Toning Shoes Comparison ¦ Guide to Toning Shoes for 2014

Compare Toning Shoes Before You Buy

There are many toning shoes on the market and each claims to be the best, offering faster toning, improved weight loss and a healthier way of walking. Love them or hate them, toning shoes have become a part of the fight against the flab to gain an extra advantage to win the war.

But do toning shoes really work? Many men and women have made the switch to this type of footwear and claim they have been a huge help, and have helped to speed up toning and sculpt a leaner and more attractive body. They are highly beneficial for some sufferers of painful foot conditions too, and offer many wellness benefits. Recent research has neither managed to prove nor disprove the benefits of toning shoes, although the overall feeling appears to be that these shoes can be highly effective for many people, although not for all.

Manufacturers have previously claimed that their shoes can generate up to 30% more muscle activity in the lower body, with some apparently speeding up weight loss, although most brands have now dropped the percentages and instead concentrate on the many wellness benefits that the shoes offer. For instance, most of this footwear helps to correct the posture and provides extra cushioning for the joints. Few would argue that these shoes are not highly comfortable to wear, with the comfort being felt not just in the feet, but throughout the lower body. For many people its the comfort that is the real reason for wearing the shoes rather than any help that they offer with getting the lower body into shape.

Scroll down to get a summary of all the toning shoe brands available including toning boots and toning sandals for the summer. Get the skinny on what are the best toning shoes for Spring/Summer 2014, and check out the prices. They have fallen substantially since they first came on the market in 2007.

Just remember, that it doesn't matter what shoes you use for exercise or working out, if you don't clock up the miles your lower body will not get into shape, even with the benefits claimed by many of these shoe manufacturers!

Ryn Toning Shoes

Ryn toning shoes have been around since 2002, although they were the product of a lot of research and development, so really started life in the 1990s. Whilst new to American shores, they have won considerable respect in their native South Korea, and more recently in Japan and Europe. They are in the same class as MBT toning shoes and Chung Shi shoes, and have a price tag to match, costing upwards of $200 a pair. However what you get for your money is incredible stability, and a toning shoes that can be worn off-road and on soft ground, gradients and wherever you care to walk.

The stability comes from an innovative sole which uses an air cushion rather than EVA foam rubber to provide the cushioning. This doesn't deform underfoot, and cushions without being soft and squidgy, but the toning shoes still provide excellent cushioning for the joints. The 7-part sole is robust and hard wearing, and whilst the initial outlay is high, you will be rewarded with a design which will last for years. The shoes also use a Sympatex membrane in the trail shoes to give unbeatable waterproofing, and the air tunnel system in the soles does not take on water, great for the rainy months. The shoes offer a 45º angle sole for maximum toning, and promise to get the lower legs working with a design which prevents any side to side roll, making them good for pronators.

  • Highly stable design which can be worn on or off road
  • Sympatex membranes used for 100% water and wind proofing
  • 45º angle rocker bottom for superior toning and strengthening
  • Stable design suitable for overpronators and supinators, with excellent arch support
  • Ease the strain on the ankles, knees, hips and lower back

  • Design first rate, but at the upper end of the price scale from $120 and up
  • The shoes are a little chunky, so if you want to disguise the fact that you are toning, these are not for you.

Skechers Shape Ups SRR - Resistance Runner

Method of Action

The Shape Ups SRR Resistance Runner is one of the new generation of toning shoes from Skechers which builds on the highly successful rocker bottom design of their Shape Ups range. The SRR is designed for running and jogging rather than walking, and incorporates an innovative redesign of the Kinetic Wedge, plus a leaf spring energy return system for the ultimate in shock absorption.

Skechers have worked on their design to produce one of the most stylish toning sneakers on the market, and have improved the comfort factor considerably in the SRR. The shoes really do give the feeling of floating rather than running, with exceptional shock absorption to keep you running for longer. The arch support is first rate, making them excellent running shoes for flat feet, and their toning percentages are off the scale.

The Shape Ups Resistance Runner is one of the few toning shoes which helps to correct supination and pronation of the feet according to Skechers, although if you overpronate I would recommend not running in the shoes. Best to be on the safe side and to choose a pronation control running shoe. They keep the bones of the feet properly aligned, and correct the stride for a healthy run, great comfort, and can help to prevent common injuries caused by excessive rolling of the feet.

  • The degree of pronation control the shoes offer is questionable. For moderate to severe overpronators, if you want to run you are probably best with a running shoe which is specifically created for overpronators.

These are the toning shoes worn by Kim Kardashian in the latest Skechers Shape Ups Adverts which are currently doing the rounds. These toning shoes partner the SRR Resistance Runner, and add resistance training to your workout. The shoes are designed for higher impact activities, and whilst they can be used for walking, the greatest benefits come when you really break a sweat at the gym.

