer for five years now, and I've been intrigued by the differences and preferences that people have about jewelry. I like to fashion my jewelry according to what is popular and add my own favorite elements to my designs. I put this survey together so that I along with other jewelry designers can get an idea of current preferences. Please take a few minutes to cast your vote. Thanks for participating!

Jewelry Poll

Just answer the following question as it pertains to your preference in jewelry. When you click the vote button, you can view others answers as a percentage of votes to the options given for each question. All answers are confidential.

My Findings on Metal Type

I'm finding that sterling silver as well as fine silver to be very popular sellers in my shops as well as white bronze. I've even had one wholesale account want to sell nothing but silver and white bronze jewelry items. It would be interesting to see if this is just in the handmade jewelry area or if this is true for manufactured jewelry as well. Maybe it has something to do with the economy. It may be interesting to see if it shifts as the economy improves.

Staying up to date with jewelry trends is important to the jewelry designer and maker. Keeping up with trends will help you find your niche market and will allow you to target your market and sell more of your designs.

Keeping Your Jewelry Safe

Keeping jewelry safe from scratches and damage especially when traveling can be a challenge. Here are a few options to keep your jewelry organized and safe.

Is this a biased poll?

There has been some debate in the comments about the possibility of this poll being biased in that many jewelry designers have taken the poll. Are we getting a true reading of results? What do you think?

Do you think the poll is skewed because jewelry designers have participated in the poll?

Did you learn something about your jewelry preferences that you had not thought of before? Did some of the responses from others surprise you? Want to share your thoughts?

Did You Enjoy the Poll?

My Dad used to make jewelry and I have some of those pieces:)

Monica Lobenstein from Western Wisconsin on February 01, 2013:

Some interesting results. For example, how people like dangle earrings more than other types. I can see how this would be useful to a jewelry designer. Nice job putting together the questions!

DeepaVenkitesh LM on December 07, 2012:

yes I loved this poll, hugs.

anonymous on December 02, 2012:

No, not really..It really showed what the jewelry trend is that people prefer.

anonymous on December 02, 2012:

I thought this was a very interesting poll that lets everyone know what type of jewelry trend people prefer.

Interesting. Made me think.

Delia on September 24, 2012:

I don't like taking polls, but I have an interest in jewelry and design. I just visited Paris and was surprised to see many Boutiques with charming dainty jewelry, very few chunky and gaudy things...I love what they are doing!

Linda Pogue from Missouri on September 10, 2012:

Fun to do. Blessings.

I enjoy reading this lens, nicely done! Squidlike

anonymous on April 20, 2012:

Thank you, I DID learn a lot from the poll. My biggest surprise was that those who preferred delicate over chunk were in the majority.

Debi Jones from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho on April 18, 2012:

Yes, I enjoy poll lenses

anonymous on April 15, 2012:

Yes, I learned a lot about style preferences that was different than I assumed. Thanks!

E L Seaton from Virginia on January 05, 2012:

The poll was nicely done and asked some great questions.

Inkhand on December 30, 2011:

Wow, can't believe that over 8% of the people would wear more than 6 pieces of jewelry, isn't that kind of heavy.

Mary Crowther from Havre de Grace on December 28, 2011:

I enjoyed this poll and the jewelry was very pretty as well.

anonymous on December 28, 2011:

I didn't surprise myself, but I'm looking forward to seeing how much my answers have in common with others.

Stacy Birch on December 26, 2011:

Interesting lens.

Joan Haines on December 25, 2011:

Yes, it made me think about what I like. It's fun to share opinions, and jewelry (as long as it isn't mass produced, boring jewelry) is a favorite topic of mine.

anonymous on December 23, 2011:

@anonymous: I agree Sharyl, I too think it would be interesting and fun to poll non-designers and makers of handmade creations; such as the average jewelry wearing women and men. I wonder if there would be a difference.

Avi Wolfson from Massachusetts on December 23, 2011:

Great poll, that was enjoyable. Thank you for sharing!

