Red Hair and Redheads

Why Red Hair Rocks

Redheads, natural or not, are seemingly underrated. Brunettes have great hair, but unless it's some overrated sex symbol like Megan Fox or Kim Kardashian (who are mostly famous for their looks, not much else), brunettes don't get much attention for their hair. And blondes, eh, I find them overrated. Really, what is so much more special about blonde hair than any other color? I'll admit that it looks good on some people, but not everyone. Yet it seems that more and more people-- especially women-- are dying their hair blonde. Therefore, blonde is becoming an anonymous hair color.

But red hair? Not only is it vibrant and eye-catching, but it can turn heads all by itself. You can have red hair and be dressed rather casually, and still receive stares. Good stares if you have the right shade of red and right hairstyle for you, bad stares if the red is too bright or has too many highlights. Or maybe it's the right shade of red hair, but it's styled badly.

Yep, if you want red hair, finding the right shade of red along with the right hairstyle can be tricky. But hopefully this lens can help out with that. This lens, if not now then later on, will touch on every kind of red hair imaginable. Plenty of pictures will be included as well, so you can see what shades of red and what hairstyles you like best. This lens will also include sources/links to other web sites where you can find and buy red hair color, wigs, extensions, and special shampoos and conditoners to help red hair last longer. Scroll down and read on to begin!

Red Hair Wigs

If you want to find out what shade of red works best before you dye your hair, or if you simply want red hair without any commitment, wigs are a good way to go. You can get them in different shades of red as well as different styles and lengths. You can do a Google search or search Amazon and/or eBay for a few red wigs you might want to try out.

Red Hair Extensions

Perhaps you are ready to dye your hair red, but you have short or thin hair, and you want long, voluminous red hair. Buying hair extensions can help with this, because you won't have to wait to grow your hair out. If you have your hair dyed professionally, you have 2 options.

First, you can bring a package of hair extensions with you to show them exactly what color to dye your hair. They can put the extensions in some time after that (probably not the same day, since your dyed hair and scalp might need a break before putting the hair extensions in).

Or, you can tell them what color you want your hair, and they might used hair extensions that are NOT red and dye them to match your hair.

Hair extensions can be done several different ways. Here are a few of them:

  • Clip-on hair extensions can be clipped and pinned in with your hair, and then brushed or combed to blend in with your own hair. This is probably the easiest way to get extensions done.
  • Weaving/Sewn-in hair extensions, where your hair is braided a certain way, and then the hair extensions are sewn in along the braids.
  • Braided-in hair extensions, where the extensions are just braided in with your own hair. This is usually only done when you're going to have all your hair braided up or have dreadlocks.
  • Bonding/Glued-in extensions. To my knowledge, there are different types of glues that can be used. But the best kind of glue to use for this process is protein glue. I had extensions done this past summer with protein glue, which my hairdresser told me is best for the hair since hair is made up of protein as well, which makes the glue more gentle on your hair than other glues.

Here is a very good link/website with more information about hair extensions:

  • HairResources.net (first of 6 steps/pages on the research and process to be aware of when getting hair extensions; also describes 7 ways to get hair extensions done [which include the four ways I described above])

Red Hair Dye

In this case I would say just get your first dye job done professionally. However, you can do it yourself (and it will be less expensive), but you need to have some idea of what you're doing.

I have never tried to dye my hair, so I can't give any tips from my own experience. But I can give a few tips based on other people's experiences. If you're going to dye your hair, it's best to talk to someone else who has dyed their own hair before. They can tell you what they did right, as well as what they did wrong. Also, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS on the box or container. You are less likely to mess it up if you do what the instructions tell you to do.