The shoes feature the Shape Ups Kinetic Wedge to help generate muscle activity and cushion the joints. A dual density PU layer has been added to give greater support, and to guide the foot through a muscle activating heel to toe roll. The heel is rigid to prevent foot slippage, and a roll bridge stops lateral movement.

A recent case study asked women to swap their normal trainers for the Skechers SRT Radius Trainer for everyday use. After 6 weeks the test group lost an average of 3.25 lbs, reduced body fat by 1.125%, increased lower back endurance by 37% and gluteus strength by 41%.

The midsole is 1.75 inches – the highest from the shape ups range – yet the shoes look sleek, and are more stable than the Shape Ups walking range. There is a good choice of styles for both men and women, and the Shape Ups SRT is one of the most attractive toning shoes on the market.

Walking for Wellness

The British National Health Service is the latest in a long line of medical institutions now championing the cause of walking to get fit and reduce illness. They are actively promoting a new campaign to get people more active by walking more often. It is low impact exercise which can be both gentle on the body or a demanding workout.

It has been medically proven that people who walk often are less likely to suffer from major illness. As you would expect from being fitter, walkers suffer from fewer heart attacks, fewer muscular problems, osteoarthritis is reduced and mental health is better. Tests suggest a lower incidence of cancer and even Alzheimer’s diseases is less prevalent in those who regularly get out and about.

Most people walk around 5000 steps each day, which equates to around 3 miles walking. However, this beneficial exercise time has potential to be turned into more of a workout. Shoe manufacturers have been quick to realize this and and have started to offer shoes which can give an added boost to walking and turn most daily activities into a toning session.

The toning shoe sensation started in earnest with the FitFlop back in May 2007 and in the three years since that fateful May release date, toning shoe sales have exploded with virtually all of the major footwear manufacturers offering a toning shoe to fill every niche, although don't expect to see Nike toning shoes, they are showing no signs of entering the market.

The British love affair with toning sandals continues, with sales of the bottom enhancing, calf crunching and fashionable sandals stronger than ever. Trimsole toning shoes offer both men and women the chance to speed up toning and getting in shape for summer. These toning shoes may get the bottom, calves and hamstrings working harder, but they are popular for their style just as much as their lower body enhancing benefits.

What’s more, the sandals offer a distinct advantage over many of the other toning sandals on the market, priced at half that of the competitors at the time of writing, with 2 pairs currently available for a paltry £35. Whilst the cost is low, the quality is high, and style is certainly not lacking with great looking sandals and even boots as part of the range.

Trimsole sandals use a similar design to other popular toning sandals, with a triple density TrimSole® Trim-Tech sole featuring a high density EVA/PU blend in the heel for superior shock absorption, a muscle enhancing low density mid section, and a mid density toe section for a firm push off. Trimsole are believed to help relieve pain from a wide range of medical conditions relating to poor posture, and are exceptionally comfortable to wear.

Skechers Tone Ups

Skechers Tone Ups Toning Sandals

Method of Action

Skechers Tone Ups sandals feature a wedge heel to provide maximum shock absorption, with a gradual density midsole to help activate the muscles and promote a smooth heel to toe roll. Whilst highly stable, the foam midsole introduces instabilities in the walking gait, which gets a greater range of muscle fibers activated to maintain balance. The shoes tone the calves, hamstrings and buttocks, and help to increase strength and stamina throughout the lower body.

The sandals are designed to maximize comfort, with a super soft foot-bed for shock absorption, and a gel insert in the heel for added comfort. The toe post is rounded and soft to avoid the abrasion normally associated with flip-flop sandals, and the non stretch fabric uppers keep them firmly on the feet to stop them flip-flopping against the heel.

These toning shoes promote a healthy posture and help to align the bones in the feet, legs and back correctly, easing the strain on the muscles and allowing the body to move efficiently. They are amongst the most comfortable sandals for summer, and a great choice as a shoe for around the house to keep the muscles well toned. Skechers Tone Ups are offer probably the most expansive range of any toning shoes, with excellent scope for combination with any summer outfit,

Crocs Tone

Method of Action:

Crocs have used three elements in the Corcs Tone toning shoes to ensure stability and comfort whilst the lower body gets more of a workout when walking. The patent pending design uses a sculpted rubber outsole, with rounded pods on the heel and in the forefoot. The pods help to activate key muscles in the lower and upper legs to help tone faster.

A toning ring around the pods adds stability to the shoes and more support for the feet, and the footbed uses Croslite - a soft and springy material which takes on the shape of the foot for the ultimate in comfort all day long.

As with the popular Crocs shoes, there is the added benefit of a roomy toe box to allow the toes to spread out naturally, soft forgiving uppers which goes easy on the joints of the toes, and a highly breathable upper to get air to the feet to keep them cool.

The shoes have been likened to walking on clouds for the comfort they offer, and the design is hardly noticeable as a toning shoe.