This was nice to see what everyone else enjoys and likes, very fun!

Gayle Dowell (author) from Kansas on December 10, 2011:

@anonymous: Thanks for taking the poll. I have found much of the answers on the poll correlating with what is selling from my shop. I've found it is reinforcing much of what I already knew from selling experience, but it also has given me more ideas for future designs.

anonymous on December 10, 2011:

I love polls where I know all my answers are right because its just personal preference, I hope this works out to be a good tool for you!

Gayle Dowell (author) from Kansas on October 13, 2011:

@anonymous: Yes, you are right Sharyl about it maybe being biased toward designers, but as jewelry designers we are part of the population that also purchases or makes our own jewelry. I've changed my mind several times about whether or not this would affect results, that is why I put the question in as to how many were jewelry designers. Still undecided on this one.

anonymous on October 12, 2011:

It's interesting to take the poll myself and to see the trends, Gayle! Thanks for putting this together and for sharing! I'm thinking the results might be influenced by how many jewelry designers have taken the poll, but I suppose we buy a lot too! It would be interesting to see the results of the non-designers only. I wonder if they vary significantly or are pretty much the same. Interesting stuff though, no matter how you look at it! --sharyl

anonymous on September 09, 2011:

Really enjoyed looking at the results and learning so much. Since I am a jewelry craftswoman, I didn't take the poll. Thanks for doing this. Linda Beers Aydlott

Tolovaj Publishing House from Ljubljana on July 28, 2011:

Interesting poll, I enjoyed it, hope to help you determine trends. All the best!

anonymous on July 24, 2011:

Yes thank you for offering this. I enjoyed completing the survey and seeing the results.

Gayle Dowell (author) from Kansas on June 10, 2011:

@anonymous: Thanks for your comment. You've made many good points. Fashion trends do change so often, that it is hard to survey what is popular at any given time. The economy has a part to play also. I've noticed a shift toward jewelry items that are neutral in color to go with more wardrobes vs. specific color. But there are also long time favorites that stand the test of time, specifically metals such as sterling silver.

Something else I've been thinking about and striving for: working with materials and styles I'm passionate about is better than mass producing what is already out there. Handmade jewelry should be thought of as an artform, a creative process that produces a unique piece. Otherwise, why not just buy from a store?

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts. It has me thinking more about my purpose in designing.

anonymous on June 10, 2011:

I really enjoyed doing the poll (found out I'm a black sheep fruitcake!)

No really, it was good, but as they say, the only thing you survey in a survey, is what sort of person likes doing surveys!

As a wearer, and buyer of heaps of jewellery I was interested to compare results with what I know of ebay bidders, which is like a giant survey in itself. I noted some results exactly aligned and others the polar opposite.

The thing with ebay is, that most of it is mass produced, so the items usually come in various colours so you can directly compare which colour sells. Also, they are repeated over and over, so you can see if it was just a one off anomaly that a particular item attracted a higher price, or if it consistantly sells better than others.

Also, the survey made me notice that what you say is often different to what you do. I would never ever say that white is my favourite colour in jewellery, but I know that I have sometimes been more desperate to get some white items than any other, and had to bid hard because they are always so popular. Yellow the same. That's the reverse of the survey results, and it points to this weird thing that happens - you don't think you like it, but when you see it you do. Other bidders must be equally keen, but I bet like me, they'd never say yellow or white as a favourite if asked.

I guess that's the joy of original designing, you make it, someone sees it and likes it. That's how fashion trends start. People couldn't possibly know they liked something beforehand because it doesn't exist yet, or at least, they haven't seen it 'in situ' often enough yet for it to grow on them.

I like big and bold. No doubt, no exceptions, dyed in the wool BIG stuff lover. But recently went overboard buying heaps of items in a dainty flowery lacey style I had never seen before.

I have an advantage of family in fashion media, and I always get gifts of the strangest things by top designers from all over the world before release. Usually handed over with the comment, "Yeah, I know this is whacko, but believe me everyone will want one" I think - oh reeeally? Hmmm. Why? But it comes true.

