Many women now profess a sincere hatred for pantyhose. They have been forced, due to dress codes, to wear for years. So why on Earth would a guy ever want to wear something that a lot of women consider restrictive, hot, itchy and generally uncomfortable garment that has even been equated with medieval torture devices?

Many guys simply feel more comfortable wearing pantyhose or tights. They usually wear them as a one piece replacement for socks and underwear. If pantyhose are sized properly there is nothing for men to find uncomfortable in them. Since the development of Comfilon and many other new men's tights or pantyhose brands men now have a variety of styles to choose from. These male focused brands are sized and proportioned for men. Some of these male styles even have a fly opening for convenience of those who prefer a fly.

Some men like to wear hose simply because like the way pantyhose look under close fittings trousers. Since they are a one piece garment there is no visible underwear or sock lines. I like the support in the groin area as much as the support in the legs. Most traditional men's underwear has little to no support in this area. Boxers are fine, as long as I have a pair of tights on underneath.

Athletes have found that wearing compression leg wear helps them with their performance. Athletes from every sport including running, swimming, cycling, football, baseball, basketball, gymnastics, hikers, mountain climbers, aerobics and dance have all discovered the benefits of compression leg wear. If your sport involves leg muscles then performance will be increased using compression.

Just as many men as women suffer from circulatory issues or tired heavy or aching legs and turn to support wear to help with these issues. Men may try support socks at the suggestion of their doctors. Doctors will often prescribe compression stockings for a variety of medical conditions. Some opt for knee high or thigh high but a lot of them just feel that the waist high is easier or more comfortable. I tried some knee length men’s support socks to help with tired heavy feeling legs, but like many others found that I did not like the tight band at the top of my calf. So I switched to waist length hosiery. I can get relief from support pantyhose without going to a medical grade product. I will start posting reviews of the many that I have tried and will continue to try.

Wearing pantyhose or tights as a base layer for activity in cold or hot environments or any activity where you sweat also will benefit the wearer through perspiration removal. Wear beneath cotton or wool and the perspiration will wick, passing through the nylon weave to be absorbed by the top layer leaving you drier and more comfortable. There are many other commercial undergarments made for this purpose. These other garments usually cost between 40 and 75 dollars. The most I have ever paid for tights or hose was less than 30, usually much less.

So how do most guys end up trying pantyhose for the first time? Pre-teen or adolescent young men try on their mom's or sister's pantyhose out of curiosity. Some older guys innocently dressed up as a member of the opposite sex for Halloween or during role playing with friends or lovers. Many as little boys were dressed up by their older sisters for fun. Some of us, me included, were dressed in tights as young boys as was common practice in many communities and had no desire to stop. Bicyclist and runners may try on a pair to keep warm and remain aerodynamic when they train in cooler climates. Hunters and outdoorsmen for years have been stealing their wives or girlfriends pantyhose to keep warm.

However they first tried on a pair, once they pulled them on they had no desire to take them off. The more they wore them, the more they realized how good they felt.

Here is a news flash for you if you are not aware; most of the men that wear pantyhose or tights on a regular or even daily basis are straight. Many of them are conservative even Republican men wear pantyhose. Religion is no barrier for most men to wear either. There is a discussion going on at one blog about what the bible says about men wearing tights. Most of us have simply found that they are a comfortable, practical and helpful garment that just feels nice to have on.

If a guy wore knee highs under his socks and pants for more warmth is anything wrong with that? I just got 2 pair of men's nylon socks from Amazon 12 $ high quality knee highs I guess. Yet a 10 pack of women's knee highs is is 6 $ at Walgreens?? Men's pantyhose are 16 $ and no free shipping...You ladies have it so easy, and comfortable. I wish certain clothing was not attached to just one sex.

I was searching for less expensive pantyhose online men's and women's and there was a comment made. Crossdresser...if you wear pantyhose now and then, or maybe women's underwear are you a crossdresser ? I don't think so .I don't want to look like a lady period! I wish that hose for men was bigger here in America .It is actually more practical for outdoor jobs and hobbies .Hunting for instance .I plan on wearing pantyhose to the gun range so when the wind comes I will be comfortable! Crossdresser my A@#

Clive Cussler on September 28, 2020:

I picked up a two pack of pantyhose today. Showered and put a pair on. It has been years .I had to remember what they were like so I can stop thinking about them .I may get some male stuff and tell the wife what I am considering. BUT not these Hanes pantyhose I just picked up. It is not the same as panties, trust me.