  • Design to promote healthy feet and personal wellness
  • Highly comfortable design to cushion the joints
  • Targets muscles in the lower and upper legs for a workout
  • Soft footbed moulds to the shape of the feet for a highly comfortable and personal fit
  • Soft uppers with a roomy toe box make them excellent bunion shoes
  • Anti-microbial footbed to prevent odour
  • Easy to clean design

  • If you love Crocs shoes, you'll love Crocs Tone, however rubber shoes that are full of holes is not to everyone's taste
  • Whilst Crocs shoes are adopted by nurses and hospital staff, these rounded soled shoes may not meet the safety requirements.
  • Its still too early to tell how well these toning shoes work the legs.

It is difficult to call a winner out of all of the major players, with each model and brand of toning shoes offering its own twist on toning. Reebok look great and are one of the most comfortable trainers you will find. For a more active workout they are the good option.

The FitFlop™ wins hands down on style in the toning sandals category, with a huge selection on the market with FitFlop™ Boots an excellent choice for winter.

New Balance toning shoes are new on the block and offer great comfort, and have an excellent reputation. The initial feedback from customers on their Rock & Tone trainers is that the shoes are great, they tone, and are comfortable to wear. However when it comes to style, the latest New Balance True Balance shoes get the best looking toning trainer vote, being fantastic sneakers in their own right.

Of the orthopedic shoe manufacturers, both MBT and Chung Shi shoes offer similar benefits, and with not much to choose between. They offer a far greater range of wellness benefits than any of the other shoes listed in this hub, and are more of a lifestyle choice to correct posture and relieve pain than just toning shoes. You will end up paying more for the extra benefits, being at the upper end of the price scale.

Finally, if you want to move at a faster speed and get the best possible toning session then there is no competition. It has to be the Shape Ups SRR Resistance Runner.

Toning shoes offer far more than toning alone, and are an excellent addition to any healthy lifestyle. Getting fresh air in the lungs and taking exercise is an excellent way of clearing the mind and is one of the greatest stress relievers. With the added benefits of toning shoes to increase your pace of walking, tone muscles faster, and bring more muscle groups into play, you will get a more thorough workout.

Putting Toning Shoes to the Test

The ACE study tested Reebok Easytones, Skechers Shape Ups, and MBT shoes. The ACE Report claims than none of these toning shoes raise metabolism, and help with burning calories, yet only one of the major brands under test laid any claims to that, which came from the outcome of a case study completed over 8 months with 40 women as opposed to 12 fit and healthy girls over 5 minutes. If anyone was probably not going to benefit that greatly, it’s was the young fit and toned. New Balance actually claim percentages for their shoes of 10 % more weight loss in the case of True Balance toning shoes, however they were not part of the study, with their running shoes used as a control against which the toning shoes were compared.

FitFlop™ toning shoes did not feature either, and they have been quite open about their tests at universities in the United Kingdom, with the shoes deemed beneficial for easing the strain on the knees, as well as increasing muscle activation. Whilst MBT shoes have benefited from the toning shoes buying spree, they have never claimed that they increase toning to the lower body by set degree, being more of a healthy living choice to help with foot pain. Reebok too have not claimed to increase the metabolism, only muscle activity, although the study found no evidence of that. The debate, it would seem, rages on.

Are the claims really so bold?

Of course, the claims are not actually outrageous, and when it comes to toning the principle behind toning shoes is sound. The shoes all add instabilities into the walking gait, either by instability pods, double rockers, rocker bottoms or EVA foam creations; however the principle is the same. The shoes replicate walking over soft sand which is hard work, and involves increased effort and muscle activity. There is no doubt that if you run or walk barefoot on the beach, you will be exercising more muscles and will get much better body tone far more quickly. The shoes should therefore work, and the manufacturers, using case studies and various independent tests, have attempted to prove this. The Skechers case study lasted for 8 months and indicated that on average weight was lost, lean muscle was built up and strength and stamina was improved.

Across the pond in the UK, FitFlop™ are receiving high praise, along with the likes of Chung Shi shoes, for offering excellent benefits in terms of posture correction, and help with many common painful joint conditions. Similar claims have been made about all of the major rocker soled toning shoes, in that they do offer the wearer considerable health benefits, something backed up by the Masai Barefoot Technology research and the sufferers of many painful foot and bone conditions.

Helping ease Foot and Lower Leg Pain

Since early last year, there has been wealth of testimonials from toning shoes devotees who claim that they not only help tone, but also to help with foot pain. I know 3 people personally, who have bad knees and joints, who wear MBT shoes and say they are the only shoes they can wear which make walking comfortable. Similarly with Skechers Shape Ups, with two friends who have foot problems who again claim the shoes to be highly comfortable and ideal for everyday exercising, and far better than standard running shoes. As for how much they tone, that has been a mixed bag, with the comments I have gained through my hub and blogs and their feedback suggesting that the shoes do not work for everyone. Many people do swear by them it has to be said, with a few swearing about them.

What do the foot care professionals say?