Here are some links to websites and web pages with more tips about how to dye your hair and how to touch it up:

  • GlamBlush (link takes you directly to page about touching up a red hair dye job)
  • SoYouWanna.com (first of five pages giving extensive tips about whether you should dye your hair or not, as well as how to dye it)

Here is another place you can find red hair dye (aside from Amazon & eBay):

Red Hair Wigs, Hair Extensions & Dyes on Amazon

I can't link directly to this Amazon list since HubPages only allows 2 links per domain. and I have two other Amazon lists I'll be linking to later on. However, I am going to list the HTML for the list's URL so that you can copy & paste it into your web browser bar and view the wigs, extensions and dyes that I've placed on the list.

Red Hair Dye YouTube Tutorials: Dying Dark Brown Hair Red & How To Touch It Up & Maintain It - These are NOT professionals, but they DO know what they're doing.

For anyone trying to go from dark brown to red- these videos are for you. This doesn't mean you don't still need to do more research about how to do it (especially if you want a different shade of red than she has), but these videos should help immensely.

YouTube Playlist - Red Hair Dye Tutorials: Dying Dark Brown Hair Red

The first 2 videos are from a girl named Nicole. The first video focuses on dyeing your hair red without pre-bleaching it. (This does not mean you don't have to bleach your hair AT ALL to get it red, it just means that you can bleach it at the same time as you dye it, basically. One less step, saving you a bit of time.) Her second video focuses on touch ups & maintenance, since red hair is notoriously difficult to keep up.

The other 5 videos-- made over a stretch of 2 years-- are from a lovely Australian girl named Louna. (Something to keep in mind when she's discussing certain products, as some are only available in Australia, so you'll have to find something similar in your own country).

The first Louna video features her bleaching her roots and re-dyeing her whole head. She explains each step as she goes through the process.

The second Louna video (which is shorter but still as detailed) is basically the same process, but with one major difference--she does not pre-bleach her hair. She uses a new product called MajiContrast, allowing her to bleach and dye at the same time.

The third Louna video is similar to the second, but she again uses a different product-- Hi-Lift Affinage B Red (now caled Affinage Infinity).

The fourth Louna video is not a tutorial, but a short review of how well the color holds in her hair (on the hair she didn't pre-bleach), even after a few days on vacation at the beach.

The fifth and final video features Louna discussing how to maintain red hair and what products she uses to do that. (She also mentions the Affinage product name change for anyone who wants to use that exact product-- so you know what it is and where to find it.)

I would suggest saving these videos (favorite them or add them to your own YouTube playlist, etc) as well as checking out some of the YouTube commentary on them, as some of the comments feature more tips as well.

Shampoos & Conditioners Made Especially For Red Hair - Amazon List

I failed to mention this earlier on this webpage, so I'll mention it here. In order to keep your color from fading, or to enhance your red hair, you should use shampoos AND conditioners made especially for dyed red hair. The products listed in this link do just that. (I've posted some of those same products below as well.)

List of Shampoos & Conditioners for Red Hair

Hair Bleaching Kits, Products & Hair Color Remover; Hair Toning Products; Protein Shampoos, Conditioners, Serums, Protein Filler

I've opted to simply list a few of the best hair care products below, but I wanted to give a brief explanation of what certain products will do for your hair (for those of you that aren't as familiar with these hair care products).

List of Hair Bleaching Kits, Products & Hair Color Remover; Hair Toning Products; Protein Shampoos, Conditioners, Serums and Protein Fillers

And now for a brief description of the hair products on this list...

Hair Bleaching Kits, Products & Hair Color Remover on Amazon:

There are some hair bleaching products you can use, along with a hair color remover kit if you don't like the way the dye job comes out...

Hair Toner Products on Amazon:

If you bleach your hair but it comes out with brassy tones (yellows & oranges) in it, these products are supposed to help get rid of the brassiness. But read the directions for how to correctly use your chosen product in order to get your desired results. And definitely read the reviews for these products.

Protein Shampoos, Conditioners, Serums and Protein Fillers on Amazon:

The protein fillers are to be used a good 30-60 minutes before you apply your color. It restores protein in damaged hair & allows the color to stick better. Also, using protein shampoos and conditioners will keep your hair healthy. But READ THE DIRECTIONS.

