What Does It Mean to Dress Conservative?

Have you been thinking of changing your wardrobe from short to long lengths, fitting to a bit loose style, and deep necklines to round collars? Then you'll be among the many fashion-savvy women who have shifted their interest from hippy to something conservative. Not for anything else but for total comfort and style without stepping out of fashion.

So, let's answer the question.

What Does It Mean to Dress Conservative?

1) It Means Longer Sleeves and Hemlines

They say that longer dresses are modest. Well, what looks modest and what isn't may raise different opinions depending on one's own individuality. But as far as modesty goes, wearing a longer dress is dressing conservatively.

Some clothes come with stylish tops that have gone with very low necklines and too short hemlines. If men have been going backward with the masculine rules that it's inappropriate for them to wear short shorts, they found it hard to understand how it has become appropriate for women to wear the same.

2) It Shows Less Skin

Dressing conservatively adjusts clothing in a way that eliminates unwanted exposure of the midriff, belly button and lower back. It avoids excessive display of the chest area. Although it is considered fashionable nowadays to show much skin on the midriff, showing off too much flesh is not considered conservative.

Men find women who don't dress up too provocative as charming and irresistible that they'll do everything to connect. You probably know of guys who say more skin is attractive yet they find it unattractive for their girlfriends or wives to wear revealing attires. This plainly comes down to one thing - men in general still prefer conservative looks.

3) It is Relaxed and Loosed

For someone who wishes to look conservative, ensembles that are not too body-hugging yet offers a great silhouette are perfect. One can always wear something close to the skin but not tight to look like choking the body. There are many form-fitting apparels that are becoming and modest.

A relaxed dress code offers the ability to think clearly. This is because girls who are not stressed with the clothes they wear feel happier and more comfortable. Layers that flow naturally covering the back and shoulders are a great way to stay reserved yet trendy no matter the occasion.

4) It is Appropriately Dressed

To dress appropriately means dressing with sense so as to feel accepted. In short, it aligns an outfit to match the place, event, and people. Where are you going and how do you want to feel in your certain outfit?

For example, too-short hemlines and plunging necklines don't fit in workplaces. Coming in such fashion is not welcome. At some point, it hurts but this is a code of conduct when it comes to business settings.

One way or another, your appearance has an impact on how successful you are in the modern workplace. It pays to understand what's appropriate in your industry and the safest is to dress classically.

5) It Provides Balance

To dress conservative does not necessarily mean to dress up backward or out of mode. In terms of style, balancing connotes being fashionable but not overly sexy. While being modest calls for all details in a certain decorum, one can look trendy without having to portray revealing attires.

Let this golden rule set the balance:

If you wear a dress or skirt that's a little above the knee, choose a conservative top, or something with sleeves. If you wear a halter top or a backless, then pick a bottom that falls an inch below the knee or wear jeans.

If you're a young woman, don't worry if you're not getting attention by dressing reservedly. Thinking beautiful with what you wear will make you feel good, and it's a lot better to be liked with your modest charm and sweet looks.

In Essence...

Conservative outfits offer a comfortable way of dressing that sets an excellent example for the younger generation. Regardless of the occasion, you don't worry because your outfit is acceptable. Knowing that everything falls in the right places allows you to move, bend, twist, and more!

It pays to be a role model and teach other girls how to dress with grace and elegance. Not just that, you can shine more by wearing something that's fashionably in yet modestly stylish. Now do you know what is it about dressing conservative that can even make you super gorgeous?

That sexy attitude! :)

I don''t think self respect comes from how much skin you show or don't.

Jakeopolis on February 21, 2014:

Well said sir. There is nothing controlling about mentioning to a woman (if she respects you) to cover herself up a little bit. Less is more and I loved this article.

Dear Tonipet

Thank you so much for writing this. I'm a young man and I grew up in a booming city where it was common for women to wear such clothing. Throughout my teenage years, my male friends and I used to look at women dressed in revealing clothes and enjoy the sight for sexual reasons. I grew up thinking this was acceptable.

When I was around 19, I realized how wrong I was and that women can be beautiful human beings aside from the physicality of things. When I realized this, I worked consciously to eradicate my habit of thinking of women sexually or as sexual objects. I'm proud to say that I did overcome this problem but with great difficulty. I had to adopt strict discipline to control myself. This was to the point that I had to control my eyes and my thoughts in public. It was really difficult.

But even after I successfully overcame this habit, I still found it hard to be a man and to go through life without thinking of women sexually all the time- mainly because everywhere I went women were mostly dressed so revealingly. How I wished women (in general) covered more of their skin so that I could carry on being a good man without so much difficulty.

So yes, women should dress modestly to maintain their own dignity and to show beauty that isn't in their physicality. But women should also dress modestly to help men respect women.

I have tried many times to talk to my female friends (who sometimes dress revealingly) about this but I have always gotten negative responses such as I'm being "too controlling" or that I should "get over it". I don't think I am. I'm just trying to be a better man and need the help of women to do so.

Anyway, thank you so much for writing this. It really means a lot for me that a woman feels this way.

Hello Lakeshya burks. You're right, when young girls turn into young ladies and they do things better, especially in what they wear, they are leading by examples. Beauty starts in the mind. Thank you for reading my hub and for the comment. I wish you a lovely day. :=)-Tonette

i do think it is better because young girls are grown but they should at lease try to do things better or different from what they wear .....

Thank you Express10. There is nothing better than knowing how to dress appropriately. Like you said, it makes bending over or stooping down to pick something up so difficult when in fact, clothing can actually be worn lot convenient and better in the right places. Sometimes, thinking twice helps A LOT :=)Thank you so much for leaving a very insightful comment. Cheers! -Tonette

I agree wholeheartedly. I see girls and grown women wearing the equivalent of tee shirts yet, they call them dresses. These things barely cover their buttocks and breasts. GOD help them if they want to sneeze or need to bend over or stoop down to pick something up.

Hello 2patricias. With the so modern fashion today, it's hightime we take back the pride for elegant dressing by the proper decorum, and to be prude is I think the perfect attitude to begin with. Thank you for stopping. I too enjoyed learning how to read some basic Italian words, thanks to you. Glad to meet you two here.

There is far too much flesh on display. It's not that I am a prude, but I am a fan of elegance.

Tonette Fornillos (author) from The City of Generals on April 25, 2012:

Nonna, thank you very much. I'm with you that a lot of men may not agree but I am sure they like to be a bit intrigued. Perhaps just the mystical sense of appropriate dressing. I salute your strong dedication to service and how I would love to be inspired too, I'd sure would be stopping at your Nonna's House of Productions.

I'm excited for fresh things and ideas for my sleeping organization. Thank you again Dee or Nonna:=), you're wonderful. Keep up!

I do agree and think this is true. I think men might not agree but I also think they are a little intrigued by a woman who is a little mysterious in the way she dress, speak, act, etc. Good hub.
