cute short curly hairstyles for women

Curly Hair is completely different from straight hair. Its structure is different and its needs are different. Like short hair styles of any other type, short curly hair styles make a statement. Maintaining Curly hair demands a different approach. It begs for understanding.

And it's not for reasons of fashion alone that that you need to look at curly hair in a different light. There are just two ingredients you need to ensure at the very outset - the right hair cut, and the type of care that your curly hair really, really needs to retain its style.

Curly hair styles that look wonderful are the natural result of combining those two essential ingredients - the curly hair cut, and the curly hair care.

Curly Hair needs moisture! Lots of moisture! That's because hair that's curly stands away from your scalp, and misses out on all the natural oils your hair follicles produce.Curly hair is more susceptible to frizz.

Curly short hair styles are sexy and cute.Curly short hair styles signal a confident woman. They give her sex appeal, too, if they suit her.Curly hair short styles can look gorgeous or they can look horrible. In both cases, the reason is face shape.

But happily most people will choose to work with the face they have. That's where hair styles come in, after all. A woman's hair is more than a mere accessory as its essential to her to look beautiful.

To look its best, curly hair needs vitamins, proteins, minerals, all the elements you receive from a healthy, balanced diet.If you treat it well, giving it the few basic things it needs and leaving it free to develop its own style, your hair, curly and grateful, will give you the happiest, healthiest hair you could ever wish.

The best way of keeping hair frizz down is a light spirit of light hair spray, and when it gets dry, run your fingers through it. Not only does the hair spray hold nice zigzag parts, but it also cozies the frizzes to stay down.

Also, curls can get out of control easily. It is important to use the right curly hair products to control these two problems.Rather than fighting with your curly hair, learn how to work with it to make yourself beautiful.

I have thick natural curly hair and it is very frizzy and it is hard to get it under control every day.

I have curly hair and I love it. I've had an inverted bob cut. It is now SO EASY to look after. I don't use special products, just shampoos and conditioners for dry, damaged hair. Most days my hair looks great even when I wake up, but if it doesn't, I just wet my hands and scrunch my curls abit. Wouldn't change my hair for anything!

Trust me, you DO NOT wish you had naturally curly hair, because it is TERRIBLE to deal with. You really have no idea how much time it takes to fix correctly.

alice courtney on October 23, 2011:

Hi!It's really frustrating... I have mixed types of hair: Kinky, wavy, straight= puffy. I hate it! I can't seem to find the PERFECT haircut for me. At the sides it's kinky. the middle is wavy combined with a little curly then at the back (it's hidden) it's straight. My mom says I still have a chance of making the kinky parts plus curly parts wavy, or straight. My aunt says to just texturize it. I don't really want it rebonded... I have to find a haircut before NEW YEAR!!! >:(

I have short curly hair (Right at my chin) and none of these oictures show "short" curly hair. And also A LOT of people come up to me saying I am lucky for my hair but it is SO HARD to take care of it and to keep it non-frizzy! I just need some cute new hairstyles for my type of hair!

Marcella on November 24, 2010:

im 11 and i have chin length curly/poofy hair. curly hair is so unpredictable and no amount of any kind of product (it seems) will change that! im a blonde but i cant figure out how to get my hair not all stiff b/c then it gets all flat and not curly! i use moose and rusk (anti frizz) and curl shaper hair spray but i cant figure out wich one is causing the stiff curls!!!!ugh!!

i luv my curly hair, though, i just straighten it for school and stuff.

Julia on November 16, 2010:

I have THE WORST hair in the universe, but i don't want to straighten it every day. it is medium and wavy and AWFUl!! Any ideas for a cute haircut that won't involve too much prep?

curly sue on November 06, 2010:

I am 41 and have learned to love my curls. Best beauty tip I can offer is STOP USING SHAMPOO!! Shampoo contains harsh detergents which strip curly hair of its natural oils. Clean your hair with conditioner only and if you have product build up try using baking soda followed by conditioner. I use Alba conditioner as a leave in followed by Tresemme gel for curly hair because it is 100% alcohol free. Air dry till almost completely dry, then blow dry on low while scrunching, finish with light hair spray.Everyone's curls are different but this is what works for mine---hope it helps someone!

danielle on November 01, 2010:

ii am 14 years old and i have the most untameable hair in the whole universe . it is extremly thinck and very curly. i want a change. ive hada short hair cut for like maybe 2 years now and i want a change it is to my earlobes now but i think i want it to my sholders. but no on nos how hard it is to tame it

CurlyGirl on October 17, 2010:

Hm, I wish you would have showed more pictures of women with naturally curly hair. Hardly even of these women do! Plus you mention cutting curly hair based on face shape, but then you fail to mention what cuts work with what shapes. Disappointed.