Red Hair CAN Work on ALL Ethnicities/Nationalities

Let me begin by saying that I am actually black, and I have owned several red wigs over the past three years, all of which looked great on me. But when I got my first red wig, I had help picking it out because I really didn't know what shade of red would look best on me, especially with my dark skin. And so, with my red hair experience, and after paying much attention to redheads of many different ethnic groups & nationalities, I can impart this wisdom to you.

If you're black or asian, or anything other than white, and you think that you can't pull off red hair because of that... well, you're wrong. That's not to say that you can definitely go red, because some people just can't pull it off. But that is more about skin tone than skin color. If your skin has a red or pink undertone, you can probably pull off red hair, regardless of whether you're black, white, asian, hispanic, etc. The shade of red you can pull off, however, is reliant on how dark or light your skin is, as you'll see here. Likewise, if your skin with a yellow undertone, then you're most likely better off brunette or blonde.

And so, I'm linking to two great examples of red hair on black women. The first is a photo of a model with dark skin, and long, dark, brownish-red hair (here). The second is a photo of a rapper (whom you may or may not be familiar with) named Charli Baltimore (here). She is black as well, but with lighter skin. And therefore, she can get away with the bright red hair. She could also go darker if she wanted to. But the darker a person's skin is, the darker red they'll need to go, otherwise they won't look good. (Really, imagine the model above with hair as bright as Charli's. Not so good, is it?) My skin is even a little darker than that model's, so I have to go even darker than that when I do it (which is the reason I favor darker colors on myself, like the style & dye job I pointed out in the "My Favorite Red Hairstyle & Dye Job" module below).

Famous Faker Redheads

Note: Pictures are subject to change or be removed entirely...

There are plenty of famous celebs who have dyed their otherwise blonde or brunette hair red for a TV, movie or theatre role, or simply because they wanted to. Some of these celebs the general public is so used to seeing with red hair, it's simply assumed that they're natural redheads when they actually aren't. So I have actually looked up some of these celebs using SEVERAL sources, confirming that the following are "faker redheads" (& note that for now, there is only one guy on the list because men don't normally dye their hair red unless they've dyed it red by accident, or they're part of the punk scene, or they're Dennis Rodman):

Famous Redheads Whose Natural Hair Color Is Debatable

These people... well, there's just no solid evidence that they are or aren't natural redheads, and I couldn't find any quotes from any of them about it, either. But again, because the general public is so used to seeing these with red hair, it's assumed that they're redheads. So who knows...but if you happen upon a website that can confirm what the following celebs natural hair color is, or better yet, a direct quote from the celeb themselves, then I can move them to one of the two categories above. For now, they stay here.

Believe it or not, actress Molly Ringwald (some have said she's not a natural redhead, and yet I can't find a reliable source that confirms this).

Other debatable redheads: Country singer Wynonna Judd (yes, I know she's known for her flaming red hair, but I couldn't confirm that it was naturally hers), actress Cate Blanchett (had red hair for a few movies, including 2008's The Case of Benjamin Button, and is rumored by some to be a natural redhead, but looks convincing as a blonde, so... you tell me), singer Geri Haliwell (formerly Ginger Spice of the Spice Girls; same hair color issue as Laura Prepon has), Actress Marcia Cross (of Desperate Housewives; was also on the original Melrose Place; I originally thought she was a natural redhead, but someone who viewed this page said otherwise, and I see the same debate when I google "Marcia Cross natural redhead" or "Marcia Cross natural hair color"); and Laura Prepon (star of That 70's Show, October Road and Orange Is The New Black. All the sources I looked up for her all say different things, claiming she's a natural redhead, or a natural blonde, or a natural brunette; no one knows for sure).

I was a redhead for quite a while, it was my addiction :) My hairdresser said that once you go red there is no turning back haha and that some women just need this color - either by having red hair or by having red shoes. I thought it was weird, but then again now that I am a natural brunette I can't part with my red shoes haha. I have a feeling I will be a read head soon again though, the color is empowering.

