Short Hairstyles

We can now easily say that gone are the times when the long hair ruled most of the red carpets.

Now it will be a true statement to say that it is all about the chic bobs, some cool crops if you like quiff then go for some bold quiff and also the mid-length hairdo’s best worn by Alexa Chung.

The summer is just the perfect time for reinventing the hair.

The trip to the hairdressers got easier with our round-up of best short hairdos on beauty block.

Medium Hairstyles for Women

Vary depending on the season and trend.

Now we are going to talk about the trend for summer.

The medium length hairstyles can adapt to the change of the season.

You will notice when the weather is getting warmer and warmer, people tend to bring shorter haircuts out to make a fashion statement.

However, you do not have to shorten your hair.

While it might be the era of super chopped short and long length hairdos, medium haircuts can’t be overlooked.

They are the long-lasting love of Hollywood, and whenever our leading ladies immediately require something super hot, easy and versatile, they turn their heads to these shoulder length haircuts.

Whether you are at a beach party or at an office meeting, they can deliver your instant glamour and oomph.

In fact, a medium cut can be the key for you to transform your ordinary look to the stylish diva over a night – your new years' refreshing look.

Medium Layered Cut

The medium layered cut may look complicated to keep but it really isn't at all. I use this some and it just takes a little mousse and a blow dryer. You can have this style in fifteen minutes or less.

Bend with your hair hanging down and dry just slightly after crunching with mousse; then flip your head up and you have volume and most of the style. Arrange with fingers. There you go.

A very light hair spray can be used to keep all the strands where you want them if you are in an atmosphere that might muss them but with this style; what's a little mussing? Makes it a little sexy and carefree; don't you think?

Here is a fun video with some amazingly simple dos; including some braiding.

I just loved watching ideas I would have never dreamed of and I thought I knew all about hair. Whether you want to try them or not you will enjoy watching I know.

Fabulous Long Styles

Now it’s time for some fabulous long hairstyles to try out in 2014. Long hair can be incredibly versatile: you can wear it loose, in a plait, with braids; you can wear it up or with accessories, and you can try out many different colors and styles. Some of our celebrity inspirations include Kim Kardashian with her poker-straight locks,

Lea Michele with her curly ombre ‘do, Blake Lively and her gorgeous blonde mane, and Rihanna with her ever-changing hairstyles. Take a look through all 100 long hairstyles to find the perfect ‘do for your personal style!

French Braid or Any Braid

Don't you love the braid? I had a French Braid for about three years and everyone thought it was so hard to do but it was very easy and in fact, I had the braid because I was so busy with my mother and traveling to hospitals or therapy every day and there was just no time to even think about hairdos.

I know it looked good because I got almost daily compliments. My hair was very long then and I braided it wet.

That made it really easy to handle and when it dried it took on a puffier fuller look.

Don't think I will ever go back to that now my hair is shorter but I still love to add a braid here or there. Great ideas about that in the video above.

Taylor Swift

Simply Gorgeous

Who would think about trying Julianne's updo? A really sweet look for any occasion and especially cool for summertime.

We see a lot of her lately; don't we and a new hairdo every time.

Here I have her simpler one as they all are; really.

Short, medium or long; hairstyles have come a long way and who would have thought to be so gorgeous in their simplicity? No more living in rollers to be ready to go, huh?

Last but not least I saved Taylor Swift; not really a fan of her usual hairstyles but I found this one quite adorable and her changeover video was so much fun to watch that I have seen it a dozen times I bet; so sharing that with you too.

Then too. the guys deserve something if they have made it this far into my hairstyle article. Don't they?

Hope you found a few styles to interest you. I did!

Great Dryer Tips

To Blow-Dry Straight Hair…

Get the Tools

  • The right dryer: Look for at least 1,800 watts and multiple heat and air settings, says New York City stylist Sarah Potempa. Medium heat is best for predrying hair. High heat manipulates your hair’s shape, and air sets a style.
  • Nozzle: Don’t discard this. It is key to a smooth look and keeps hair from getting too close to the heat.
  • Round brush: Straighten strands, make ends flip, or create waves with this tool. Time-saving tip: The bigger the surface area of a brush, the faster the drying time. Brushes with vents also shave off minutes.
  • Hair clip: It keeps layers separate and easy to manage and prevents damage caused by over drying sections.

Yeah, may not agree with Taylor's politics but she is a great singer and love that song especially.

Thanks for stopping by Peg. Always great to see you.