Doctors appear to be split on the issue of the health benefits, and naturally without full research on the effectiveness of the shoes with specific disabilities it is a difficult one to call. However, many have seen benefits relating to some conditions, but by no means are they a universal solution to foot or joint pain. Depending on who is asked, the answer will be different. Some claim that the unstable sole could be bad for people with balance issues, and increase the chance of injury.

However many foot professionals who treat plantar fasciitis, heel pain, stress fractures see the possible benefits. Podiatrists often prescribe orthotic insoles to treat foot conditions, and the thick EVA midsole which is present in the majority of the rocker bottom toning shoes is essentially a really big cushioning insole. Anyone who has problematic joints can gain pain relief from toning shoes thanks to the shock absorption the shoes offer. The thick sole offers excellent cushioning for anyone with heel pain, whilst the movement of the foot is much more natural, stretching the plantar fascia. By simulating barefoot walking in soft sand they offer a good stretching exercise to help heal plantar fascia conditions. The shoes offer cushioning to help sufferers of Morton’s Neuroma and heel spurs, with customers claiming that they are comfortable and helpful for bunions, and many models of toning shoes can accommodate a custom or standard orthotic insole for greater stride correction if required.

Some models, such as Avia and FitFlop™ have the backing of the APMA for the help they can offer in easing the strains and stresses with some conditions, with the designs at least recognized as being of some value to sufferers of many foot problems.

What to expect and what not to expect from toning shoes

Expect comfort, don’t expect miracles from your toning shoes. If you get out and exercise you’ll be doing so in a healthy way, and stand to get much more benefit from the exercise with toning shoes, although to what degree remains a topic of debate. One thing is for sure. They are not the universal solution to weight loss; toning and foot problems and they will more than likely give variable results. However, if you don’t increase the hours walking it’s going to take a long time to tone anything. 30% more toning when you are getting none, is still none after all.

I am a firm believer in the powers of toning shoes, and whilst I cannot say 100% to what extent the shoes work, their benefits to foot health make them worth trying in my book, and for the people who really have gained value from these shoes, there will be no changing their minds. Couple a pair of toning shoes with a dedicated walk of an hour a day and a healthy diet, and you should really see the benefits.

Do bear in mind that if you are looking for an instant solution to body shape, there really is no substitute for heading to the gym and working out in an intensive training program. For anyone who doesn’t want to, can’t afford it, or doesn’t have the time, toning shoes are the best bet yet!

michifus (author) on April 30, 2013:

I must have missed that when I was updating this hub - you can get them in Europe now, and for some time. Good spot. Ive updated it now.

Some people have sustained injuries from wearing this type of shoe, but considering the millions of pairs sold it really is a very small minority. Consider the number of people who sustain injuries from wearing worn athletic shoes, heels etc and it puts it into perspective a little.

Unfortunately, the people signing up for class actions has scared a number of small manufacturers who have stopped producing the shoes. Much to the disappointment of many customers who love the models they produced. However many brands are still going strong, fortunately.

Personally I think that the shoes benefit a great deal of people. Buy them for the comfort. Only walk in them, don't go jogging, and replace them as they wear and you should be fine. Of course, if you experience any pain or discomfort stop wearing them!

Guido on April 29, 2013:

Thanks for the continuously updated info.

About Avia you say "almost impossible to get in Europe", but I see there are several offers on and

The hype of toning shoes has deflated now in 2013 and - I believe you know - new class actions are expected from people experiencing injuries due to the use of unstable shoes. Although in extreme circumstances harmful effects could happen, I'm still convinced that toning shoes are beneficial for the 99% of normal healthy people like myself. I have been wearing toning shoes for two years, almost daily, and I'll continue to do so. Waiting for your personal words on this matter.

I also agree with the previous comment on "women target" for toning shoes, but several models from MBT, Reebok, Skechers and NB are really gender neutral (obviously it depends on colors) , wide shape, and they are very comfy also for a male foot.

michifus (author) on May 05, 2012:

New Balance True Balance, Skechers, FitFlop, Ryn, all do mens versions. They just dont publicize them as much.

i'm wondering where the men's toning shoes are? it seems as though the majority of these shoes are for women, i guess because women consumers dominate the weight loss market??????? so unfair!

darlene on April 29, 2012:

Just a few comments from personal experience: Dr scholls - hurt my feet during and after wearing them. Sketchers - I have owned 3 pairs of the original style - comfy enough, not much toning noticed. Fit Flops - not my thing - could not stand the toe post so not much use. Champion slip on toning shoes (not sure of the actual name) - LOVED them! just wored out my second pair and unfortunately they are discontinued because I could feel them working everyday.

michifus (author) on April 18, 2012:

They have been discontinued unfortunately. If I find out anywhere that sells them, I will let you know.