Clive Cussler on September 14, 2020:

So what is the difference between wanting to wear pantyhose for men.pantyhose for women, unisex pantyhose and as Amazon lists a few as pantyhose for men and women. It is almost always a photo of a woman in the hose? I may buy some hose this winter, should I hide them from my wife?Should I say these are men's,these are unisex? Is it worth the trouble?I can tell you it is not the same thing as wanting to wear women's panties.Believe me I should know.I could order on Amazon and make sure she doesn't see...Or go to a drug store and just buy a pair quietly and try some..?Pantyhose in America for men will not be normalized quick enough for us...sigh.

I posted earlier today about this subject. I pitched my old cotton long johns in exchange for men's nylon footless. They feel like hose, I wore pantyhose in winter many years ago.Thought about it ever since.Being that I am a recovering panty addict my feelings about male or female hose is skewed. It's practical, yet a turn on at the same time.I put these on last night after getting from Amazon.Do I like them? Uh huh.I guess I will fight the temptation to wear another women's garment,or give in to something close. How come women get all the fun clothing? LOL.

Johnh0121 on August 26, 2019:

Men like the feeling and snug fit, men tend to shave their whole leg no hair so the pantyhose are tight to the skin whereas women only shave from knee down this is why women complain that the pantyhose sag and pull. If women shaved their whole leg like men do they wouldn't sag or bunch up. The other issue women have is they are trying to put 10 lbs of potatoes into a 5 pound bag wear the right size a size D trying to fit into a size B doesn't work. So bottom is if women want to feel comfortable in pantyhose shave your whole leg to the top and buy the correct size. This is why men don't have that issue the have to shave their legs as the hair in between the hose and the skin act as a slide for the pantyhose. Why do you think beautiful long legs women wear pantyhose and shave their whole leg and have no problems and love wearing Pantyhose or stockings

Growing up with several sisters in the early 70's, pantyhose were everywhere in our house. The bathroom where they would wash and hang them to dry and also their rooms usually had some thrown on the floor. After slipping on a pair one day just being curious I was hooked. The sensual feeling that I felt was overwhelming. To this day I still wear mostly in private.

FrankM4440 on August 14, 2017:

My wife and I just moved from our small town to a major city. I love wearing pantyhose but having big feet that started having rough dry skin and thick toenails I was shredding pantyhose. My wife bought me some flesh colored footless tights from Walmart called Secret Treasure. Soft and strong. They look like medical grade compression leg wear. When I'm on my days off, I'm wearing these with cargo shorts, ankle socks, shoes, and polo or tshirt. No comments but some people look and go on their way. And if anyone ask why I wear them, I tell them for leg health cause I do. And my wife likes the feeling them better than pantyhose when we cuddle

Mike on August 13, 2017:

As a reply to Frank M4449 , I too about 2 years ago started to wear them in public with shorts. I was at the time a business owner on my feet 12-14 hours a day. I never looked back. I wear them every day for the reasons of support, the feel and because they just look much better than a hairy bare leg. In the past 2 years not one person has said a word to me and I don't shy away from going anywhere in them. My wife knew I was a shall we say closet case wearer for most of our 25 years together. Now after 2 years of openly wearing them she encourages me however she still worries that if I wear them I may be ridiculed. Me now I just don't care. Men that worry about it might give it a try. The more that do will bring down the walls of shame and some day it might just be common place for us all.

Kim on July 02, 2017:

Because of my long term CVI, I treat my condition with three different levels of compression on various days from 8-15 mmHg, to 15-20 mmHg to 20-30 mmHg; depending on my pain level, my swelling and my planned activity. My doctors have told me to “stop” wearing the knee highs, and start wearing {or actually go back to} thigh high stockings, as I needed the higher support. Within days of following their advice I noticed a world of difference, and will not be having surgery {or at least for now}. BUT, I noticed that many times the thigh highs do not like to stay up, and under most conditions pantyhose stay in place much better. So I started wearing a combination of thigh highs and pantyhose, and the various compressions depending on various factors. And for comfort and effectiveness, I also use a combination of three different brands.