@Rosaquid: Welcome! Yes, red is one of those colors... when I got my first red wig (everyone thought I dyed it, I didn't), I did notice I got a bit more attention in general, not just the usual attention from guys. There's just something about red hair...

@INeedGlasses: Disney? I wouldn't give them that much credit to be honest. But yes, The Little Mermaid was a big deal back in the day. But I'm sure people were dying their hair red before that movie. Just not as many as there are now...

Cherry-Ambition (author) from U.S. on February 27, 2011:

@writercb1: I didn't miss Lily Cole, I just didn't put up a picture of her! She's mentioned in that last paragraph of the 2nd "Famous Natural Redheads" module.

As for Bartek...erm, gonna have to look him up. We'll see if he's as cute as Scott Grimes or Conan O'Brien (WITH his beard), lol.

writercb1 from United States on February 27, 2011:

I LOVE RED HAIR. I do not have, but it always catches my eye. It is sexy, it is bright and happy, it is passionate, it is rare...I cannot understand why people do not like red hair. Perhaps it frightens them. Perhaps they are envious. I do not know. All I know is that I love red hair. Alas, it seems there aren't a lot of natural redheaded men with good looks; but there a lot of women with natural red hair who are good-looking. I am more a fan of natural red, because it is more vibrant; the color is just gorgeous. I can't resist it. But, I think some dyed reds are good, and I myself have flirted with having red hair. It was fun while it lasted! I may go red again. I am a blonde naturally. But red hair continues to fascinate me.

One sexy redhead you missed is the girl who was in "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus", alongside Heath Ledger. She used to be on Playboy; she is very hot. Lily Cole. Natural redhead.

One good-looking male redhead I've found is Bartek. He is a male model. Google him and you will find pictures.

Wow I sound so perverted. Sorry. Redheads do that to me sometimes!

anonymous on January 22, 2011:

I love redheads. Isla Fisher in particular!

TopMovieDvds on January 21, 2011:

Loved Khloe Kardashian in her one week as a redhead. I lensrolled to my Robert Pattinson Hair lens -- he was also spotted as a redhead. Rupert Grint from Harry Potter. Also the red wigs in Scott Pilgrim.

C A Chancellor from US/TN on January 19, 2011:

Nice lens! FYI, the Jennifer Garner / Alias look is a wig. I remember seeing an interview (part of the DVD extras, I think) where she was talking about all the different wigs they put her in on the show, and how that one was most associated with her character, even though she only wore it once.

livingfrontiers on January 14, 2011:

Great lens, in how you show the people and the time of era. Great information on products too.

AWildDog on January 12, 2011:

@Cherry-Ambition: Well yes I kind of meant dyed it red lol. Tho a wig is probably better, reds fade really fast.

Cherry-Ambition (author) from U.S. on January 12, 2011:

@AWildDog: You missed the part of the lens where I discussed wearing red wigs. :) I've never dyed my hair red, no, but I do STILL wear red wigs. I have been for 4 years...oh no, wait, going on 5 years now...

AWildDog on January 12, 2011:

I was just looking through your lenses hun, have you ever actually had red hair?

javr from British Columbia, Canada on January 05, 2011:

That's quite a lineup of impressive redheads! This lens has been blessed by a Squid Angel.

sorana lm on December 28, 2010:

Very interesting. I think the redheads look gorgeous. But again, there are gorgeous blondes and gorgeous brunnettes too.

GrowWear on November 28, 2010:

Had a childhood friend complete with red hair and freckles. She was very beautiful.

CafeLove on November 24, 2010:

Hi there! You left a comment on one of my lenses in July and said to let you know when I update it... Well, I finally did. =) It's my Breast Cancer T-shirt lens.

Love the lens here! There are a lot of red heads in my family.

LadyJasmine LM on November 21, 2010:

Ahhh, red hair. It's taken me years to find the perfect formulas for my own hair. I always feel more vibrant when my hair is fire engine red! :-) Great page!

