How to Dress Like Johnny Depp

Skeptic, cinephile, bookworm, gamer, history buff, armchair scientist, occasional YouTuber, habitual cringe inducer, reluctant realist.

The Style of Johnny Depp

From head to toe, tattoos to eyeglasses, and necklaces to bracelets, Johnny Depp has one of the most recognizable styles in show business. Some say it's grunge, some say it's multicultural, and some say it's just plain weird. But everyone at least seems to agree with one inarguable fact: It sure is unique! Not to mention pretty cool looking.

While no one could ever completely replicate the style of Mr. Depp, it sure doesn't stop them from trying! And below I'll assist in that desperate endeavor by listing some of Johnny Depp's most typical styles and gear (tattoos included).

The Tattoos

Johnny Depp has numerous tattoos all over his body. And while one can't be certain that the list below includes all of them, here are the ones that are visible in photographs:

  • "WINO FOREVER" (formally WINONA FOREVER) on Depp's right bicep.
  • Portrait of the head of a Native American on Depp's right bicep.
  • Symbol from Depp's movie The Brave on the inside of his right forearm.
  • An inverted triangle on Depp's left bicep.
  • A heart engraved with "BETTY SUE" on Depp's left bicep, honoring his mother, Betty Sue Palmer.
  • Three small rectangles on his right index finger.
  • "3" on his left hand, between his thumb and index finger.
  • A skull and crossbones with the inscription "DEATH IS CERTAIN," on his lower right leg.
  • A small unknown symbol on the inside of his right ankle.
  • The inscription of Depp's daughters name, "LILY-ROSE," in ornate lettering, on the left side of his chest.
  • The inscription "JACK" and a bird in flight, on his right forearm, to honor his son Jack.

The Hats

Johnny Depp is a man known to wear many, many, many hats. But as far as his preferred headgear go, it looks as though his apparent preferred choices seem to be the classic trilby and fedora hats.

While the popularity of these hats were at an all-time high in the way back days of gangsters, dames, prohibition, old-time business men, the rat pack, Indiana Jones, and the everyday people of the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s, the trilby and fedora appeared to fall out of style sometime after the hippies came along and the more laid back styles of the youth came into fashion. This is about the same time that everyone started ditching their three piece suits and ties for the more casual jeans, t-shirts, and baseball caps (sigh). Since the 2000s, however, these classics of men’s headwear have had a huge resurgence in popularity (mostly among hipsters, but let’s overlook that) and come back into style among the new, younger generation. Since then they’ve been marketed to both men and women in an attempt to capitalize on a new retro fashion trend.

Depp is often seen wearing these hats when out in public during interviews, award ceremonies, and during his private life when all of those the pesky paparazzi are peeping on him through the bushes, taking pictures. Going by most of those photos (thanks paparazzo!), when Depp wears his trilby’s and fedoras it looks as though he’s typically more inclined to wear hats with wider brims (think Indiana Jones) and simple, solid colors like blacks, browns, beiges, greys and (rarely) whites. The quality of the hats he’s been seen to wear range from the pristine to ones so grungy that they look like they’ve been passed down through various generations of some very hard working men.

The Necklaces

Johnny Depp is known to sport a whole mess of necklaces around his neck. They create a sort of tribal, worldly traveler look. Like most of his jewelry, the necklaces vary on occasions, but here are some of the ones he's typically seen wearing:

  • A tiger tooth on a black leather cord.
  • A silver dog tag etched with the portrait of Argentine Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara.
  • A silver figure of Lord Ganesh, the Hindu deity considered the remover of obstacles, on a black leather cord.
  • A longer silver chain with a round medallion engraved with the name and birth date of Johnny Depp's daughter, Lily-Rose.

A Tiger Tooth

One of the necklaces Depp has been spotted wearing on numerous occasions has been that of a single tiger tooth that he keeps on a black leather cord around his neck. I’m not familiar with the backstory of why he has this (assuming there is one — maybe Depp had an epic battle with tiger at some point in his life and took the tooth as a souvenir; how awesome would that be?) but, hey, it’s cool regardless of why he’s wearing it. Although, I have to admit, it is a bit disconcerting when you think about the poor tiger in question. Who knows, though, maybe it was a baby tooth that just fell out on its own. Yeah, that’s probably what it was.

Unfortunately, tiger teeth are pretty difficult to come (believe it or not), which means that I found it more than a little problematic to find any online for your purchasing pleasures (sorry!). But hopefully the link below will suffice; it was the best I could do for now. As with all of the items presented on this list, if you can find one that better matches that of Depp’s style, please post it in the comments section at the bottom of the page and I’ll be sure to add it here pronto.

Che Guevara Dog Tag

Rubbing elbows with the mysterious, impossible to find tiger tooth (mentioned above), another item that we can find hanging around Johnny Depp’s neck is this unique, army-styled dog tag that’s etched with the memorable image of Argentine Marxist revolutionary, Che Guevara. You know who he is, right? He’s that guy from all those nifty t-shirts you always saw the countercultural kids wearing (don’t worry, they probably didn’t know anything about him either). And with interests in such famous figures as Hunter S. Thompson, Iggy Pop, and Franz Kafka, Depp was almost certainly about as countercultural of a kid as you could have found (and from the look of him, he hasn’t changed much in that respect). So it’s really no wonder that he’d be familiar with Che.