I have found Futuro Energizing Ultra Sheer Pantyhose 8-15 mmHg (Brief Cut) to be extremely comfortable when I need the light 8-15 weight support because they offer excellent support, while being much cooler than the unisex brands, because of being very sheer and having a feeling of hardly being on . They can also be worn with shorts without being noticed; which is a huge help as wearing any hose under jeans or pants is terribly hot. If men’s fashions would have kept up to women’s, these hose would have probably been perfect with a skirt.

When needing that next level of support, but also desiring the ability to venture out of jeans and pants into shorts; I have found TRUFORM Women’s LITES 15-20 mmHg Pantyhose to be extremely comfortable because they offer excellent support, while being slightly cooler because of being more sheer than some of the unisex brands, and because of the generous panty and wide waist band, providing more room and reducing any roll. They can be worn with shorts without being noticed, which is much cooler than the discomfort and heat of wearing any hose under jeans or pants.

I also wear Jobst Relief 15-20 mmHg Closed Toe Thigh Highs with Silicone Top Band at this level of comfort need; finding these extremely comfortable and reasonable in price. With the Silicone Top Band, they do stay up pretty well, especially when new; however, they do have a tendency to work their way down, and if you’re in an area that you can not pull them up, it can become very embarrassing and irritating; so depending on the circumstances, I may opt for one of my pantyhose instead.

I have found Jobst Relief 20-30 mmHg Closed Toe Pantyhose to be extremely comfortable when I need the extra support of the 20-30 mmHg weight hose because they offer excellent support, while being a very comfortable material, and very easy to get on.

I encourage everyone with leg and vein issues to purchase and wear support hose regularly; whether it be thigh high or pantyhose. And do NOT be ashamed of it, nor hide it. It is your health. They can prevent blood clots, serious vein problems, critical surgeries, so much leg and foot pain, and even death. They are articles of clothing, and nothing more; and they are made for men and women, and worn by men and women, even though they are mainly packaged for women. The days and years of them being sex items or symbols are long, long over. You have not seen girls or young ladies, or as far as that goes even middle aged ladies wearing pantyhose or stockings in years; unless it is for health reasons. I am willing to bet, today there are more men wearing stockings and pantyhose than women; they just don’t have the comfort of wearing them with the coolness of something like a skirt or dress. So go for your health and wear your hose openly and freely – stay alive and healthy.

Been a while from my last post. Been wearing shorts and hose out in public and no one has said a word. Been to large flea markets, movies, large malls, hardware stores. Not a word. Left my house to go to a men's Christian confrance in a polo shirt, Just My Size Run Restiant pantyhose ( nice compression, and they hold up well, it what I always wear out), shorts, and sandals. Made several stops, 1st at Kmart to buy more Curvation hose for sleeping in 2nd got a hair cut( the lady barber looked and smiled but not a word) 3rd a hobby shop for modeling supplies 4th a gas station to change into my suit( of corse I left my hose on underneath) a good day of fun. Next day after the confrance I stopped at a gas station for snacks and to change back into my driving clothes. Stopped at a CVS to see what hose they had and a stop at Home Depot for work supplies. Again nothing said to me. Start trying it guys, do wear out of town to start and go out at night in your town. My first time in my home town at night. I was in an outdoor play and my wife asked me to stop at the store to pick up some items. No body said a thing, but the woman in front of me in line kept checking out my legs and went outside. I paid for my items and went outside where she was waiting to ask me if I was wearing and why. I told her I was in a play outside and i wore all the time for leg pain. She smiled and said nice legs and left. A few weeks ago she came up to me and reminded me of our first meeting and asked if I was still wearing. I showed her my ankle under my pants. She smiles and said see you around.

I am a man who likes to wear hose anytime I can. So have found out that I can get mine from Brightlifedirect, where they sell low priced compression hose of nearly all types and sizes for men and women. I choose the women's thigh-high lace top light compression stockings. They wear just as good if not better than regular hose and I love the feminine lace stay-up tops. They also last longer than regular hose, if you don't put them in the dryer after hand washing them. I do need the compression hose, and have a great excuse to my wife for wearing lacey thigh top hose. She's not happy, but slightly agrees to me wearing them for support. Especially in the hot humid summers where wearing full pantyhose is way too hot.