TLE on October 12, 2010:

The majority of the pictures in this gallery are sadly not of women with naturally curly hair. I can spot a hot-roller or curling iron 'do a mile off, and that hair does not sit the same way. I suggest you check your facts and get photos of real curly hair. Meg Ryan is a good example.

kaylee on September 05, 2010:

wow thats really pritty and look very nice :)

Louise on August 18, 2010:

I have very thick curly hair in a just above shoulder length bob. I (and my mum) spent the first 35 years of my life fighting with it, then I got to grips with it about 2 years ago. I'd had it past waist length for a couple of years, and that really taught me how to care for it properly. Now, I very rarely have bad hair days. I have good days and "OK" days. The only time it really looks a mess is if I've slept on it 3 nights in a row and not washed it, and I only do that if I know I'm not going anywhere. I use masses of leave in - well, I use my usual intensive conditioner as a leave in - and Tony and Guy funky gum straight after the leave in AND every morning when I get up if I'm not going to wash it. My hair needs lots of product, and it's practically impossible to weigh it down too much. I live in southern Spain where it gets pretty humid, and I don't have any problems with frizz any more.

MB on August 01, 2010:

I had fairly straight fine Karen Carpenter hair as a kid, some odd wave... then after 2 pregnancies in my 30s, it went super curly and THICK. At the hair salon, my stylist, the other stylists, and clients ooo and ahh over my curls. Bottom line, we're never happy with what we have, and I'm lucky I can straighten it (lots of work) and leave it for a few days... but when I go curly in hot, humid Texas summers, my tips are: a good conditioner, comb hair out; 3-4 pumps P Mitchell super skinny serum spread from ends up (less on roots); Fructis gel for curly hair, spread through with finger tips; Scruch with a towel to get the curls going; last: AIR DRY AND LEAVE ALONE! The more I touch and run fingers through, the more frizz. When nearly dry (my thick curls take 3-4 hours), then an upside down head toss with some light scrunching. Yeah, it's a lot more work than you think, but this formula works. I had to get over my quest for THE ONE GREAT PRODUCT--it doesn't exist. By the time I go to bed at night it's looking great! But sleep on it and it's a mess... i can put it up on a clip to get a second (messier looking) day. I so want to go short in the summer and menopausal heat to cut down on drying time (and so i can work out more) but scared that without the weight of below shoulders my curls will do an afro. I agree, these pics are not short.

Karla on August 01, 2010:

My hair all fell out with chemo for breast cancer. It is growing in even more curly then it was when I lost it. I need help with very short styles, not the longer styles you show here. Help.

Brianna on July 21, 2010:

Im 15 and have MAJOR curly hair! I love it on the days that it cooperates, but when it doesn't it looks like i've been sleeping in a cave without washing it for a year. I have always cut my hair short and straighted it for winter, spring, and autumn. And have just let it do it's thing during summer. I want to try to leave it curly as much as I can during next year. Any tips?

Mary on July 21, 2010:

I have very curly hair which is just at my shoulders when wet. I went to a curly hair salon and had one of those "special curly hair cuts". Not too happy with the cut. Maybe just my hair won't cooperate. I use a leave in conditioner, and a climate control gel while it is wet. It helps with the frizz as long as I don't touch it a lot. But with all that product it looks stringy, which I hate. I too would like to have a stylish haircut, but have not found one. If I dry my hair out straight, (which is not actually straight, just less curly), as soon as the humidity hits my hair, it starts the frizz and bushy look. Sometimes I am very tempted to cut it very short, but I know what a disaster that would be. I never brush my hair, but use a wide tooth comb. My hair never tangles either, never has. Straightening it with a flat iron just makes it have flyaways. I too would love for my hair to look like one of the pictures above.

curlyQ on July 13, 2010:

I have had curly hair my whole life--when I was younger it was normal loose curls and now it is a ton of tiny spirals that frizz no matter how much I condition and mousse. The top of my head is also oddly flat and no matter how much I wave it around the volume doesn't reach my roots. I have read in many places that you shouldn't comb or brush curly hair but I know from experience that if I don't my hair will knot to such a degree that I have to cut it all off. What should you really do?