If people run in them and they are fine - please comment. Personally I do not think that you should run in these shoes. Stick to walking in them

magda on April 02, 2012:

Hi, does anyone know if Avia iTone shoes are good for running? Or are they only 'walking' shoes?

michifus (author) on March 09, 2012:

Thankachan - sorry i didn't include your comment, no telephone numbers allowed. AS for your question about the cheapest shoes for knee pain..... This style of shoe may help - depending on what is causing the pain - and the shoes cost around 30-50 dollars to start. Find out from a doctor what is causing your knee pain before trying these shoes. They may get rid of the pain, but they may make it worse. These shoes can only help with certain conditions. You may be better with orthotic insoles

michifus (author) on January 18, 2012:

If you are going to the gym. Do you need toning shoes? Id say no. Use them for walking. However, Reebok Traintone are designed for the gym so they would be your best bet

I am looking to get a pair of Avia's.

Trudy on January 15, 2012:

I find the most comfortable for me are the Sketchers, but I also have a pair of the MBT, which I purchased at Costco a couple of years ago. They seem to be too sloppy on my heel. My husband also wears Sketchers at work. He works in a warehouse job. FYI we are 66 and 68 years of age.

michifus (author) on January 15, 2012:

Therashoe has already stopped production. One can imagine (with such devoted fans of the shoes) that this could well be for fear of multimillion dollar toning shoe lawsuits.

A great many people get real benefits from toning shoes. I personally know quite a few people who love their toning shoes for the back and knee pain relief they offer, and also just for the comfort.

Thanks for the comment Trudy - there are so many fans of toning shoes (and the benefits they bring) that it would be a terrible shame if the companies making them were to all stop production. What brand do you wear out of interest?

Trudy on January 15, 2012:

I was recently told by a local Fred Meyer show store that the toning shoes are not going to be available on the market much longer due to the class action law suit. I have been using them for my four mile mall walk every morning now and have found they help with back pain relief when I walk. I have worn them for over two years and would hate to have to find something to replace their comfort for me!! I wouldn't hike in the woods in them, but for a good walk on sidewalk areas and our local mall there is nothing better.

michifus (author) on September 07, 2011:

Hi Kit,

It takes a while to get used to toning shoes, and heavy walking in them for 8 hours a day is probably not the best choice. They are better reserved for exercise sessions and targeted workouts, rather than in the workplace.

However if your work is light with no lifting, then they could be OK with MBT the best bet in my book.

As for working your abdomen, whilst some manufacturers claim that they do increase ab involvement, its not to a major degree. Thighs - it depends what you mean. Hamstrings yes, quads much less so. Toning shoes will generally work the buttocks, hamstrings and calves.

Personally, I would go for Ryn/MBT at the top end. Mid range, the Shape Ups SRR is still the best bet for running, for walking FitFlop & Shape Ups are the most popular.

Hi there- great article! You've covered practically everything, but I'm still having trouble picking out a pair- please help?

I have an active job which involves a lot of walking around, and I'm dying to take advantage of this to lose weight and tone up. I'm particularly looking for a trainer that works on my abdomen and thighs- preferably not too hideous, and geared towards weight loss? Any ideas?

Nick on July 18, 2011:

I am impressed with the information you have given. i love these shoes.I liked Reebok's designs .

michifus (author) on July 15, 2011:

No personally tried Dr. Scholls, but I have heard good reports about them from people who have.

tatertot816 on July 13, 2011:

I forgot to add, when I had plantar plantar fasciitis, I did find Okabashi Sandals quite helpful and they have expanded their line to carry more stylish pairs since then. They had a toning effect also.

tatertot816 on July 13, 2011:

I also am curious if u tried the Dr. Scholl's "Personal Trainers for women. I just bought a pair as they reduced the price from 30 dollars to 14 bux at Wally world and I thought I can't lose for that price just to try. I was very happy with mi Avia's that I got for $10 on clearance at TJ Maxx regularly 85 bucks, i just walk so much i wear down my shoes quickly. We're on one income right now so I can't afford to plunk down $100 every few months for walking shoes.

Robberto on June 10, 2011:

Great information, very helpful.

Perhaps interesting to add: the Swiss founder of MBT created a new shoe brand and technology: Kybun's KyBoot.

And his son developed Joya shoes.

michifus (author) on June 09, 2011:

Hi Laura, unfortunately toning shoes are unlikely to increase fitness. They can give the muscles an extra workout, but as for improvements to cardiovascular health, that will only come from increasing the time you spend working out. As with Irma above, I would recommend giving FitFlop a try, as they probably have the best customer feedback for back and neck pain, although Ryn shoes and MBT have excellent reviews too. I would imaging that you need a highly stable design given your problems and Ryn toning shoes and MBT will offer that. Yep - Skechers are really chunky, and may not be best considering your previous injuries.

Laura on June 09, 2011:

Advice please!!! I have back pain and neck pain from a car accident years ago. I am looking at purchasing skechers or puma body train purely for walking around daily The skechers look so chunky! I specifically want a toning shoe to help with fitness. What can you recommend?

michifus (author) on June 08, 2011:

Hi Irma, it would really depend on the nature of your back pain, and what is causing it. However, FitFlop has been reported to help ease the pain from lower back pain from postural problems. Many people swear by them, and they can even ease pain from sciatica and degenerative disc disease. Ryn toning shoes are also a great choice.

