Looking for hair color ideas? Look at your skin first
When searching for hair color ideas you should first look at what complements your skin tone. Depending on the type of skin you have, you'll want to stay away from certain colors.
- Yellow Undertones: Avoid deep gold
- Pink Undertone: Avoid red or strawberry tones
- Pale Skin: Avoid deep dark colors
- Dark/Tan Skin: Avoid one-tone blonde (honey or 5 tone blonde looks better)
So what hair color should you look for?
- Brown/Gold Undertones: Try golden or honey colors with red highlights
- Rosy/Ebony Undertones: Try brown or black with burgundy highlights
Want to be safe when coloring your hair? Just go a couple shades lighter or darker than your current color. Or try temporary hair color like Loreal's Color Pulse which will wash out after a couple showers.
Types of Hair Coloring
Permanent Color: Uses hydrogen peroxide to change your hair color. If you haven't found your perfect hair color idea don't use permanent coloring. Over-processing can damage your hair and make it look dull. Hydrogen peroxide is used to open the hair cuticle and form the color.
Semi-Permanent Color (or temporary hair color):Doesn't change the actual hair color, and helps slightly change a tone or maintain a permanent coloring. These will last between 8 and 20 showers. With semi-permeant coloring the cuticle is only opened up slightly, so the color is not permanent. Loreal's Color Pulse is one of the most popular semi-permanent dyes.

I'm naturally blonde, but I like to mix it up and change it. I have been almost every hair color. I'm currently blonde, but I am letting my natural color grow out. I'm thinking about going dark. In my experience, if you are going from blonde to dark you need a filler. Otherwise, your hair will be dull and have a greenish tint to it. You can get all that stuff at Sally Beauty Supply for cheap if you compare it to salon price. The first time I went dark I went to a salon and got charged $40 just for the filler. At the beauty supply I only paid $5, and yes, if you just follow the instructions, it works just as well. I have pale skin but lots of other undertones so I guess I can pull off any hair color, but for me, if my hair is short than the dark looks bad on me. Just a tip for those thinking about a drastic change.

i have medium tan skin that is a tiny bit paler than normal because it is winter but normally it is REALLY tan and naturally ash blonde hair that i have highlighted for about four years to a honey blonde. After it is highlighted it has a lot of undertones that look AMAZING! My eyes are always changing depending on the lighting, what i am wearing, and how close you r to me. The two colors that they normally change between r green and blue but if you r right up next to them they r washed out and have a little bit of everything in them. They also glitter as they catch light. All and all i love my hair color but i need a change for a little bit. I want to dye it medium brown with temporary dye but 1- i am scared it will majorly damage my hair and i will never get it back to my normal color 2- that it will look awful! Plus i really only want it different for 4-6 weeks. What do you guys think? Do you have any sugguestions?
P.s. I don't know what undertones r in my skin but i look amazing in bright blues pinks and greens (that's usually when my eyes look blue) and i look pretty good in neutral colors but my eyes don't stand out Quite as much. I avoid yellow and gold.

Once your hair is colored, keeping it that way is another story. Depending on the shampoo you use and the condition of your water (especially well water, that can wreak havoc with your hair), your hair color can fade fast or change depending on the mineral content of your water. To keep your color longer, use a good color depositing shampoo or conditioner. http://www.haircareusa.com lists quite a few, such as Tressa Watercolors, All-Nutrient Color+Shampoo, and ClayPac. If your hair (especially blondes) is changing because of your water, check out the Malibu Crystal Gel Treatment. An amazing product that removes chemical, minerals, chlorine, etc. while leaving your hair color intact. http://www.haircareusa.com carries that too. Great products to keep your hair color looking its best.

I have naturally light brown/dirty blonde hair and med tanned skin. I have bright blue eyes. Iv been from choc brown to blonde, back to brown, and then in an accident attempt to redye my roots brown and replenish the shine to my hair i ended up jet black. I got so many compliments saying the black made my eyes stand out. But i get sick of my hair really quickly so I went to a colour specialist wanting to go back to my natural colour...or a couple of shades lighter. But she refused to do it...basically saying it'd take me 2 years to get back to my natural colour?! I did it myself in a couple of months with dye out of a bottle. we're coming into summer now and I really don't know if i should stay dark, go blonde or even go red!! people tell me I suit all colours thanks to my skin tones and eyes. I have NO idea what colour to go!! :S

Finding the best hair color can be tricky especially if the color on the over the counter box is different once you apply it to your own hair, most woman are adding color to hair that has been color treated before so the end result comes out in a different shade.
So to get the best hair color you want to apply it to virgin hair, or you may have to do color correction.

