Despite the blood and the nudity, the costumes in HBOs’ Game of Thrones are all stunning, well-crafted and memorable.
This page is a list of the Top Ten Best costumes for the females character from the second season of Game of Thrones. The costumes were ranked on aesthetics (beauty), how the costume reflects the character and of course memorability.
For some of the characters, they wear the same costumes from season one, so if a costume is on the season one list it won’t appear here. This mainly affects Cersei, Sansa and to a slight degree Daenerys.
Costumes were design by Michele Clapton
Melisandre, The Red Witch
The Red Priestess, Melisandre always wears red to show her affinity for the Red God, R’hllor. She wears this costume when her and Stannis Baratheon meet with Stannis‘ younger brother Renly.
Despite the simplicity of Melisandre’s costume it’s very powerful and iconic to her character. The dress also has a very cool seam under the bust line that gives this seemingly basic costume a unique edge. She also wears a robe with a rough texture. There is also a component that has some pin-tuck details.
Her look is finished off with her signature ruby choker.
Shae's Pink Handmaid Dress
Shae wears this costume throughout all of season two. It has the same flowing drape cut that Daenerys wore very briefly in season one though it is a bit different.
This costume looks like it’s made from a taupish pinkish cotton. It has the same drawstring halter neckline of Daenerys’ costume. Unlike Daenerys’ costume, Shae’s version has a belt with floral details, and brown panel down the front that has a stripe-like design on it.
Sansa's Blackwater Gown
During the second season Sansa is still engaged to King Joffery but due to her father’s execution and brother’ rebellion, she is trying to lay low in Court. She wears a lot of the same costumes she wore in season one.
During the final episode and the during the battle of the Blackwater in episode 9, Sansa wears this dark grayish gown that is in the King’s Landing style but has a touch of her Northern roots. It has a rich pattern that is matches the gray tone. She also wear her silver belt which she wore with her blue gown.
Daenerys at the House of the Undying
Daenerys wears this costume a few times in Qarth but she wears it most memorability during her visit to the House of the Undying.
This costume is very similar to another costume she wears but this one is a bit more casual. It features a high necked patchwork leather armor piece with a light purple tunic that looks like it made from a satin and rough pants that echo her Khaleesi attire.
She looks both powerful and feminine.
Margaery Structural Cone Gown
This is one of the most interesting costumes in the whole show. You can't deny that don't remember this costume.
It has a sculptural quality that makes it a fascinating costume. It’s made of a patterned blue and brown fabric that have a pointed neckline with detached blue sleeves and gold beaded appliqués.
It’s the kind of costume that you could imagine an evil fantasy queen wearing and even though Margaery Tyrell is not an evil queen she does pull off this very intriguing costumes, that shows a desire for power.
Clapton said of this gown that is was Margaery trying to discover her style and thus she is experimenting. This gown looks a lot like a gown by Alexander McQueen that Bjork wore in the "Who is it" music video.
Cersei, Bird Embroidery Blue Gown
This lovely robin’s eggs color costume of Cersei’s in not a season two exclusive, she wore it in season one but it really stands out in season two when she wore it to bid farewell to her daughter, Myrcella and during the mob riot afterwards.
It’s in the standard King’s Landing style and is a really lovely color but the point of interest is the exquisite embroidery work on this costume. All the the embroidery work on the costume and in Game of Thrones is gorgeous but this costume showcased a great example with the birds.
Margaery Throne & Tourney Tie
This one is a tie as these two costumes are very similar to each other that picking one over the other was just silly.
Both costumes have a similar cut and color. The one big difference is that during the Tourney when Catelyn first appears at Renly’s camp, Margaery is wearing a cape. The cape is very sculptural and falls over the shoulders.
Another difference is that the lining around the plunging neckline on the version with the cape is green and the one she wears during the finale in the throne room is brown and extends down further. Also the pattern and fabric on the bodice is quite different.
Both costumes focus on Margery’s cool-headed determination all while being alluring and powerful.
Daenerys Qarth gold collar
This costume is very much like the one Daenerys wears when she visits the house of the Undying but it’s more formal.
It’s her signature blue color with an ornate filagree-like gold armor collar. The idea of a decorative non-functional armor piece is lovely and communicates her beauty and power.
The tunic is a light blue with a very subtle gold pattern and tan pants. She wears this during her infamous “where are my Dragons” scene.
Cersei Red Gown/Blackwater
This costumes of Cersei’s is two in one, she wears this red King’s Landing style gown a few times in Season two.
She wears it with a leather belt which is gives the impression of armor but she also wears during the Battle of the Blackwater with a golden breast plate.
This costume with the armor really captures Cersei perfectly. It shows her house’s colors and her ferocity.
It could not be more ideal for her character. It also has lovely golden embroidery on the bodice and on the sleeves.
Daenerys Qarth Gown
There was never any question that this gown that Daenerys wears in Qarth would not be number one on this list. Sometimes the number one pick is very easy.
It is amazingly beautiful, interesting and it suits Daeneyrs perfectly.
It is in a Qarth style with the golden filagree belt and shoulder details. It's her blue color with a gold pattern to it and a cape extending off the shoulders.
She just looks so regal and majestic in it but still vulnerable. There is just no denying this gown.