As with the aforementioned tiger tooth, I am once again completely oblivious as to why Depp is wearing this particular piece of jewelry. If there’s some deep, profound connection he feels toward Che Guevara, or if he just thinks the necklace is a really snazzy looking accessory, I don’t know (your guess is just as good as mine). However, I do know that you can catch Johnny Depp’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas costar, Benicio del Toro, giving a fantastic portrayal of Mr. Guevara in the very good 2008 film, Che, which was all about the man’s life.

Regardless of your personal feelings about Che Guevara, there’s no denying his lasting popularity in our culture. You can find his image not only on shirts and dog tags, but on items of all types throughout the years. This is good news for those of you wanting to snag Depp’s style, as you can get your hands on your own Che Guevara dog tag with one quick Google search.

Lord Ganesh Necklace

In the Hindu pantheon, Lord Ganesh is one of the most worshipped deities around. The appearance of Lord Ganesh includes having the head of an elephant, four arms (not to be confused with forearms, but those are doubled as well), and a chubby little gut that’s apparently the norm for Indian gods (you’d think that would be more of an American tradition). The necklace that Johnny Depp wears of Lord Ganesh (sorry about the blurry image) is a silver representation of the deity which Depp keeps dangling from his neck with a black leather cord.

As usual, I don’t know why Johnny Depp is wearing this particular piece of theistic jewelry. From particular interviews (see my Celebrity Atheists and Skeptics List by clicking here), his apparent acquaintanceships with well-known, outspoken atheists such as Michael Shermer and Lawrence Krauss, and even a photo of Depp wearing a “Skeptic” Penn (along with the Michael Shermer book, The Moral Arc), it seems that Depp himself is more than likely either an atheist or an agnostic, as far as his religious beliefs go. So whatever his reasons are for wearing this particular necklace, it isn’t likely that it’s meant to be a representation of Mr. Depp’s spiritual beliefs (although, if he were to believe in a god, one as kooky as Lord Ganesh would seem appropriate for him).

With that being said, Ganesh is symbolized as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences and the deva (“God” in Hindu) of intellect and wisdom. Overlooking the supernatural legends of Lord Ganesh, these latter attributes appear to be more along Johnny Depp’s style. Thus my best assumption is that this necklace is meant to show more of a symbolic reverence for what Lord Ganesh stands for rather than an actual belief in Ganesh has a real figure or deity.

The Bracelets

Brown Leather Wristband

While Johnny Depp is seen wearing a tremendous array of bracelets, one of the ones you almost always see him in is a brown, leather wristband, which he usually wears on his right wrist (typically accompanied by several other bracelets on the same wrist). Oftentimes you can even see him sporting this manly piece of attire in his films as well, such as in his role of Raul Duke in the cult classic Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (to see how to dress like Johnny Depp’s character in that film, and get a gander at the wristband worn there, click here). Incidentally, in that film he portrays the late, great notorious author and journalist (and one of Johnny Depp’s personal compadres in real life) Hunter S. Thompson; Thompson, as well, is often seen wearing a very similar looking wristband. Speaking of which, later, in 2011 (after Thompsons 2005 suicide), Depp portrayed famous writer yet again in the not-quite-as-spectacular film, The Rum Diary (based on the Thompson novel of the same name). Although, I can’t recall a wristband being worn in that one, so I’m not really sure why I’m talking about it. Nevermind. Anyway…

Looking through various photos of Johnny Depp, it seems that he doesn’t wear merely one of these wristbands, but, rather, he seems to have an entire collection of them. If you’d like to replicate the style of the one photographed above, you can find many that are similar on Amazon, Ebay, and, well, basically all over the freakin’ place (anywhere that bracelets are sold, at least). They’re not at all difficult to come by and they’re available in a large variety of shapes, designs, fabrics, colors, and (most importantly) prices. Below, I’ve linked to one that I thought was particularly nice, was of a modest, inexpensive price, and that was fairly similar to the wristband pictured on Johnny Depp in the picture above.

In the age of newfangled gadgets like smart phones and Apple watches, when each of the various devices in your home has a digital clock located somewhere on it, there’s really little practical need for a good old fashion wristwatch in these modern times.

With all that being said, there’s a certain undeniable degree of class, style, and masculinity that comes with wearing a wristwatch. I don’t know, there’s just something so grownup seeming about wearing an ordinary old watch with gears, roman numerals, hands, and all that jazz. I don’t know if I’d go as far as to considered it a “vintage look” (surely they’re not that out of fashion), but there’s definitely a vintage-esque quality about it.