Just wanted to pass on some information to hose lovers out there ;)

I wear compression pantyhose for tired legs and feet after a 10 to 12 hour day on them. I've tried several brands and No Nonsense size E is the best fit for me(6 ft, 255lbs. And size 15 feet) for the day time. At night I wear a brand called Curvation found at K Mart, size Curvatious 4. The hose massage my legs to help with Restless Leg Syndrome, but the control top isn't so tight and my member can grow straight out. They are very comfortable to sleep in.

I think pantyhose are great in the winter months as long as you get the right size. They are warm but not too warm and mostly comfortable, so they are great for those working outside or living in cold places. I have been wearing them for a long time and discovered that when people find out about me wearing them ( I"m male) most didn't think it was strange and if they laughed at first they quickly forgot about it and I continued to be warm. In fact i have found that a lot of men actually wear them for warmth (especially tights) they just don't advertise it. I was told this by my doctor as I was being seen last winter and was slightly embarrassed about wearing tights. So keep wearing them its good for you, better than getting sick

Count me as one of the male pantyhose-wearers and unabashedly so. I am so fortunate as my current spouse not only accepts wearing pantyhose, whether just around the house or for sex, but she also surprises me from time-to-time when she comers home with new pairs of pantyhose for me. It is an even bigger thrill when we purchse my pantyhose together.

I get a few confused looks when I walk into a club or party, but for the most part I get loads of compliments. People respect it when you blaze your own trail. Here are a few pics of how I do it:

I've worn stockings since I was 4 and pantyhose since 6. My mother noticed I really liked them and gave me her used pairs to play with and would buy new pairs for me occasionally.

I bought lots of my own pairs, I wear pantyhose out openly with shorts. I've met several girls who liked how my legs looked.

I'm somewhat surprised that many women don't like pantyhose. I love wearing them. They feel great. If they didn't I would have found that out a long time ago.

Maybe it's because I'm more selective in my pantyhose buying. I have some brands and styles I like and stick with them. When I do try something new, it's usually something that is a higher priced item than the cheapest stuff you might get a a pharmacy.

I think men wearing pantyhose or stockings is just very normal. Why? Because pantyhose or stockings for the first time (until right now) is made for men (now is unisex hosiery). So..wearing 'that' isn't something weird, wrong, etc, etc because its for you men. Dress, skirt, bra, high heels ,etc is made by men for women. But because women 'cross the line' wearing men's clothings know what it is. So..why men can't 'cross the line' wearing women's things. Hmm?! Thank's Hub.

Really like the closing paragraph of your article. I think it really sums up why I like wearing hose. "Here is a news flash ...; most of the men that wear pantyhose or tights ... are straight. Most of us have simply found that they are a comfortable, practical and helpful garment that just feels nice to have on." Wore a pair of tights as part of a Halloween costume & found them to be very soft & comfortable. In fact my friend who helped me pick them out, she didn't think less of me when I admitted to liking them. In fact she just smiled & said "what did I tell you?" I began to think why not. Would occasionally (after all guys aren't supposed to) wear tights around the house. Tried some support pantyhose too; found they help my legs when they are feeling tired & achy. Yes life is too short, so if I like wearing tights or pantyhose because I think they are soft & comfortable so be it, although except for around the house I will keep them hinder under my my pants.

I've been disabled since birth by Cerebral Palsy, been using a wheelchair since ~ 7 years old, and have poor leg circulation because I could never walk. I've always wanted to wear female clothes, esp. pantyhose or tights. Fem clothes fit my 5'0" body better, too.

Some of the store brands are ok, some itch like crazy - ditto for more expensive name brands. But the pantyhose from HUE are very nice feeling. Ditto for some of HUE tights, as well as most HANES tights. If I had to guess, it's probably either the dye or the way they are woven, or both.

I've found a little trick to disguise hair - wear a nice feeling pair of "light support pantyhose" under one pair of your favorite color - even if your favorite color pantyhose have itched before, the support pantyhose will be the only thing you feel, plus one pair sets up a light pattern called the moir effect (I think that's what its called) with the other pair. It's a very interesting effect.

The article is spot on!

I have worn tights for over 30 years. I started out of curiosity by wearing my sister's tights. When I first got married I did occasionally steal my wife's tights and wore them. But for other reasons we divorced. I am now remarried and I can wear tights, skirts and dresses to my heart's content. I am so happy. My wife likes me wearing skirts because it gives her 'easy access'. Wearing sliky tights in bed is a fantastic feeling. I have now started waxing my legs and the smoothness just makes it all so much better. I do not want hairy legs again. My wife lets me use her epilator. Life is great.