Peg Cole from North Dallas, Texas on March 21, 2019:

Back to check out these style cuts. From my former life as a hairstylist I can't help but notice people's hair first before anything else like clothes or shoes. I love everything to do with styling hair, hair cuts, perms, color and braiding. The styles you've featured are evergreen and will always look good on certain folks.

Cheers. And thanks for the great music.

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on May 21, 2016:

Peggy, I just am forced into longer hair. I live in a hotter climate and with longer hair I can twist it up off my neck or french braid, etc. I love the short styles to blow and go but they just don't work for me cause my hair won't do that and I end up with more fuss with short hair and I do hate that. Maybe if I could ever get the perfect cut but so far no luck!

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on May 21, 2016:

I like all types as long as we can tell one from the other, true. lol

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on May 21, 2016:

I wear my hair pretty short these days and love the ease of it. I can let it dry naturally or give it a quick blow dry if in a hurry. When I was young I experimented often with different styles but never had really long hair. Fun seeing all these different styles.

Denis Lubojanski from 7 Station Street, London on March 16, 2016:

From the voting result I got my answer that still most of the people like long hair. Personally I prefer long hair for girls as they look more pretty on long hair. :)

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on August 21, 2015:

Thanks Louise; I do too and I get so enthused I will get a cut and then be sorry for the months it takes to grow it back out!

Louise Barraco from Ontario on August 21, 2015:

This is a great hub I love reading about new hair styles

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on January 31, 2015:

Sounds like good advice Peg. I think it is a rare beauty that can take a severe haircut no matter what shaped face. I have had all hair lengths and they seem to suit me so basically I think certain styles really only matter if you are trying to hide something or draw attention from it such as fat face/ double chin or maybe even a blemish that can be partially or completely covered; possibly.

Peg Cole from North Dallas, Texas on January 31, 2015:

These gorgeous women could wear a bag on their heads and still be beautiful. One of the issues that hair stylists face when a client wants their hair to look like a certain actress or model is the shape of the face. That is key to making the style look good on them.

We used to have software that would take a patron's picture and superimpose the image of a style cut they wanted to try. That gives the client a good idea of what the haircut will actually look like on them. Sometimes, even trying on a wig will help in the decision.

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on January 15, 2015:

Hi Peachy. That is about what I have now. I got it because I will be in hospital for surgery and not sure how long with recovery and all but you know how that is for hair! It was getting pretty long but now a wet comb fixes it!

peachy from Home Sweet Home on January 15, 2015:

i love bob hair style, very classic and daring

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on November 21, 2014:

Thanks Deb. So do I if I keep it short but I like to leave it long enough to pin up completely out of my face in the summer so I am letting it grow with only weekly temptations to cut it. lol

Deb Hirt from Stillwater, OK on November 21, 2014:

Lots of great ideas, Jackie. Luckily, I have wavy hair, so all I do is wash and go. It does what it pleases.

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on November 05, 2014:

Thank you Vespa; I try something new now and then but I think we all just have our favorite. Easy is always good!

Vespa Woolf from Peru, South America on November 05, 2014:

Jackie, I really like the styles you chose for this Hub. I have medium-length hair but have had different lengths from time to time. I´m not very creative with my hair so I´m better off with something that takes 15 minutes or less to style, like the medium layered hair style. Thanks for the tips and great ideas!

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 30, 2014:

Thanks ologsinquito; that's true and probably very easy to take care of.

ologsinquito from USA on October 30, 2014:

I like Sandra Bullock's hair cut. That would probably look nice on most people.

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 30, 2014:

Better Yourself; thanks for stopping by. I am with you on that and the French Braid being my favorite but not so easy to do anymore although I can still do a decent one! Medium or long is the best when you just want it all up off your neck! Which is me for most of the summer!

Better Yourself from North Carolina on October 30, 2014:

Great hub, great pics! This was a fun hub to read, who doesn't love playing with their hair and changing things up every now and then. If I could pull off a pixie style I would do it in a heartbeat but my face is too round! I do love having medium to long hair though b/c you can do so many different up-dos with it and I'm a lover of braids incorporated any way possible!!

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 26, 2014:

Hi Nithya; I like Taylors too; probably would take a little curling on that but probably not a lot of time. They inspired me too and I still haven't made up my mind. Sometimes you can have too many choices! lol Thanks for stopping by!

Nithya Venkat from Dubai on October 26, 2014:

All the hairstyles are great but I think Taylor Swift's hairstyle is great. Great pics, now I am inspired to try a new hairstyle!

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 23, 2014:

lol Bill, surprised to see you here but appreciate it for sure! Thanks.

