This top 10 list is definitely not your typical list of deodorants--in fact, most of these you will not find over-the-counter at any store; this list has been carefully curated to highlight some of the best and and most unique deodorants and antiperspirants on the market.
This guide will first cover the essential of men's deodorant, then review the top 10 list, followed by a couple honorable mentions, and last, review some non-traditional alternatives to using deodorant.
Regardless whether you have normal skin or sensitive skin, or need a strong antiperspirant, you'll find quite a few really good options to keep you deodorized and dry.
Essentials of Men's Deodorant
Before reviewing the top 10 deodorants, there are some essentials men need to understand as think about selecting a new deodorant.
Deodorant vs. Antiperspirant
Deodorant and antiperspirant are not the same thing, so before we review the top 10, let's review the difference between the two.
Deodorant does not prevent you from sweating. Deodorant is used to kill bacteria that causes odor and mask any lingering odor with fragrance. Deodorants do not usually contain aluminum and the other irritants found in antiperspirant. However, many deodorant's are not all natural and made with chemicals, so you can get skin irritation from deodorant.
Antiperspirants are designed to prevent you from sweating. Antiperspirants also contain some deodorant to help kill odor causing bacteria or any lingering odors.
Selecting A Fragrance That Suits You
Selecting a good deodorant is very personal process, primarily because deodorants give of a fragrance, a fragrance that you and other people will smell. These are scents that people associate with you, so it's important to select something that is as unique and interesting as you.
Deodorants are designed to eliminate odor by killing bacteria that causes odor in addition to masking odor with fragrance. The fragrance part is the tough part--many men struggle to identify with a fragrance that suits their chemistry and personality.
My best advice to chose something that's unique to you and your chemistry (not something that's familiar to everyone on the planet, like Degree, Gillette, Old Spice, and Axe). While I will cover some of the consumer favorites at the very end of this review, they are not on the top 10 list, for this very reason--they are just too ubiquitous and uninteresting.
Good Deodorants Aren't Always Cheap
While we're on the topic of fragrance, let's talk about money. The rare and exotic deodorants generally come at a higher price point.
If don't want to smell like Speed Stick (and I know some of you like that, and that's fine), then it's going to cost a little more. Some of the higher quality deodorants, especially the natural ones, source some of the best quality ingredients for your skin.
Healthy vs. Industrial Deodorants
There are basically two kinds of deodorant on the market. The kind that they sell at the grocery store, Wal-Mart, and Target. These are the more industrial deodorants--tried and true and liked and used by millions of men worldwide. One caveat, some of the major men's skin care brands, also make some industrial deodorants that are sold at a premium.
Then there are healthy deodorants, a fairly new concept on the deodorant market. These are deodorants that are made with fewer or no artificial chemicals, and tend to be healthier on the skin and the body. However, these deodorants are not easily found--you have to look for them.
Personally, I used the industrial deodorants for years, up until the point that my skin could no longer take them. My body began developing rashes, so I migrated to the healthier deodorants and never looked back.
How To Wear Solid Deodorant
White solid deodorants are a point of frustration for many men--cakes of white under your arms is not sex. In fact, there are guys who won't even entertain the idea of buying a solid deodorant, because this issue.
However, deodorant technology in recent years seems to have improved quite a bit--some of the better deodorants are an "invisible solid," and generally marketed as such.
However, if you find a solid that you really like and worried about caking, then there is one thing you can do that usually resolves the problem.
To prevent caking, cut your underarm hair down so it's not so long. This will prevent the deodorant from clinging to too much hair, thus giving you an invisible application. If you have long underarm hair, it's basically like dipping a paint brush into a can of paint, so the trick is to trim the bristles.
If you are experience any sort or redness, burning, or itching from your deodorant, you should stop using your deodorant immediately and let the skin heal. If the redness does not subside, you may need to see a doctor for a cortisone cream or some other skin treatment.