My fiancé has red in his beard... hopefully my kids will pop out with red hair!

theconditionpod on October 27, 2010:

Go Conan O'Brien, world's funniest redhead

Ronald Tucker from Louisville, Kentucky on October 21, 2010:

R&/Hip-HOP recording artist Rihanna looked stunning wearing her hair red, I dn't know if it was her own hair dyed or a wig but she looked gorgeous. Also, Jaime Faith Edmondson, Playboy Playmate(Miss January 2010) is a natural redhead and the first Playmate of the Decade. If she is selected Playmate of the Year it will be the first time a redhead has been selected in over 30 years!

Sojourn on October 20, 2010:

Really nice lens! Every now and then I dye my brown hair red just so I'll look more like I could really be the mother of my youngest son. We have no idea where his really red hair came from. :)

tandemonimom lm on October 20, 2010:

Great lens, I RED it all! ;-) Lensrolled to T-shirts and Gifts for Redheads!

anonymous on October 18, 2010:

My family, including myself, is full of naturally vibrant redheads and we wear our bright red curls proudly. It's true people do look and sometimes very rudely stare but we figure they're the odd ones, not us!

Great lens!

Rita-K on October 17, 2010:

The new red hair colors are so natural it is hard to tell real redheads from their bottle counterparts. I believe live for the day...try every color!

Deb Kingsbury from Flagstaff, Arizona on October 15, 2010:

It would be fun to try out red hair. Hmm.....

Nancy Tate Hellams from Pendleton, SC on October 13, 2010:

My mom was a redhead and our daughter is one, too so we think highly of redheads around here. Very well done and I enjoyed my visit.

Missmerfaery444 on September 19, 2010:

OK you have made me want to go get my hair dyed red and black again :) Fab lens!

PuddinTane LM on September 08, 2010:

they say blondes have more fun, but hey red heads are sexier me thinks, nice lens :)

Isabel2012 on May 29, 2010:

For a time I went red with super light blond highlights. I loved that because my hair looked like fire. I love changing my Hair color it makes me feel like a different person. Great lens and options!

anonymous on May 08, 2010:

I personally don't agree that the darker your skin the darker the red should be. I dyed my hair a very bright red last year (my skin is almost dark chocolate) and I received so many compliments. One of my friends (who is way darker) asked me to dye her hair the same colour and she turned out amazing.

luxuryparlor on May 04, 2010:

@hayleylou lm: hair coloring is beautiful however it can damage hair if not taken care of.

Just For Redheads is a fabulous cosmetic site.

sheriangell on March 19, 2010:

I am blonde and probably will always be, (except for all the nasty gray I battle these days) but red hair absolutely fascinates me. It is truly the most beautiful hair color. You pay great tribute to red hair, well done!

Canela Ajena from Houston on February 13, 2010:

I tried red hair once and I received a lot of compliments.

Patricia on February 04, 2010:

I was born with red hair myself and wish I wasn't. Nice lens on red hair. Blessed by an angel!

jgelien on January 02, 2010:

My youngest daughter was born with the most beautiful shade of red hair imaginable and the under layer at the nape of her neck is golden. So what does she do? She dyes it a dark purpley reddish color! I love your lens. 5*

KimGiancaterino on December 31, 2009:

hayleylou lm on December 08, 2009:

Cherry-Ambition (author) from U.S. on December 07, 2009:

@wilddove6: Awww.. I'm sorry to hear about the hair dye allergy. You could always do the extensions or a wig!

I have a lot of allergies, do I'm going to have to keep the hair dye in mind.

Webcodes LM on December 07, 2009:

Great lens on redheads with great pictures. 5 super stars!

wilddove6 on December 07, 2009:

Well, as an ex-hairdresser of the 80's, I dabbled in all kinds of colours, (we won't mention the crayon purple!), but I think red was always my favourite. I also thought it warmed up my rather sallow skin tone.

If I didn't develop an allergy to hair dye, I'd definitely go back to being a red-head.

So much zing :)

Wing high five and nice job on the lens!