Irma on June 08, 2011:

Hi, I was looking for a shoe to help with back pain, when walking or standing for long periods. Can you recommend something? It seems the regular walking shoes don't have enough support/cushion. Thanks

michifus (author) on May 28, 2011:

Yes, Earth is great for posture correction as is Fitflop.

Jenifer on May 28, 2011:

Ah excellent! I am looking forward to your BodyTrain review. Thanks for the tip on the SRT vs. SRR - i do prefer more of a walking shoe at this point. I'm a photographer and so i am on my feet a lot and am on a hunt for good shoes for walking and especially for posture. Years of sitting weird at the computer and carrying heavy stuff have finally taken its toll on my lower back. From your reviews, it seems like Earth shoes are best for posture correction, yes?

michifus (author) on May 28, 2011:

Thanks Jenifer. You appear to have guessed my next move. I'm in the process of writing about Bodytrain. It will be up shortly. I would narrow that selection down further, by dropping the SRR. The SRT is a much better all round shoe, the SRR just for running/jogging

Jenifer on May 26, 2011:

Awesome review! Many thanks for the in-depth insights! This article is definitley helping me in choosing the right toning/walking shoe. I have it narrowed down to Skechers SRR, SRT, FitFlop and Earth. But I am now wondering about the new Puma Body Train. Have you gotten a chance to check those out?

michifus (author) on May 05, 2011:

Hi - thanks for the comment. Whilst all the toning shoes on here have their merits, for anyone who pronates or wants to use orthotics, its difficult to recommend anything other than Ryn toning shoes, with MBT shoes also a good choice.

gandawireman on May 03, 2011:

Wow...I have really enjoyed reading and spending time on this site. So much personal time has gone into it and it is much appreciated!

My question is basically the same as Sara's (from above) however, instead of having flat feet, I have very high arches and my feet DO pronate in. I have recently been fitted for (through my orthopedist) orthodics and will be wearing them in all my closed toe shoes. I walk to work everyday (about a mile) and around town whenever possible instead of driving. I am looking for the best toning shoe to accommodate my active lifestyle. I was leaning toward a NB or Sketcher after reading all the wonderful feedback. Is there any specific feedback you can give me after hearing about my foot type and wearing orthodics?

Kind regards

michifus (author) on May 01, 2011:

Hi Sara,

If you have very flat feet, I would recommend buying a pair of toning shoes with a removable insole, so that they can accommodate an orthotic insole. If you have very flat feet I expect that you could do with proper support for your arches, and can pick the insoles up cheaply, with Orthaheel and Sorbothane being good choices. As for the toning shoes, I would recommend Ryn toning shoes but they do not come cheap. If you have flat feet, you may tend to over pronate and Ryn toning shoes are probably the best choice because of that. The Shape Ups SRR has a degree of pronation control, however I would not recommend running in them in your case, just walking. ToneUps boots should be OK.

Sara on April 30, 2011:

Hi, I am interested in a pair of toning shoes/boots. I have very flat feet and will use the shoes mostly for walking. Which do you recommend? Also, would you recommend the sketcher tone-up rhythm method boot for my foot type?

michifus (author) on April 23, 2011:

Hi Elf, Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the runtone, Just personal preference. I would go with the resistance runner between the two as the shoe which will give you more muscle activation.

Elf6171 on April 23, 2011:

I was just wondering which would be a better choice, the skechers resistance runners or the reebok easytone/ runtone! I'm very active, and also work in retail so I'm constantly On my feet. Let me know what you think, thanks!

michifus (author) on April 19, 2011:

Thanks for the feedback Cheryl! I must say, Ive not heard of Cheeks - cool name - will have to investigate!

Cheryl on April 19, 2011:

Thank you so much for this site. It is very informative. I'll add my comment for what it's worth. I have tried a couple of the shoes listed in this site and one that isn't. Last spring I bought FitFlops. They seemed expensive for flip flops, $50. I wore them all summer and am wearing them still. I guess the price per wear makes them a bargain. They are very comfortable. I can't say absolutely that they have toned me anywhere, but, nothing has slid any further south either. ;)

I also have worn Earth shoes. I had some in the '70's and I have a new pair. They are much cuter now. I also have Cheeks sandals by Tony Little, the "you can do it" guy. They are a 3 degree incline shoe kind of like the Earth shoe.

To sum up, all of the toning shoes I've tried are very comfortable and well made. I don't feel I'm any worse for the wear for trying them. I will continue to wear the ones that I already have, and look forward to hearing from anyone who has found the "miracle" shoe.

Thanks and happy toning!

Hi Katy - Yeah Dr. Scholls toning shoes are good - they started it all in 1959 with their wooden soled toning sandals. Good value, and great for your feet!