If you are experiencing no irritation now, it doesn't mean that you won't in the future. As I said earlier, my skin didn't become sensitive until I hit my late 20s, and then I had to go to completely all natural deodorants.
Managing Sweat Stains
Raise Armpit Stain Remover
If you get sweat stains on your clothes, it's because of the antiperspirant you're using. The aluminum in antiperspirant causes the yellowing.
I experienced this problem for years, and just eventually decided to come off antiperspirants and use deodorants only. This solved the problem overnight.
However, if you insist on wearing antiperspirant, then you may want to pick-up a bottle of Raise Armpit Stain Remover for $22.
Home, Work, & Travel: You Need More Than one
When you buy deodorant, you should always buy more than one. You need one deodorant for home, one travel size to keep your desk drawer at work, and one travel size to use on-the-go when you travel on the road.
Top 10 Best Deodorants for Men
Without further ado, here are the top 10 deodorants for men.
1. Lavanilla Pure Vanilla Deodorant
Lavanilla is my all-time favorite deodorant. Unlike most deodorants on the market that are made specifically for men or women, the Lavanilla "Vanilla" scented deodorant is unisex--so it's great for guys and gals.
The other thing I like about this deodorant is that it's 100% all natural, so it doesn't irritate my skin. As I've gotten older, I've found that skin tends to break out from the harsh chemicals found in most deodorants. With Lavanilla all my breakouts are gone.
Lastly, the vanilla scent is really what makes this product awesome. Many of the deodorants today are so complex in their scents, so it's nice to have something that's just simple and fresh. Not to mention, vanilla is also a natural aphrodisiac--so wear this if you want to arouse your significant other.
The stick is a white solid--and I'll be honest, I had my hesitations about going to a solid, cause I don't like any white caking. But this stuff goes on smooth and clear.
Lavanilla retails for $15 on Amazon. It's also available in a travel size for $9.
2. Malin + Goetz Eucalyptus Deodorant
Malin + Goetz is a New York-based skin care company offering natural and organic skin care.
Their eucalyptus deodorant is an awarding winning product that's been featured in a number of men's magazines. People rave over the smell, and for men with sensitive skin issues, say that it works great at preventing any sort of irritation.
The eucalyptus is known for it's antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory benefits. The product also contains citronellyl, a key ingredient in neutralizing odor.
Malin + Goetz Ecualyptus deodorant retails for $20 on Amazon.
3. Crystal Body Stick Deodorant For Men
No deodorant gets overlooked more than rock deodorant, and yet it's probably one of the most effective against body odor (and healthiest for you).
Rock deodorant is made from mineral salt that's unscented, leaves no residue on the skin, and goes on clear. The salt in this product works by neutralizing bacteria on the skin, thus eliminating odor.
So you might be asking how do you apply dry crystal to your underarms? It's very simple. You just run the rock under water and apply to your underarms or use right after you step out of the shower.
For you guys with sensitive skin, this is another great product to give a try. I used this stuff for years, and experienced no irritation. In terms of odor coverage, I think it works very well. On days with heavy sweating, you may need to apply later in the day to maintain odor control.
And, for guys that love value, this is probably the best in terms of savings. One of these deodorants will last you about a year.
All Natural Body Stick Deodorant for Men retails for about $4 on Amazon.
4. Herban Cowboy Wild Deodorant
Herban Cowboy was the first to really make an eco-friendly deodorant that smells manly and that's directly marketed to men.
This line is quite popular among guys who want a deodorant that won't irritate the skin, yet offers familiar masculine scents that are woodsy, spicy, or mountain fresh. The deodorant goes on clear and won't stain your clothes. The "Wild" scented deodorant is probably the most popular among guys--it smells warm and spicy.
You can buy this deodorant on Amazon for about $6.
5. Jack Black Pit Boss Antiperspirant & Deodorant
Jack Black is a popular men's skin care company with a wide variety of products for men, including a deodorant/antiperspirant. This is the only antiperspirant I'll be covering in this review.