I am sad for those all those who think that all men who wear women's clothes are gay - wrong! I have a wonderful relationship with my wife and after so many years of feeling guilty about my crossdressing am now content in life.

Hello all, Im a 27 year old male I use to work for Sams Club and I worked in the freezer cooler area, My girlfriend at the time bought me thermal underwear to help keep me warm but I noticed when I was in the freezer I would sweat and it would soak them and it got worst when I had to come out of the freezer. It sucked. Never in my life did I ever think I would put on a pair of pantyhose but my girl friend told me to try them, Not thinking it would be much different but to my surprise it worked out great. If I do sweat I don't notice. One thing that did bug me was it pulled my leg hairs so I did shave them and it was worth it. I no longer work at Sam's club but I now have a job where Im outside almost all day, so during the winter is the only time I where them as a form of winter clothing. I would like to see pantyhose manufactures market there products for men in the major department stores to help open the trend of men in pantyhose to the public.

Mail man, I work outside also and you are correct they keep you warmer in the winter, prevent chaffing especially in the summer and can be great support for tired achy legs any time. I wear them winter, spring, summer and fall. If I do not wear them I am miserable at work anymore. What's not to like? Men should not fear the hose. Wearing pantyhose won't make a transvestite!

Thanks for all your comments. It is just as simple as if you are comfortable then don't worry about what some narrow minded folks might think. Often people who are bothered by something like a man wearing pantyhose for style, health or comfort have their own hang ups.

Men wear tights for various reason as it unisex not for women only, it for both, I usual wear tights for long time since i was 5 years old kid and now Im wear tights under mini skirt or knitwear jumper dress that make lots comfortable - men can wear tights, skirt,dress,etc.. as it normal clothes as unisex :)

Excellent review of the subject. You and I had similar childhoods and came to the same conclusion regarding wearing tights as a man. The older I get the more I realize they are simy an article of clothing. I could see people wondering why a man might wear a bra as men typically do not have breasts requiring support (though as the populace fattens Seinfelds Bro or was it Mansierre may alter this notion). But guys have legs that get cold, have circulation issues and in my case this guy finds them so comfortable, it's silly not to wear them.

I have to chuckle when men are confronted with wearing them and they reply "I'll stick to long underwear". You mean you'd rather wear a bulky garment that restricts your movement, that's not as warm, is cotton so the sweat will collect there and make you colder, falls in the crotch further cramping "your style and future family" and in reality is just cotton tights? Talk about semantics.

I suffer from chronic leg cramps and pain. Wearing pantyhose has help eliminate it without the side effects of drugs.

OK, they are uncomfortable in the heat of the summer, but that is a small price to pay for the relief that they give with the leg pain. I just wish I started wearing them years earlier.

I used to say that until I tried it. You might be surprised.

yikes, i wouldn't wear one but i love to see women in them :)

bob22 on September 05, 2010:

The only reason they don't find em comfortable is that instead of learning ppl just go cheap and get the garbage they paid 50 cents for lol. Ask women who know what they are talking about and suddenly you enter a world where pantyhose are comfortable and durable.

Instead of buying the dollar store brands, go for something of quality, if it still itches, remove the hair on your legs and if it run at the toes then maybe its time to clip your nails freak lol.

Most complaints from women about pantyhose come from ignorance, cheapskating and hairy legs or long toenails lol. The main problem is usually dollar store brands.

If you want comfy hose, go with wolford, and before you scream about the price , see how long they last vs dollar store crap and you will see they are actually the cheapest hose you will ever find as you will wear it for years, dollar store crap might last enough to be worn twice. Oh and get the proper size of course, for men its probably not an issue since it already takes guts to show up at the cash in front of other customers to buy a pair of pantyhose but Ive seen chicks buy a size smaller because they were ashamed of their true size lol then they complain I mean come on use your head. If someone laugh at you, ask him how he would like to be beaten up in public by a guy in pink pantyhose :)

OK, wow, this is a news flash. COol info! And it's funny that these aren't comfortable for women, but men don't mind.

And I think they can have an evaporative cooling effect when it is warmer out if done right.

Thank you for your comment!