William Kovacic from Pleasant Gap, PA on October 23, 2014:

Trying to decide which one I'd look the best in -lol!

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 22, 2014:

Thanks Nell and me too; I still just cannot decide; maybe I will wait til spring for a short one!

Nell Rose from England on October 22, 2014:

Love it Jackie! I love those short styles, I keep meaning to get one, but chicken out every time! I have had short hair, but not that short! then I grow it again, but it does look better long, oh I don't know, now you have confused me! Haha! great hub, great photos, and now you got me wanting a new hairstyle!

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 21, 2014:

Please do rebecca; don't over dry it and actually my daughter taught me how and it is a real winner! Thanks for stopping by!

Rebecca Mealey from Northeastern Georgia, USA on October 21, 2014:

You picked some very nice styles. I like the blow and go look. You make that medium-length layered look sound so easy, too. I'm going to try that one. Thanks!

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 20, 2014:

Thanks Dianna; this was a really fun one to do. I was looking for myself and thought why not share it. I am pleased so many like it!

Dianna Mendez on October 19, 2014:

Oh la la, I love every one of these hairstyles! I find medium length works best for my features but would love to grow it long instead. Age has its limitations. Thanks for the suggestion on bending over and drying your hair to gain volume and style.

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 19, 2014:

You are welcome Dora and thank you for stopping by!

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 19, 2014:

Thanks Frank for having a look and commenting!

Dora Weithers from The Caribbean on October 19, 2014:

You're so right about thee lovely hairstyles being simpler than some previous ones. Thanks for a good closeup look.

Frank Atanacio from Shelton on October 19, 2014:

Jackie good hub for the women of hub pages.. :( lol

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 18, 2014:

Yes Flourish we just have to try something different now and then. I can't believe anyone would want the same style for life! I have let my bangs grow out for only about the second time in life.

FlourishAnyway from USA on October 18, 2014:

Ever since I was a child and was the victim of a hairdresser's uh-oh that made me look like a boy, I have shunned short hair. Since then I have never worn it shorter than just above shoulder length. Most often I let it grow long, below the shoulders. I will probably always wear it like that, even as an old woman. But I sometimes put layers in it, add bangs, a blunt cut, or chop off several inches,

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 18, 2014:

Yes Mel; and thank you. I agree with you, hair is the funnest of all the primping. Such magic too that when we goof up it will grow back again. Like my granddaughter who cut her bangs at the roots every time she sees a pair of scissors! Some hairdressers have made me feel about as bad. But a few weeks takes care of it.

Mel92114 on October 18, 2014:

Love this Hub! I currently have my hair long again after a stint of short cuts and while I love the ease of short hair, I feel "myself" with it longer. I do like trying new things from time to's so fun!

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 18, 2014:

Thanks lisavanworst; I wouldn't call 40's old but I know what you mean. Looking at older woman (over 40) with long hair it really doesn't seem as good as on younger ones and it is a problem washing and caring for. I want short but winter is my thought too; lol. I will try something in between short and medium I think. I do like Sandra's too with still enough length to twig it up!

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 18, 2014:

No dreadlocks Say Yes to Life but plenty of the other two!

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 18, 2014:

Yes Theresa; it is working fine from my side.

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 18, 2014:

Oh shoot Kim I just saw my mistake but you beat me to it! lol I meant sign!!! Can you do that? Read writing backwards?

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 18, 2014:

Thanks Theresa; I will check it out and replace it if not good cause there were a lot of good ones. Oh hope you watched the shake it off one. Please do!! You can come back later to. I love it.

My hair is medium and no bangs and I think I want it cut the length the bangs have gotten to; just below the chin; actually a lot like yours looks and I want it cut to automatically curl under. If I do anything to mine which is rare it is to use a large curling iron to make it go how I want but usually a wet comb puts it there and it dries. I tell you I started using Nubian EVOO & Moringa (repair and extend styling custard) and even though I don't have a perm or artificial color it is just perfect and I have never in all my years used anything better. No matter the cost it is worth it because you use so little and after you use it awhile you can go days a still not use it cause it has done such wonders for your hair. I love my hair to feel like silk and this does and though I have used some other good things...nothing like this. Shoot I may have to write about it. lol

I love the short and pixie like dos cause my hair is curly when it is short and it is easy for me to style with just hands. Even now when I wear my hair up in bun or ponytail hair curls all around the back of my neck. But once it starts growing it goes to those places I can do nothing with it so that makes me reluctant to cut it.

ocfireflies from North Carolina on October 18, 2014:

Smiles. Funny thing for me is that I have never been able to french braid someone else's hair. And I am pretty sure I can't read a backwards sing.