For men who are willing to spend the extra money, I think they'll find that this invisible solid-stick antiperspirant and deodorant is unusually effective. In fact, most men who use this deodorant hail it's effectiveness to keep sweat at bay.
The deodorant is also not overly musky--it does smell manly, it's just a light manly that's not overpowering; some guys report that it smells like the original version of Speed Stick.
This deodorant retails for $16 on Amazon.
6. Silver Shield Deodorant
Silver Shield is probably one of the best kept secrets--and it also a cult following for a handful of men who swear that this is the best deodorant they've ever used.
Unlike any other deodorant on the market, Silver Shield is made with colloidal silver. Colloidal silver has been used for ages as a germicide and disinfect. It's antimicrobial properties help neutralize odor.
This is a unisex product with a fresh scent that's neutral enough to be worn by both men and women.
Silver Shield retails for about $10 on Amazon.
7. Clarins Deodorant & Antiperspirant Stick
Popular Parisian skin care brand, Clarins, offers a deodorant and antiperspirant for men that's alcohol free. The deodorant is a solid, but it glides on easy without a sticky feeling.
The deodorant has a light citrus scent with its extracts of orange, lemon, and grapefruit. This product is considered gentle enough for sensitive skin, though it does contain aluminum.
This product retails for $16 on Amazon.
8. D.R. Harris Arlington Deodorant Stick
Direct from London, D.R. Harris, is a popular brand for men (including the Prince of Wales), and their best-selling Arlington deodorant has a very loyal and royal following.
The scent of this product is quite unique, fresh, and manly. The key notes are citrus and fern.
Of all the products reviewed here, this is the only one that use an ingredient called bacteriostat; bacteriostat prevents bacteria from reproducing, thus helping to completely eliminate any odor.
This product retails for $13 on Amazon.
9. C.O. Bigelow Elixir Black Deodorizing Body Spray
With its hypnotic scent, C.O. Bigelow Elixir Black deodorizing spray, is a truly unique product, and the only spray-on deodorant featured in this review.
The fragrance formulation of this product is really quite special and exotic. For you guys that like Axe products (which I don't), this is a great product to graduate too, that will give you the same effect, but with more refined and exotic fragrance profile. The key fragrances are agar wood and tonka bean with undertones of amber, musk, and vanilla. The body wash for this product is also great too.
Elixir Black retails for about $6 on Amazon.
10. Designer Fragrance Deodorants
There are too many to list, so I'm going to put them all in one group--designer fragrance deodorants. I love designer fragrance deodorants, and wore them for years.
If you have a favorite designer cologne, the deodorant is also a great option. The price point is generally higher, but well worth it. Plus, these deodorants also last a lot longer than the cheap deodorants purchased at the store. In fact, one of these will generally last several months.
However, one draw back is that these are generally not made with all natural products, though some of the new formulations are no longer made with alcohol. However, you will find that many designer fragrance deodorants are made with alcohol and propylene glycol--known skin irritants; like I said, I was able to tolerate these for years with no problem, but for some guys this could potentially be an issue.
I also think these are great alternatives to wearing fragrance. As your body heats up, these emulate the same effect as wearing cologne--you smell great, but without it being to overpowering.
To check out designer deodorants, see Men's Designer Deodorants at Sephora.
I realize there are a number of men who would see my top 10 list as too fancy and maybe too pricey. For guys that want a great deodorant that you can buy over-the-counter at your local local store, then the following would probably be your best two options.
Degree for Men Antiperspirant & Deodorant, Cool Comfort Scent
Of all the antiperspirants on the market, this is the #1 best seller among men. It has more positive reviews than any other antiperspirant or deodorant on Amazon.
Men love this product because it keeps them dry, and the cool comfort scent is a classic scent that many men enjoy (and other people enjoy smelling).
This antiperspirant provides 24-hour protection to keep you dry and smelling good, and according to the reviews, this product lives up to it's promise.
A six-pack of this deodorant retails for about $20.
