Demonstrating the location of the philtrum

Philtrum? For those of you not familiar with this part of the human anatomy, it's that groove just above your upper lip and just below your nose situated between your nostrils.

The word philtrum is from the Greek word philtron from philein, which means "to love; to kiss". Very fitting, huh?

Philtrum Folklore

According to folklore, God sends an angel to a woman's womb so that the angel can teach the baby all of the wisdom of the world. Then the angel presses it's finger (leaving an indention) to the baby's mouth to shush the baby from telling the secrets. There is a reference to this in the Christopher Walken movie, The Prophecy.

My Fascination With Philtrums Begins

I have been attracted to men with well-defined philtrums long before I knew what they were called. I know I'm not alone on this one. Many have just not been able to put their finger on it. And those that have, didn't know it had a name.

Looking back, as I try to analyze where it started for me, I find that my earliest recollection of noticing a man's philtrum was when I was a very young girl, maybe 5-6 years old. My dad had a friend that would sometimes visit us and there was just something about him that I liked. However, it wasn't until I was in my late twenties that I figured it out when I ran into him again. He was now a much older man. Age hadn't been too kind to him, but his philtrum was as chiseled as ever.

In my teens, I thought Harry Wayne Casey of the 70s rock group K.C. and the Sunshine Band was the hottest man alive. You'll remember him from such mega hits as "Shake, Shake, Shake (Your Booty)" and "(Do A Little Dance, Make a Little Love) Get Down Tonight". My personal favorite was always "Boogie Shoes" from the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack. It was his philtrum that caught my attention. He had some other fine features as well as you can tell by the photo, but I could sit and stare at his philtrum for hours.

I think the philtrum is the sexiest part of a man because It helps define the lips. To me, it's what makes the lips poised for action. *sigh* It's what makes the lips so kissable and it mesmerizes me to watch them speak or sing.

I've tried to assemble a few samples of men I think are fairly good examples of sexy men with nice philtrums.

For all those men commenters out there upset about their lack of a philtrum -- don't be downhearted. Christopher Pennock of Dark Shadows (the 60s gothic soap opera) had basically no philtrum and he had a huge following (I appreciate that's a weirdly old reference, but he was the first actor I could think of with a very under-defined philtrum who girls went wild for). Everyone is different and has different preferences, so don't worry about it. :)

Very interesting- I think you are on to something here! My first celebrity crush was on Mark Hamill and I realize now that he has a very nice philtrum (in addition to his adorable cleft chin and amazing blue eyes: https://i.pinimg.com/736x/10/85/5d/10855dc348d0a26... I also loved Harry "KC" Casey, and found his very prominent adam's apple and jawline to be very sexy, as well.

Roro on July 13, 2018:

I am with you on this one! I too find a clear philtrum very attractive. I am currently in love with a man with a deep philtrum and every time I see him, it gives me butterflies and I can hardly resist touching it. He maybe very surprised to learn that that is what makes him the sexiest for me!

joe bob on June 22, 2014:

Never heard of you..until now but came across a picture of philltrums for a very different reason. A lack of this defining feature is because of fetal alcohol syndrome..mothers that drank during pregnancy which is very much on the rise. Especially in england where its the worst.

Btw I have always..liked this aspect of mouths. As an avowed bi sexual that is married for years I can gladly report that my wife and I both love it in people and both have a clearly defined set . And she knows I love to see it in men. Did I say Jim Morrison?

dont forget michael easton and keifer sutherland! mmmm

KRC (author) from Central Texas on November 12, 2012:

Michael, the philtrum may not be the thing that ALL girls are attracted to. You will have your own strengths that girls will be attracted to. Confidence is one of them. Hold your head high. You never know, you might have a secret admirer who is watching you hoping you'll notice them.

michael on November 10, 2012:

I feel so ugly and useless now. I think that's the secret to winning a girl, now apparently decreased my chances.

obrey on April 27, 2012:

we really need to know anatomy to enjoy the relations and understand our emotions

KRC (author) from Central Texas on January 20, 2012:

Awwwww......it's one of the things that make you, you. Go to Google images and look for people you admire that have a philtrum similar to yours.

ugly piece of shit on January 20, 2012:

I have the longest, flattest, ugliest philtrum in the world. I HATE it. It's one of the things that makes me wanna kill myself :(

KRC (author) from Central Texas on September 23, 2011:

Thanks for stopping by Mamooshka and Eliee!

I've been meaning to write a similar article on women with nice philtrums. I might have to do that...thanks for the reminder.

Eliee on September 23, 2011:

Interesting!

Since I was a little kid, I've always noticed the philtrum on people and I was certainly attracted to nicely shaped, prominent ones. My philtrum is extremely similar to the one of Angelina Jolies. I'm glad to possess this nice feature :)

Mamooshka on May 23, 2011:

Wow, KC is da bomb! What a philtrum!

KRC (author) from Central Texas on November 23, 2010:

That's very interesting Joflor! Thank you for sharing!

joflor on November 23, 2010:

hi,

I recently found out that according to the ancient art of face reading, the philtrum can tell you how much a person is into sex, so if you see one of those people with a chiseled, accentuated philtrum it means they like sex a lot! (for ex. taylor swift for which face reader rose rosetree did a face reading on I believe)

so it's no coincidence you find that part of someone's face in particular sexy, esp. when it's very accentuated. I think it's because you(we) instinctively feel what this ancient art of face reading tells us, that this person is very much into sex and therefore is sexy to us!