Abby S. on July 11, 2010:

I agree with what a lot of people have said. Not everyone understands how hard it is to maintain natural curly hair. I'm 15 and have major curls. With summer time I feel like I just want to cut it off but I'm to afraid to do so. The pictures above are not what I consider short, and they have been worked on for hours. Curly hair unfortunately doesn't come out that perfect. One thing that works for me is when I take my shower at night after I get out and my hair is towel dried I put in Pantiene moose for curly hair. I then wrap it up into a bun. I sleep with it in and the next morning its a little damp but it air dries beautifully! To loosen the curls out a bit I just do a slow motion up and down head bob. And let it be.

Niamh on July 04, 2010:

My Mom has curly hair and she hates it.But I so want curly hair.Any one hav any tips

Nancy on June 30, 2010:

no idea,

Use hair conditioner after the shampoo. It will loosen and smooth the curls quite a bit and make it much easier to comb out. You can also take spray in conditioner to the pool or waterpark, rinse out the chlorine and spray in the leave in conditioner with or without shampooing first.

Jennie on June 21, 2010:

I like the photos but I have short curly hair which is above the chin. I don't think these photos qualify as short hair. Love my curls but need a new style. I get tired of the same thing all the time. Can you show some super short hair cuts?

I have a toddler with "Shirley Temple" type curly hair. She is 2 and a half. Her sister,6 has straight hair. I have no idea how to tame the beast that is my child's curly hair. Please get me going in the right direction. I have never been able to comb her hair but a few curls worth before she took off. Her sister screams when getting her hair combed so the other almost as soon as the comb touches the scalp she screams because she thinks that is what she is supposed to do. We will be taking on waterparks soon so I need to get ahead of the hair issue. Help, thanks!

Michelle on April 27, 2010:

I have been living with curly hair for 60 years. I didn't appreciate it when I was a teenager in the 60's when everyone had long straight hair. That was before blow driers, flat irons, curling irons etc. to straighten it. Frizz! Don't get me started. Since the 70's I have loved it. The style then was called the 'Shag' which is just layered. It looks good on me and is really easy wash and wear. I would like a NEW STYLE. Forty years, good grief!

The comments most helpful to me have been. " Leave small amount of conditioner in wet hair, finger fluff moving fingers in circles, let air dry."

I have curly hair and i love it(: i used leave in conditioner which is a major MUST HAVE for all people with curly hair(: for a easy stley day i put leave in conditioner when its wet, and then throw all of it up in one big, messy, wet bun. hair spray it like crazy a couple times and take it out before it dries, then hair spray it when its down. gives it volume and its not frizzy(: i also use gel. gelgelgel. hope this helps!

ive got curly hair to, but i want to straight them!!

Jaimie on June 26, 2009:

I wish I had naturally curly hair. But instead I am cursed with thin straight long blonde hair. I curl it a lot, because I hate it straight. My hair holds a curl very well though, If I curl it, so it's like spirals, then take a shower the next day, when I get out, after shampooing and conditioning, it recurls itself, and stays like that if I don't brush it or comb it! Is that supposed to happen, and it's not the same kind of wave or curl that I get if I hadn't curled it before that.

Jen on June 24, 2009:

I have really long curly hair and i've always had a hard time with it. My hair is extremely thick and semi course so i can't do much with it. I used a product by Suave which made my hair look GREAT but they discontinued that product so now i'm back to square one. In the winter i am able to straighten my hair out and it looks really good but can't do that during the summer due to the hummidity. So, i guess i'm going to cut this birds nest off my head soon, hopefully i can find a cute style/cut for it.

re: cute child with short curly hairstyle

don't you mean "little girl made to look like adult"?! totally inappropriate.