You get bleach blonde into brown by bleaching it.
Diana.Try a dark brown with red undertones first so that you can decide if you want red or not.
Skin tone matters a ton in picking a hair color. During the winter I go back to my natural super light blonde color as my skin lights but during the summer my skin gets super tanned so I dye it medium brown. My blonde with dark skin looks icky. I've dyed my hair black before and it made melook washed out. Love this page but it needs some fixing.

amy sharp on June 07, 2010:
i am nataully ginger and have far skin with thousands of frikles and i hate. so last year i took a massive chance and go to the hair dressers and get my hair cut shoulder length and get 3 different shades of blond staright through it. ik only had half a head done as i wanted the bottom to stay my normal colour, this was great until my roots come though and it cost a bomb to keep getting it done. so earlier this year i took another big turn and go out and get brown hair die from the local supermarket and this was the best thing i have ever done to my body it made me look older, made me look pretty , well thats what people said and it was fantastic to keep on tp of the cost as it only cost my mum 6 pound every 4 to 6 weeks to do my roots.
so IF U GET HIGHLIGHTS u need to be prepared to spend loads of money.. Skin colour don't matter i look better with brown hair n frikeles instead of ginger!!!!!!

I Don't Usually Change My Hair Color But I Have Medium Brown Hair And I Have Recently Decided To Get One Blonde Highlight Right Behind My Bangs. I've Never Done It Before I Just Want Something New And Edgy. Is It A Bad Idea? I Also Have A Medium Dark Skin Tone.
Always changing my hair. on May 29, 2010:
I change my hair ALL the time. I easily get bored of a color. I have had from BRIGHT RED to BLEACH BLONDE. And personally the skin tone doesn't matter at all. It is if YOU yourself can pull of the color and in conclusion if you look good in the color no matter what. I have medium tone but sometimes very pale. Right now I have VERY dark brown hair and have very pale skin right now. But I am soon getting my hair dyed a purple/brown/blond/red. Similar to the red/blond/brown that I had before the hair that I have now. So I disagree with most of this article. So really it isn't much help to me.
anne on April 23, 2010:
Hi, i have natural auburn hair and pale freckly skin, although i always try to wear fake tan and dye my hair as i hate my natural look!! In the past i have dyed my hair all colours(including med-brown which was far too dark and i looked awful)! For years i had my hair highlighted (with bleach so it didn't end up orange) but eventually all my hair ended up bleached blonde. I absolutely loved having blonde hair & got loads of compliments, but i hated the roots (they were visible even when i came away from the hairdressers as they wouldn't put bleach right up to my scalp, and my roots came through looking orange next to the blonde). Anyway i went to a well known hairdressers and asked to go a light warm brown. They had to keep reapplying colour as patches of my hair wouldn't take the dye as the blonde had 'ruined' my hair - so it ended up really dark. Every time i washed my hair a load of colour came out and it ended up really faded, washed out and unhealthy looking. i then went somewhere else (6 weeks later) & they put ash colour on my roots to neutralise the red and a light brown on the rest, which i thought was a tad too dark at first but again it has washed out loads and is back to the dull faded look. i can't help wanting to go back blonde as everyone has said how good i looked with blonde hair & i feel really plain in comparison to how i used to look. my boyfriend says he loves red hair but i don't think i have the confidence to go red (and would defo not go my natural colour as in the sun it looks too 'ginger'). Please help :)

I disagree with alex about seasonal colour change. In the winter you may be a bit paler so all the more reason to warm your skintone up.It really depends on the individual, if they've been blonde all their life and don't want drastic change then put some warm honey blonde or rich copper tones in the winter and brighten it up in the summer with some sunkissed highlights.

momo on August 10, 2009:
I agree with colouring to match your skintone.
Which is why I reckon you should always consult a professional stylist before colouring your hair.
That way they can advise you on what colours will best suit your skintone, also how to maintain your colour to keep it looking vibrant, also when you get regrowth they will apply your colour accordingly to prevent colour build up which could damage your hair or make it harder to change your hair colour in future.
If your planning on going from very light to dark or vice-versa DEFINITELY go to a professional as they can do this process much easier and prevent any major damage to your hair also perfect your colour.
being a hairstylist I have changed my colour many times over the years, and have found what works and what complements my skin. It took a lot of playing around and trying new things.
taryn, all colour can cause some damage to your hair. Its how you maintain your hair and how often you colour. There are a lot of very conditioning colours out there though.
A lot of semi/ midway colours are very conditioning on the hair and fade nicely.
Choke Frantic from Newcastle, Australia on May 08, 2009:

the comment that people should dye their hair darker in winter and lighter in spring is completely FALSE, peoples skin generally gets paler in winter so why would you want to off set that with a darker color, a lighter color would look much better plus in the spring you wanter a darker color to naturalize a tan duh

Well I really think it depends on your skin tone and your natural hair color. I have a light brown and I have a really light tane, it pretty good but I am thinking about dyeing it a darker brown like dark chocolate color. But like I say I personally think it does depend on your skin tone and hair color, but also its what you think because I mean its your body.

Isn't the best hair color that looks good on your skin your natural color?
Lewis Smith on August 31, 2007:
I fully agree with the author that the hair color you chose should complement your skin tone and should in fashion. One can go in for permanent hair color if you do not feel like playing with colors. For the people who are fairly bold can try on temporary colors which can be changed after a few weeks.