With old-time hats, tribal-looking jewelry, and tattoos up the wazoo, Depp’s looks are far from what you’d call “modern”, so having a wristwatch seems very fitting (does he really seem the type to be constantly whipping his iPhone out, like a teenage girl, every time he wants to check and see what time it is? Nah). In fact, in nearly every photograph you find of Mr. Depp he’s almost always wearing a wristwatch of some sort.

Unfortunately, he doesn’t appear to go cheap with his watches (sorry, no Casio’s here). Most, including the one pictured in the photograph here, appear to be either rare finds or custom made, making them very difficult to find replicas of (trust me, I nearly broke a sweat while searching them out).

If anyone happens to come across any watches with a specific match to the one Depp is seen wearing in this photograph, or any others, feel free to drop a link into the comments section at the bottom of this screen. I’ll get to adding it on our list directly after.

In the meantime, here’s another looking cool watch to hold you over.

Here’s a simple addition to your Depp-like ensemble that shouldn’t require too much thought or effort (and, more importantly, too much money). It’s nothing more than a simple beaded bracelet (or two, or three beaded bracelets) that you can wear on either wrist.

Depp is a man of many beads; there is no one particular set that stands out from his various outfits. However, on one wrist he wears a beaded bracelet that’s been said to have been beaded by his daughter, Lily Rose. In general, though, Depp is often wearing other beaded bracelets on different occasions. This usually adds to the tribal look that he’s so often seen sporting — a look regularly emphasized by Johnny Depp’s tattoos, necklaces, long hair, deep tan, and his genetically inherited Cherokee bone structure (which the heavens have unfairly blessed him with in what appears to be an evil plan to make the rest of us despise ourselves over the measly little cheekbones that nature has been so cruel as to shackle us with).

You have two choices when thinking about acquiring your own beaded bracelets. You can either make your own, using simple string and beads (both of which are available online and at local stores for extremely cheap prices, with beads that are available in numerous shapes, colors and styles); or you can buy pre-made beaded bracelets from pretty much anywhere online or at your local stores (these also come in a large variety of shapes, colors and styles and are available at extremely low prices).

Personally, I’d go the rout of making my own bracelet, as it lends a bit more meaning to the jewelry as oppose to one randomly picked up at a store. But if you’d rather save yourself the trouble and purchase one that’s pre-made, that’s cool too. Below is a good starting point.

Here’s a quick, easy, and surprisingly fashionable way to get you some swanky looking wrist gear without actually having to purchase an expensive bracelet or wristband. In fact, as long as you have a bandana (and an arm) you should be all set to go; no more expenses necessary.

A bandana is like the rebels version of the classic handkerchief. You usually see them (at least on movies and TV) being worn by — or at least carried by — the likes of stereotypical tough guys as bikers and cowboys, but in real life anyone can have one. Johnny Depp, for instance, is often see with one either dangling from his back or front pocket (adding a nice splash of color to his outfit) or with one wrapped loosely around his wrist in the fashion of a wristband. The latter is obviously what we’re focused on here (see the corresponding photo to get an idea of how Depp sometimes wears a bandana on his wrist).

You can usually get bandanas in packs of about three or four, ranging from various different colors, patterns, and styles. Aside from the obvious style they lend to your ensemble, however, it should be noted that bandanas also have a multitude of other uses. From wiping off sweat on a hot day, to blowing your nose (if needed), and cleaning up after unexpected messes, they’re generally a good thing to have around. Just like a knife and a lighter, a small piece of cloth is just something small and easy to carry that can become surprisingly useful in the event of emergencies. In actuality, its use as a fashion accessory is merely secondary to those more practical uses.

With that being said, if you’re reading an article having to do with dressing like Johnny Depp, style is probably of some importance to you. So to help you out, here’s a few bandanas to choose from.

The Rings

Johnny Depp can be spotted wearing many different types of rings on many different types of occasions. But it’s these unique pair of skull rings, in particular, that I chose to talk about here as they appeared to best fit in with Depp’s apparent style. Also, they look awesome.

Other than looking really cool, however, these unique rings also have a back story. Johnny Depp began wearing them during the time he was acting in the fantastic, extremely underrated Jim Jarmusch movie, Dead Man (1995). Jarmusch (who also directed the equally underrated films, Coffee & Cigarettes, from 2003, Broken Flowers, from 2005, Night on Earth, from 1991, and Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, from 1999), Johnny Depp, and Depp’s friend, co-star, and all around badass, Iggy Pop (who plays only a minor role in the film) all wear the rings. I’m unsure as to where the rings came from or whose idea it was to wear them, but they were meant to be a symbolization of how our existence in this world is only temporary and how we should be reminded to live every moment in our lives to its absolute fullest (very reminiscent of the film Dead Man itself, which probably isn’t coincidence — human skulls after all, are dead men at least half the time).

Obviously, I couldn’t find any exact replicas of these one of a kind rings (well, I’m assuming they’re one of a kind, at least, if anyone knows otherwise, please let me know in the comments below), but there are many other styles of skull rings available online. Below is an example which I found and enjoyed but if they’re not to your liking, there are many more choices available to you the the utilization of just a quick search on google.
