Beauty contests

There is euphoria in the Pakistan press about the victory of the Taliban in Afghanistan. This is a ominous sign as it signals the Talibanization of Pakistan society. In this murky atmosphere there are Muslim women in Pakistan who however don't subscribe to the government and the rule of the Mullah. Hence 17 years back the organizers started Miss Pakistan contest. This is an outlet for girls from Pakistan to take part in beauty contests. The organizers generally hold the contests in Canada or the USA. The Miss Pakistan contests have been held for the last 17 years and girls who win in these pageants generally also represent Pakistan at the various beauty contests in the world.

This year the organization of Miss Pakistan World announced that Aina Qureishi is Miss World Pakistan 2021. She will represent Pakistan at the international competitions. The announcement was made via Miss Pakistan World’s official social media account and the organization stated that the competition was held virtually due to the pandemic.

Hailing from Rawalpindi, Aina is 23-years-old currently studying at a university in Ankara, Turkey, and is on a short-term school exchange program in Italy pursuing her education in the Bachelor of Education program. She is fluent in Urdu, English, German, Punjabi, Chinese, and a little bit of Turkish.

.The contest generates tremendous interest in Pakistan as well as India.

A Nation at War with itself

Pakistan is a country which is dominated by the Mullah and the gun. This was not the case when Jinnah propounded the 2 nation theory. He is reported to have said that the job of the government was to administer and the people whether they were Hindu or Sikh or Moslem was free to practice their religion. But his death set in motion the wheels of a theocratic state. This resulted in Pakistan being declared an Islamic state with Islam as the state religion. Over a period of time, the pragmatism and freedom inherited from the Raj gave way to bigotry and the Sharia.

In such a scenario girls from Pakistan, began to be denied basic freedoms and we have sad cases of girls like Kandeel Baloch being strangled to death by her brother for being a model. Beauty contests are not allowed in Pakistan. It is like a nation at war with itself. It's almost like a war against the weaker sex. What can one say if a man like general Zia ul-Haq panders to the mullah's and introduces the Hooded ordinance that takes crimes like rape out of the purview of the Pakistan Penal code and puts it under the jurisdiction of the Sharia?

Beauty contests and the Sharia

.These beauty contests would not have been possible in case Ms. Sonia Ahmed had not got the idea to give an exposure to Pakistan women to the world of beauty. The contests are now held every year.

Pakstan has to get out of its death wish. The only news coming out of Pakistan is of terror attacks and being put in the grey list by FATA for terror financing. It's a wonder the Pak government has not seen the light. All credit to the organizers of the Miss Pakistan contest. The beauty contests are however at full steam and In 2020, history was made as the first Catholic Pakistani girl Ravish Zahid Thomas was crowned as Mrs. Pakistan World.

The contests have also diversified and a Mrs. Pakistan for married women has also been launched.

Last Word

Much water has flown down the river since Zehra Sheerazi won the title in 2003. India- Pak relations have nose-dived and political parties like the Shiv Sen are enforcing a ban on Muslim actresses from Pakistan acting in Bollywood. So there is little chance of getting a break in Mumbai. In addition, Pakistan is increasingly being dominated by Islamists and Miss Pakistan cant do much in Pak as well.

There are some who criticize these contests as in Pakistan, women are denied basic rights like right to marry, right to divorce, equal opportunity for job, Equality in Law, and scrapping of obnoxious laws like the Hooded ordinance. However Sonia Ahmed, the president of Miss Pakistan World, defended the event as a movement for self-expression, saying that the participants have the freedom to do as they wish.

Chrish, thanks for commenting. You have made a point that's the real test of a civilization is how they treat the woman and this is where Pakistan sinks.

Chrish Canosa from Manila Philippines on September 11, 2021:

if you want to know how civilized a culturre is, watch how they treat it's women. i dunno who said that.

but that's absolutely true. China is trying to build an empire across the world other nations too, our generation is kind of unpleasant.

Thanks a lot for the information Sir Emge.

Hope you have a wonderful day out there !!!!!!

Tom, thanks, yes you have a point As the Pew survey shows 72% Pakistanis do not want Taliban but a small minority at the point of the gun and terror is holding the majority to ransom.

Ken, Its so nice we agree to disagree. Unfortunately history does not play the game the way you wish it. Thanks for commenting.

Ken Burgess from Florida on September 11, 2021:

We always seem to see things differently, you see the likely collapse of China from within, I see them strengthening their power and control across the globe.

You see China having difficulties with the Taliban in Afghanistan, I see the two aligning and strengthening one another in the region.

You see a strong counter to the Taliban and Sharia Law growing within Pakistan I see a growing determination to wipe western ideals out of the region entirely.

America is withdrawing from this part of the world, future influencers will be Afghanistan, Iran and China.

Thank you Nasreen for your comment. Things are bound to change.

Nasreen Imtiaz on September 10, 2021:

I am from Pakistan and it was nice reading it. The recent attack on a girl by 400 men in Lahore shows the way things are. I am happy that are many who want to fight this orthodoxy.