I also like to accentuate the philtrum in my art when I draw/paint faces, it seems something that a lot of artists would leave out when making a non-realistic drawing of a face where much detail is left out, but I always like to include it. :)

KRC (author) from Central Texas on July 25, 2010:

Hi baz! No, you're not alone. Glad I could lighten up your day! I've been meaning to write a female philtrum hub. Thanks for the reminder! :)

baz on July 25, 2010:

It's kind of funny, stumbling onto this page. Every so often I meander on the web following philtrum links. Used to think I was alone... I, too, have had a *philtrum fetish* for as long as I know... I'm a guy. I'm also a nose fan... so when a woman has *a nose* & *a philtrum*, I'm toast ;) Thanks for lightening up my day...

KRC (author) from Central Texas on April 29, 2010:

Thanks Jayne! I bet you start looking at them more now. :)

I remember years ago, we had a TV news anchor that seemed to have no philtrum. That area was flat and unusually long. He looked so odd to me for that reason.

Jayne Lancer from West London, UK on April 29, 2010:

I've never really acknowledged the Philtrum as a 'turn-on', although my husband does have a very good one. Mine isn't bad, either :)

In make-up, we emphasize it if the space between the nose and mouth is too short.

Entertaining Hub!

KRC (author) from Central Texas on April 27, 2010:

Good point, Kamensan. Obviously, being a woman, I approached this from a female standpoint, but you're right, I'm sure there are plenty of men who are attracted to certain women for the same reason. I may even do a hub on women with prominent philtrums. :)

Kamensan on April 27, 2010:

I'm glad to know I'm not alone. I'm a man who long had a hard time putting my finger on what it was about some women's faces that made them more attractive than others, then a friend of mine told me about the Philtrum (which I thought was spelled with an 'F' till I looked it up online). Now I can't stop obsessing about Philtrum prominence, though at least now I know what it is, and that there are others who feel the same.

KRC (author) from Central Texas on March 16, 2009:

I can understand the the heavy eyelid attraction. There's a sultry bedroom look to them. :)

I'm glad I reminded you of something you want to write about!

I had a teacher tell me she found men's collar bones to be particularly attractive. I had never heard of that. It's funny what floats our boats.

Eldritch Elegy on March 16, 2009:

Awesome.

My mom told me that angel story a long time ago... it's tingling in my brain to write a short story about it, thanks for the reminder.

As for weird things that attract us, I myself like a guy with heavy eyelids, like Cillian Murphy. I couldn't say why.

KRC (author) from Central Texas on March 16, 2009:

You're welcome, Harlem6!  Thanks for stopping by!

Harlem6 from Worcester, MA on March 16, 2009:

I always thought it was a weird part of the face and never knew why it was there. Kind of like how it's weird that men have nipples though we don't use them. Thanks for the name, good thing to know. Thanks!

KRC (author) from Central Texas on March 15, 2009:

Well, I'm certainly glad you mustered the courage to stop by and read it, PM!  I enjoyed the angel story as well, I hadn't heard that until I was conducting a little research about the philtrum to try to add a little meat to my hub besides me just going ga-ga over guys with nice ones.

Yeah, KC certainly left little to the imagination for that particular concert.  I doubt they could pay him enough to wear a similar outfit today.  He had gained a considerable amount of weight at one point.  Although, some recent pictures I've seen, he seems to have slimmed down some.

Ha ha, the facial hair thing!  Yeah, women with facial hair are a bit of a turn-off.

Proud Mom from USA on March 15, 2009:

Do you realize how much bravery I had to muster to click on this hub to see EXACTLY what a philtrum is? The relief that washed over me!!

I love the story of the angel.

I'm with Mindfield on the KC pic! My eyes!! Please, someone, call 911!!!!!!!!!!!

Very interesting, KCC. And I'm glad the facial hair thing is limited to men for you!!

KRC (author) from Central Texas on March 15, 2009:

Thanks for stopping by Mindfield!  Yes, KC does have a bit more going on in that pic than just his philtrum!

MindField from Portland, Oregon on March 15, 2009:

I was a little afraid to check this out, KCC - wasn't at all sure what part of the male anatomy we were talking about. And after looking at that photo of KC, I'm still not sure! ;-)

KRC (author) from Central Texas on February 14, 2009:

I have to admit (at the risk of sounding bi-sexual) I do find it sexy on women as well. LOL It's just a defining feature that I notice and appreciate. I'm glad you and your hubby have that!

I'm a sucker for facial hair as well....but I limit that to men. LOL

Rochelle Frank from California Gold Country on February 14, 2009:

Hummm-- I never knew about all that, but my hubby has a very defined philtrum-- so much so , that for much of his life he wore a moustache because it was hard to shave there without nicking himself.

I, also have the trait to a degree.. but no moustache, yet.

KRC (author) from Central Texas on February 08, 2009:

oooooooooooooooh yeah! LOL Thanks for stopping by Kari.

Kari Poulsen from Ohio on February 08, 2009:

The philtrum,, huh? LOL
