What's The Purpose of Beauty Pageants?

Celebrating humanity’s beauty is an ostensible answer, but a beauty pageant is supplementary rather necessary in celebrating humanity’s beauty. The phrase beauty pageant tends to be associated with women possessing features that most consider desirable, but what is the purpose of beauty pageants?

Anything less than a lofty reason for the purpose of beauty pageants, classify them as expandable entertainment, a triviality promoting the worship and or objectification of its contestants. What is the purpose of judging and selecting the most beautiful person amongst many beautiful persons? The participants may understand the purpose of a beauty pageant in their competitive run toward the finish line to claim the title of being considered the most beautiful amongst many beauties.

Contestants enter beauty pageants with the understanding they are beautiful enough to compete. Perhaps participating in beauty pageants is an effort for them to confirm their own beauty, and being legitimized by a judge secures their status as beautiful. Recognition beyond the self-assessment granting the understanding for contestants to claim eligibility to compete as beautiful, especially by judges appraising each contestant, may convince them, they are objectively beautiful, i.e, their beauty is factual.

Surely beauty pageants must have more of a significant purpose beyond serving as a medium for beautiful people to establish their beauty as a fact. Yes they can have a purpose beyond this. Beauty pageants have been effective as fund raisers. Some pageants function to raise money for cancer. The Miss World Pageant has been recognized for raising funds to help handicapped and underprivileged children.

Miss America is perhaps the most recognized beauty pageant, generating millions from sponsors, and awarded scholarships totaling $340,000 thousand on the national level.“ Last year, the Miss America Organization and its state and local organizations made available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance.”

Beauty pageants can have a purpose beyond showcasing beautiful people, and the question is applicable to football, baseball, basketball, and race-car driving, etc… The primary purpose seems to be entertainment, and of course to make money.

Nice style, a sensible and careful analysis. I agree that pageants when done for positive goals like fund-raising, creating awareness of a problem, etc, can be very productive to society. It is when there is no goal beyond entertainment that they are not so helpful or productive. I have to say I really like your carefully thought out writing.