Love the wide variety of shoes you have covered here. Anything to say about Dr Scholls?

michifus (author) on March 04, 2011:

Thanks Fonte - I have mentioned this in this toning shoes hub, and I have written a separate hub about it. For an institution such as ACE to release this superficially scientific study, belies belief. They claim that toning shoes research by the manufacturers was not submitted to peer review and publication in scientific journals. What did they do with their report? hired an internet writer to release it without peer review. Why? because scientifically their report doesn't stand up. The study was devised to discredit toning shoes, pure and simple, to further their own aims. They have a vested interest in toning shoes not working. They countered 6 week and 8 month toning shoes case studies (longer with MBT) with a 5 minute test on a treadmill, with a tiny sample size, and fit, active and toned young girls, those least likely to benefit from toning shoes. The report answers no questions, and is sensationalist journalism with a smattering of science to add credibility, to further their own aims. As for the other manufacturers, many have independent accreditation from the likes of the APMA, Fitflop have independent studies backing up their claims too. Its a shame the report wasn't more comprehensive.

Fonte on March 03, 2011:

A 2010 University of Wisconsin study commissioned by the American Council on Exercise compared exercise wearing rocker bottom shoes and regular running shoes. The study found there was no fitness benefit to wearing rocker sole shoes. The study was cited in a 2011 class-action lawsuits alleging false advertising by New Balance, Reebok, and other manufacturers

I take it you are not Kim Kardashian then?. You can get earth tones with Skechers Shape Ups toning shoes, have a look at the XW range. And there's always Earth tone Earth toning shoes! OK, so Earth are not out and out toners, more wellness footwear, but they still improve muscle activity. :)

Kim on February 24, 2011:

Is it a must that all tone-up type shoes have to be so flashy? It would be nice to see earth tones!

michifus (author) on February 01, 2011:

The thing about New Balance is that they are comfortable and look good, although you're right, from the feedback they are not the best when it comes to toning. I think Skechers Shape Ups are a good all round choice,- the originals that is, or the Skechers Resistance Runner if you plan on jogging.

Emily on February 01, 2011:

So I am looking into getting a toning shoe as I need to loose a far bit of weight before getting married in June. I see that the New Balance seem to have some of the best ratings on the page but I see little pros in all the feed back... Are they as good as there ratings? I walk often and go to the gym but want something low profile with the most benefits, any ideas?

Thank you

michifus (author) on January 29, 2011:

No problem - FF supertone are really low profile, New Balance true balance too. They are probably your best bet.

pjcofer127 on January 29, 2011:

Thanks a bunch, Michifus...and yes, I do wear sneakers to work, so this info helps me out! I just don't like the "frankenstein" type looking shoes, you know?

pjcofer127 on January 28, 2011:

Hello...lots of great information here, but I'm a little overwhelmed by it all! Interrested in a pair of toning shoes, but not clear on which ones are best suited for my needs. I work retail, so I'm on my feet all day, every day. No major posture disorders, recoveries, etc., just looking for a way to tone up while already doing what I'm doing: walking all day! Any ideas? I like the looks of the New Balance, Ryka, and Reebok (Skechers feel juvenile to me at 39, and I don't like their overtly "chunky" sole)...any suggestions?

michifus (author) on January 18, 2011:

Hi Robyn, I think toning shoes could be beneficial. I would have thought that a rocker soled shoe would be better, so not really new balance. More Shape ups or MBT. HOWEVER.... since you have had surgery, I would advise that you to speak to your physician about it before buying.

Robyn on January 16, 2011:

Would New Balance True Balance be good for the knee and reliant leg muscles post ACL Reconstruction, I have had a lot of thigh muscle lost and calf/hamstring muscle tightness.

michifus (author) on January 05, 2011:

Hi Sara - I am updating the hub on Avia toning shoes to include all of the new models, however in answer to the question....

The I-tone and the I-shape are essentially the same shoe in terms of technology, although the i-tone is much lighter, and has a lot more mesh to maximise the escape of moisture and hot air.

I suppose you could call the i-tone the warm weather version of the i-shape.

The main difference between the i-shape/i-tone and the iburn is the outsole design. The i-shape/i-tone has more flexibility in the forefoot, whereas both the i-quest and i-burn have a more rigid shank running the length of the shoes.

Basically this gives the iburn and the iquest better support, and helps to generate more muscle activation on the push off from the toes. These models use what is called the leaf spring double rocker sole, rather than the plain old archrocker.

The itone and ishape have a more natural feel to improve flexing of the feet.

Sara on January 05, 2011:

What are the different features and benefits between the Avia iTone and iBurn?

michifus (author) on December 30, 2010:

Hi Karin - Its unusual, as FitFlop are thought to be some of the most comfortable toe post sandals you can buy, and most find them comfortable straight out of the box.

The most common problem that occurs with Fitflop sandals is due to them being the wrong size. The sizing is based on a UK standard foot, and the sizing can vary depending on your foot shape. Have a look at the above link for sizing, and check to see if you have the right size - if not, maybe you can exchange them?

