My 7 easy steps to making the best Pandora style bracelet
I would like to share with you my seven easy steps to creating a Pandora style bracelet that you will be truly proud of.
Whether you want to transform an existing bracelet, are looking to buy a new bracelet for yourself or want to buy one as a gift then I will share my own personal experiences with you.
Maybe you received a charm bracelet as a Christmas or Valentine's gift, or you might be lucky and get one for your birthday, and be in need of inspiration to make it look fantastic.
As the proud owner of two genuine Pandora bracelets and an ever increasing collection of charms and beads I have learned how to put together an aesthetically pleasing bracelet and know what is needed and what isn't.
I hope that my top tips to creating the best Pandora style bracelet will help you to make a bracelet that you will be proud to wear.
How To Measure Your Wrist For a Pandora Bracelet
Before you Buy A Bracelet, Measure Your Wrist
European charm bracelets are available in many different styles, colors, materials and lengths.
The first thing to do is to measure your wrist, at its widest point. You then need to add 2 cm's to your wrist measurement, and then round to the nearest whole figure. If your total measurement is 0.5 or less than round down and if it is 0.6 or larger than round up.
Don't be tempted to go for a larger bracelet than you think you'll need. You might think that adding charms and beads to your bracelet will take up a lot of space, but when you add charms to your bracelet it can stretch a small amount. I ended up having to buy a smaller sized Pandora bracelet due to the combined effect of losing weight and owning an already loose bracelet.
Genuine Pandora bracelets are available in six lengths from : 17cm's (6.7 inches) to 23 cm's ( 9 inches).
Chamillia bracelets are available in four sizes from 17cm (6.7 inches) to 20.1 cm's (7.9 inches), which makes them better suited if you have a smaller than average wrist, but not if you have a larger than average one.
Biaggi bracelets are available in an amazing twelve sizes from 6 inches to 8.75 inches.
Trollbead bracelets are available in eleven sizes from 5.4 inches to 9.4 inches, which gives the widest choice of sizes, perfect if you are shopping for a child or a larger built woman. With Trollbeads please be aware that you order your clasp separately, but it is taken into account with the bracelet measurement, so the bracelet you receive will be an inch less than expected (i.e an 8 inch bracelet will actually be 7 inches long!)
Please watch the video below if you need help with measuring your wrist correctly.
Choose The Material Your Bracelet Is Made From
These popular charm bracelets are available in an ever increasing variety of material and style.
Sterling silver is probably the most popular metal for a Pandora style bracelet to be made of.
I would always advise against buying a silver plated bracelet, especially if you want your bracelet to stand the test of time. However, if you are looking to buy a bracelet that will only be worn a few times or is for a child then just be careful of the quality when you are buying.
You can also choose from oxidised silver, leather, silver plated, solid gold, gold plated and stainless steel.
How to Make Gold Affordable
Solid gold will make your bracelet very expensive.
If you like the idea of gold but want a cheaper alternative there are several options:
1. Choose a silver or leather bracelet with a solid gold clasp.
2. Choose a silver or leather bracelet but plan on adding a few gold accentuated charms.
3. Go for a gold plated bracelet (I would not recommend this for a bracelet you want to keep and treasure).
4. Choose a bracelet with a gold plated fastener.
Leather Charm Bracelets
If you are choosing a leather charm bracelet you will also have a choice of colors. The color leather that you choose for your charm bracelet will help to define its style. It may also help to determine the color of beads that you place upon the bracelet, if you do not want to clash.
Wrap around bracelets are popular right now, but just because they are longer do not think that they will need more charms to fill them.
Less is usually more with this style of bracelet, and I would be careful not to overfill it, as the bracelet can stretch and become damaged.
If you decide on a leather bracelet you have some choices
- What kind of fastener do you want, and in what material (i.e. gold or silver)
- What color leather do you want (lots of colors are available).
- Do you want a single length or a wrap around style?
My Essentials For a Pandora Style Charm Bracelet
- Two clips (hinged to fit a bracelet with the threads on) or with rubber inserts for plain bracelets.
- At least two Murano glass or Swarovski crystal beads.
The rest is up to you.
Adding Charms To Your Bracelet
What beads, charms and clips you buy to put on your bracelet will be determined by the style of bracelet and the effect that you are trying to achieve.
Some people choose to have one special charm on their bracelet, or one charm in the middle of two glass beads.
You might just want to add a few charms and beads.
I have clips on the middle threads on my Pandora bracelet, with two Murano lass beads and four charms in the middle of the beads.
Other people choose to fill their bracelets to the max.
You might also want to consider a purpose built storage system for your bracelet and charms, to keep them safe and looking at their best.
How to Add Beads and Charms to your Bracelet
Hints on how to choose which beads and charms to add to your charm bracelet:
- Pick a theme, for example Valentine's Day or "mothers and daughters" and build your bracelet around that theme.
- Choose a color scheme to work to.
- Choose beads that represent special events in your life, such as a memorable holiday.
- Buy beads and charms that you like but do not have a special meaning..
- Buy a ready to wear bracelet.
None of these ways is better than the next, it is entirely up to you how you decide to add charms to your bracelet.
How to choose your beads and charms
Firstly, unless you are working to a very tight budget, I would always recommend buying sterling silver charms. This is because charms cast from cheap metals do not tend to be made to the same quality, with the charm often lacking definition.
In my experience I have also found that the plating can be quick to wear off, which leaves you with an unpleasant discoloration.
And if having decided on a color scheme but you then fall in love with a bead that does not match, well then buy it, and either start a new collection or mix and match it in with your existing beads.
You need to also consider how "balanced" the bracelet will appear.
When you are choosing the charms, try to balance where the glass or crystal beads are placed, so that they are evenly spaced out. Also, consider adding one or two dangling charms to give the bracelet added depth.
A tip that I learned is to place your bracelet on a clean cloth and then place the beads and charms alongside it so that you can see how they will look before actually loading your charm bracelet.
There is nothing more frustrating than carefully threading on the charms and fastening the clips, only to realise that you have missed a charm, or you have a bead in the wrong place!