A very successful designer once told me - I don't ask people what they like because if they already know, the fashion must be nearly over.

So to the adventurous of you out there, go crazy! Show me something I haven't seen.

Great poll. I just wished it included more materials, such as resin.

Leah (Owner/Artisan Jeweler) of Savvy Silver Jewelry @!

This was a great poll! I loved your images and your beautiful jewelry. I think your questions were spot on and I found it interesting that I, along with most others, do not necessarily buy jewelry in their favorite color. The market trend does seem to be sterling silver as the predominant metal of choice ... Thanks!

@essensu: Thanks so much for your comment. This is exactly the kind of input I've been looking for. I've heard from several friends that the trend is "the bigger the better". This is something I will be mindful of when I make my pieces.

essensu from New York on April 04, 2011:

I'm not a jewelry designer, but I do buy handmade, artisan jewelry and would like to interject, I had a hard time at xmas finding large, sterling hoops. So many artisans just make dainty, small earrings. The trend is big and bold. My 20 something daughters also like to wear bold earrings. Just sharing. I wish more designers made larger earrings.

anonymous on March 30, 2011:

It was and interesting poll. :)

It's a good sounding board for trends among mostly jewelry designer.

At the time I took this poll approx 73% of the 60 people who participated were jewelry designers.

I would love to see what the non-designer results show!

Thanks for creating this poll.

@Blackspaniel1: Sorry! I specifically targeted women in this poll. Maybe I should do another for men only!

Blackspaniel1 on March 20, 2011:

This was difficult for me. I suppose women find it easy.

anonymous on March 18, 2011:

Yes it was really enlightening.

Gayle Dowell (author) from Kansas on March 05, 2011:

@anonymous: Yes, I did too. It may be that it is easier for some to clasp over other fasteners like lobster clasps. I've had people not like the magnetic clasps because of it not being secure.

Gayle Dowell (author) from Kansas on March 05, 2011:

@3pearls: That would be interesting to know. I've added the question to the poll. Thanks for the suggestion!

anonymous on March 05, 2011:

Yes, I found it very interesting

3pearls on March 05, 2011:

Yes, it was interesting. I'd love to know how many of the answers came from jewelry makers

anonymous on March 04, 2011:

Very interesting! I'm surprised people like toggles on bracelets.

anonymous on March 04, 2011:

Very interesting and helpful for jewelry designers.

anonymous on March 03, 2011:

Thanks! Questions were relative to questions when making my jewelry

anonymous on March 02, 2011:

I think it was an interesting poll and it made me realize I design for others not myself.

anonymous on March 02, 2011:

Thanks! This was fascinating! The overwhelming preference for silver at the beginning surprised me.

@Catyann: Thanks so much for participating!

@anonymous: Thanks for participating. Love you mosaic jewelry. Very unique and love the colors. I'm glad the poll will help you with your designs. BTW, I see you are from Cleveland Heights, OH. I was born in Fairview. :o)

Gayle Dowell (author) from Kansas on February 28, 2011:

@anonymous: Thanks for taking the poll, Lucy. I had some glitches taking the poll as well. My internet connectivity is slow at times and I think that affects it.

Catyann on February 25, 2011:

This is a great poll! Got a lot of insight into how I will design, price and market my jewelry. Thank you for providing this useful information.

anonymous on February 24, 2011:

Thanks for sharing this poll! I'm a mosaic tile jeweler and since all of my jewelry is very colorful, I found the results regarding those preferences to be very insightful! My unique (and reversible!) pieces can be found on P.S. Your silver and mixed metal jewelry is quite beautiful. Love your style!

anonymous on February 18, 2011:

Thanks for this info which is helpful to me, too. (Had to click vote button repeatedly to get results but maybe I did it wrong?) Some questions I could have answered in more than one way. Your photos are wonderful and I like your jewelry, too.