Christy on March 27, 2009:

I have super thick and curly hair. It changed to kinky curly when I turned 13 and stayed that way for 8-9 years. Then when I had my kids it turned wavy (wavy to me and curly to everyone else) I used to never get it trimmed because I hated the how they always cut!! I have since found a person that understands my hair and love getting it cut now. I have found that GOOD products are essencial and especially with thick hair getting it thinned out on a regular basis is key. The Paul Mitchel leave in conditioner is great too... Also lots of mostizer cream products work well for me to put the mostier back in my hair. I have straightened my hair too but it just doesn't seem right! I was born with this hair and I am going to work with it!!

Great styles!I have natural curly hair and i'm a hair stylist by trade, and i can tell you that 90% of this hair styles have had ahour or hours spent on them to look the way they do. Naturally curly hair is not that perfect looking! to bad we don't all have our own stylist to make it look so easy or a ghd on hand!!!!

I love the pictures but I consider short hair jaw length or shorter not past the shoulders like most of the pictures here. I'm getting ready to donate my hair to Locks of Love and was looking for short curly hairstyles for very curly hair other than mini afro or poodle wedge. Maybe next time the page is updated you could include some of those styles.

Jessica on August 25, 2008:

I have extremely thick natural curly hair. Some days I love it, others, I would like it to be straight... But I'm happy that I can have the best of both worlds... Only it takes forever to straighten it, and I have to get it thinned every 3 months in order to straighten it or else it's really fluffy and doesn't look right. I'm looking for a hair style that will look good either way. Very difficult to find. If anybody knows of any place to get an idea on how to cut it, message me on myspace if you have one. Thank you!!!

susan on August 23, 2008:

i have curly hair, and i used to hate it but now i love it. i have friends with hair just as curly as mine, but they hate it and straighten it into oblivion. i used to, but two hours is just too long to spend on it.

something i have found that helps with curly hair is just to leave it for normal days. a nice look is with the fron center section bobby-pinned back, and the rest just out.

for going out, add beach cream. it de frizzes and holds like nothing else. it doesn't weigh it down, either. the only problem is, it gets yucky the next morning, so wash it out that night or the next morning .

hey guys, I have curly hair and used to hate it when young, but now I LOVE it!!! A few tricks that I have found helpful: I always use minimum products whilst washing and conditioning my hair else it gets weighed down, I love Paul Mitchell's leave in 'The Conditioner'. Take a small amount, smooth it through and comb hair while wet with a wide toothed comb. I don't touch it after that. When it's air dryed, I put my head down, shake it out and everyone goes ooh and aah ;) hope this helps!

I agree with Masonsmom who say that people just don't understand the difference between curly and straight hair. I like my hair, but wish it was straight. I've tried to straighten my hair but it just doesn't look good at all!! So, I'm stuck with my curls--but I've learned to like them. Alot of people are jealous of my curls--and I don't understand. Even people that know me ask if my hair is naturally curly or permed! It's crazy!

Amanda on June 28, 2008:

None of these women have short hair...hello isn't this supposed to be short cuts...not long hair in curly updos

Shirley Anderson from Ontario, Canada on April 10, 2008:

My profile shows me with my hair straightened, but in reality my hair is very curly and suffers from terminal frizz. People with straight hair do not understand what it's like to try and get the knots out, it's always time consuming and painful, especially around the collar line. Curly hair has a mind of it's own! and is very frustrating on the days that it won't co-operate.

It's hard to find a hairdresser that cuts naturally curly hair well. I have learned that it's best to run from any that ask if my hair is natural or permed - a sure sign that they are going to cut your hair as if it were straight.

Thx for the great hub!

MasonsMom from U.S.A. on April 08, 2008:

I have naturally curly hair and people just don't understand how different it is from straight hair! They always say they wish they had curly hair but I assure them that they would not like it! It just takes so much work and product to keep it looking nice and nonfrizzy that I almost always blow it out straight--which takes FOREVER!

Thanks for promoting the better side of curly hair!

No idea whether what I am saying next is relevant or not.

I am a guy and I like to have my hair short. When it grows long, it starts to curl. One of the reason that I don't like my hair to grow too long is that my face will get oily at the end of the day.

Anyway, great information.