Old Spice High Endurance Deodorant, Pure Sport Scent
Of all the deodorants on the market, this is the #1 best seller among men. Unlike the previous product, notice I said deodorant, because this is not an antiperspirant.
Men like this product because it holds-up and will deodorize you all day, no matter the conditions.
The Pure Sport scent is a manly fragrance, and to quote the words of one customer, it has an "alluringly timeless scent." This happens to be one of those deodorants that guys wear and people ask, what cologne are you wearing?
Pure Sport is nice, and for a men that like a classic manly scent that provides all day coverage, then you'll like this product.
You can get a 4-pack of this deodorant for about $10 on Amazon.

Non-Traditional Deodorant Alternatives
In addition to the top 10 above, I think you might be interested in checking out some non-traditional deodorant alternatives.
Sweat Block is one of these insanely crazy and effective antiperspirant products, but it's not like your traditional antiperspirant.
Sweat Block is a moist pad that you pat under your arms for a minute right before you go to bed. The pads contain no scent, just aluminum chloride to control your sweat.
One application will control sweat up to 7 days, and one box includes 8 pads, so you get an 8 week supply in one box.
There are over 1,400 positive reviews of this product on Amazon, so it has a very loyal following. Sweat Block runs $20 on Amazon for one box.
For guys that just can't seem to tolerate any deodorant, even sensitive skin deodorant, you may want to check out some body powders.
A number of men just use body powder under their arms to keep them dry and to keep odor at bay.
And, when it's super hot and humid outside, I sometimes add this in addition to my deodorant. Body powder really does help keep you cool and dry.
One of my personal favorites is Balla Powder. I've written extensively on body powder, so check out my article on the 12 Most Popular Body Powders for Men.
Stainless Steel Deodorant Bar
A number of chefs use stainless steel soap bars to help remove odor from their hands like onion and garlic.
De Odor Works is now offering an under arm deodorizing stainless steel bar that does the same thing, but with body odor.
The reviews are mixed on these--people either love or hate this product. Obviously there's no chemical or anything that's applied to the skin--it's just wetting a smooth, stainless steel bar and applying to the skin. The steel reacts to the odor, neutralizing it on-site.
This product retails for $30 on Amazon.
If you're really struggling with body odor, you may want to check out Body Mint. Body Mint is a dietary supplement that you take daily that helps deodorize your body from the inside out.
The key ingredient in Body Mint is chlorophyllin--a semi-synthetic derivative of chlorophyl. Chlorophyllin is known to help reduce body odor and gas.
With a 4-star rating and over a 100 reviews on Amazon, this seems to be a pretty effective product. A 60-count bottle retails for about $15 on Amazon.
Himalayan Salt Soap
Himalayan salt soap is an all natural, deodorizing bar that won't clog your pores or stain your clothes. The salt in this bar kills bacteria that causes odor, so it's great to use all over your body, especially your underarms and feet.
Some people do report a little bit of stinging that lasts for a few seconds when using this soap, however, it seems to subside with regular use.
While this bar may not work well as just a stand alone product, it's a good addition to your routine to help deodorize your body.
This bar retails for $6 on Amazon.
roninhouston on July 29, 2016:
I use something similar to Number One, Lavilin. Was looking for something without a lot of chemicals, especially aluminum. This is a single-application underarm deodorant cream. Available at Amazon.
Lavilin is alcohol free, aluminum-free, paraben free. It is water resistance, swimming and strenuous physical activities do not interfere with level and effectiveness. And it eliminates perspiration odor up to 7 days. (Your results may vary).
A small amount of the cream is long lasting up to 2 to 7 days. This is an herbal extract moisturizer that soothes and protects. I have been using this for last 12 months and find it to be very effective. Only need to apply every 3 to 4 days, I apply after my daily shower.
I also apply a cornstarch powder with aloe and vitamin E. Since I have read the articles here I am going to try the Balla powder and the Lavanilla.