: )Kim

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 18, 2014:

Wow Kim then you know just what I am talking about. People said they couldn't see how I could do that reaching behind but I tried it and it worked and of course you get better at it. I can read a backwards sing, maybe that has something to do with it; can you? lol

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 18, 2014:

Thank you shrad for sharing mine. I have tried them all too and am at medium now!

Yoleen Lucas from Big Island of Hawaii on October 18, 2014:

How about braids, dreadlocks, and weird colors???

Faith Reaper from southern USA on October 18, 2014:

Hi Jackie,

I love all of these hairstyles. They are so cute. Right now, mine is medium layered, but starting to grow long and I am debating whether to allow it to grow long. So many women are allowing their hair to grow long, even older women it seems. I love that first photo of the short and sassy hairdo and I love how she makes up her eyes. I cut mine almost like that about ten years or more ago and it was so cute. I had lost a lot of weight then, and it seems it looks so cute on thin people. LOL. I love to make up my eyes.

I have found in my experience, that short hair is actually not so easy to care for, as it does require some styling, but that just maybe due to my being used to longer hair. I do love the no sprays, rollers and such of today, as the natural flowing hair is it and I am so glad. However, when I blow dry my hair to get the natural wave out, I use a flat iron and it takes awhile to get it up to today's standard of flat and silky smooth. It looks very nice when I can get it right ... In the mornings I get so hot with the blow dryer and flat iron though, so a lot of days I just scrunch and go and everyone loves it either way. I am not coordinated enough to blow dry and use the round brush at the same time LOL.

I did read that HOTD and was surprised it is even featured ... seems like many would be offended by such, but who knows?

I tried to watch your video, and I could hear it, but the imagery did not show for some reason on my computer?

Great hub as always! Voted up ++++ tweeting, G+ and sharing

ocfireflies from North Carolina on October 18, 2014:

Jackie loved this hub. I, too once wore my hair in a french braid. I braided mine while it was wet because it helped me to stay cool for my hair would dry on the outside and stay damp underneath next to my neck.

When it comes to hair, I am never satisfied. If I have it long, I want it short. I am trying the mid-length right now, but already want to cut it really short or let it hurry up a grow. BIG SMILES! V+

shraddhachawla on October 18, 2014:

Very enjoyable and informative hub. Reading about the latest trends in hair cuts has always been my choice. I have experimented with all the three, short, medium and long cuts, but medium length hairstyles look good on my face. Great hub. Thanks for sharing Jackie.

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 18, 2014:

Thanks Bill; didn't expect you to stop by on this one but glad you did. I still do not know how that got picked and how it is even staying published. That is such an insult to soooo many people! (Not to me, personally, but still!) I flagged it and I hope others will too!

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 18, 2014:

If you don't want short Jo I still see you up there with several. Reese's to start I think would look really good on you and how about Sandra if you want a little shorter but not short and a little different swing? You would look great in may of the above! Like me you have no bangs I see? I have given those up too; seems tidier without them and a little more mature...but I miss them!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on October 18, 2014:

I prefer long hair...but....a classy lady could go shaved and still be classy. Having said that, I was laughing hard at your comment yesterday about the HOTD. Who picks those???? Do they even read them? It would be terribly funny except it's also sad and a bit infuriating. Anyway, have a great weekend.

Jackie Lynnley (author) from the beautiful south on October 18, 2014:

Thank you suzette; very pleased you enjoyed it. I love seeing new styles and contemplating! lol

Michelle Scoggins from Fresno, CA on October 18, 2014:

Thanks Jackie really enjoyed the styles. Last year I went for the big cut - so now I have a pixie cut and it is platinum and I love it!! Though I do enjoy watching the new trends and hairstyles. Great article.

Jo Alexis-Hagues from Lincolnshire, U.K on October 18, 2014:

Jackie, this is indeed a great hub. I really like the short styles,. However, while short hair can look edgy on some women I'm afraid it's not for me with my far to rounded face.:) Haven't really changed my style in...ummm.....years.

Great choice of hair styles but where's mine? :) Hope you're having a fab weekend, my best always..

Suzette Walker from Taos, NM on October 18, 2014:

What a great hub, Jackie. These hair styles are right up my alley. I love all the styles you show and talk about. A great hub full of great hair ideas. I love that braids have come more into fashion as they are so versatile. Thanks so much for sharing this with us!