Karin on December 28, 2010:

Hi there, I bought a pair of fitflop toning sandals, however, they hurt and I got blisters on my feet!

Any ideas, what should I do? They cost $100.00 (Australian dollar) so I would like to wear them, they seem to be comfortable and effective otherwise, but no use in wearing them if all I get is blisters...

Amy on November 27, 2010:

I got the Reebok Eary Tones 2 months ago and I already have to get new show , I will not get Reebok again , I was thinking about New Balance True Balance

michifus (author) on September 17, 2010:

Hi Hollie,

Thanks for getting in touch. Yes, for cross training, toning shoes are a good choice, however you need to choose carefully, as not all provide the stability for higher impact working out.

Have a look at this hub for details - I think the best bet will be Skechers Shape Ups SRT, (Radius Trainer). It has a lower profile design that the original Shape Ups, and it is designed for cross training, and is fine on a treadmill.

If they are a little too expensive, the Shape Ups XF and XT would also be a good choice.

Hollie on September 17, 2010:

Do you have any suggestions on which toning sneaker would work best for cross-training? I don't do a lot of walking but primarily jog on a treadmill or do aerobic weight training and plyometrics for my workout. Would toning trainers be appropriate for these activities and if so which would you recommend?

michifus (author) on September 14, 2010:

As for Therashoes and Fila Sculpt and Tone - If they would like to send me a free pair, I would be more than happy to put them to the test.

The shoes are well priced, however so are Avia toning shoes at the moment through Amazon, and I would go for those.

As for toning sandals, Amazon is currently offering incredible deals on the big name brands from for under $20,00 a pair. At that price its worth getting next years toning sandals a bit early!

dbm5 on September 01, 2010:

What about therashoes? are they good?

Besides than being cheap.

michifus (author) on August 20, 2010:

Thanks for the comments guys & gals.....

In no particular order......

I have not personally tried Tonewalker shoes, and am not a huge fan of the styling it has to be said. They appear to me to be the most blatant case of jumping on the toning shoes bandwagon, with the company set up, it would appear, solely to cash in on the current trend.

Having said that, they do have the features to suggest they could work well. They put you back on your heels, correct the posture to some degree and make the feet work harder. However at a price higher than Skechers Tone Ups and FitFlop sandals, I personally, would go for one of those two instead.

After all, they do actually look good and are fashionable casual summer sandals in their own right, and have studies independently backing up their claims.

If anyone has tried tonewalker sandals, or indeed other sandals and has found they work / don't work please let me, and anyone reading this page know the most effective models on the market!

As Julie points out (thanks Julie) one of the greatest benefits of rocker sole toning shoes (rounded sole) and also of FitFlop, is that they are exceptionally good for anyone suffering with joint or back problems.

The shoes not only provide exceptional cushioning with all that EVA foam, but they also correct the posture. FitFlop, Skechers, MBT and Chung Shi shoes have all been flooded with praise for the pain relief provided by the shoes, helping sufferers of osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, plantar fasciitis, chronic back pain, bunions, hammertoes, sciatica, Multiple sclerosis, Morton's Neuroma and even Restless leg syndrome. They help by easing the pressure and forces acting on the joints. By correcting the posture, they actually help to prevent many conditions from developing.

However, as is often the case, buying cheap often means spending more in the long run.

Julie on August 18, 2010:

I have a pair of the shape up knock offs from target. They were amazing at first but lack of quality is really apparent. After about a month they wore out and don't provide support. I will be getting some different ones soon, but for $30 it was worth the relief (I have had back surgery for a ruptured disc, and when my back acts up they are incredible)but also worth investing in something better.

Sue on August 13, 2010:

I've just bought a pair of Tonewalker trainers from Big W $48, do you have any comments re these?

Liz on August 02, 2010:

I have no idea how well they work as far as toning as I just purchased mine today and walked for the first time in them. They feel a bit "odd" but seemed to perform well for my slightly over three miles and my ankles and knee didn't hurt after using them like my old shoes. I guess in time I'll know for sure but for today they seem like an A+++. I spent only $30 on mine and they were Dr. School Gaia's I got at Walmart with the rocker bottoms.

michifus (author) on August 01, 2010:

I will be adding Champion toning shoes and Curves by Avon shortly, please check back in a few days Dave.

Thanks Joanne - I will update the MBT line shortly, they have loads of sandals now, you are right. Stylish? well, depends on the model and your taste. Agreed, they are not the most fashionable sandals out there, that's true, but both MBT and Chung Shi do now make sandals which are more rugged, with Chung Shi producing hiking sandals with the same benefits. MBT also produce a similar model.

Have a look at my toning sandals hub,for more detail on toning sandals for the summer.

Joanne on July 24, 2010:

A clarification is needed on the MBT line. They most certainly do have sandals; I've got 2 pairs of them. Stylish? No. Comfortable? Yes.
