Painful Things Women Do and Go Through To Look Pretty/ be Beautiful

When it comes to beautifully groomed hair or drop dead gorgeous stilettos, there is a story. Pain and discomfort are usually contributing factors in these tales. Every woman wants to look her best. The reason is simple, the better we think we look, the higher our self-esteem.

Women all over the world go through many painful and uncomfortable everyday routines so they can look their best. Here is a list of tasks and routines women do which may be painful are uncomfortable.

Ardyss' Body Magic

I wrote this hub months ago but I had to come back and add this at the top of the list. Please note, I am not selling anything here.

My stepmother is an IBO for Ardyss so this is how I happened to come across them. Of course, there are many other products like this on the market that may or may not do the same thing that the Body Magic does but I'm not talking about those here. The Body Magic comes in various sizes, colors and styles and it is meant to help women and men to reshape and contour the body while providing support.

I think the product is pretty cool but it is a pain to put on. No one should attempt to put the suit on without stretching it first. I mean really stretch it! I was helping someone to put it on I I swear I felt something go out in my back. After all the stretching, sweating, slipping, pushing, jumping, twisting, zipping and snapping, both of us fell on the floor exhausted and in pain. If you help someone to put it on you will no doubt lose some weight too.

Curling irons can cause burns to shoulders, scalp or fingers

Curling irons can cause burns to shoulders, scalp or fingers

1. Straightening or Curling

Hair is made up of keratin protein molecules held together by disulfide bonds. Disulfide bonds bind to each other in ways that makes hair curly or straight. In order to change the way your hair looks (make it curly instead of straight or vice versa), these molecules need to be separated then reassigned. This is done by applying heat or chemicals to the hair. Many of the chemicals used to straighten or curly hair may burn or damage the scalp and damage the hair.

When using curling irons, flat irons and hot combs to straighten or curl hair can singe and burn hair and skin if not used properly. These items use heat to break the bonds in hair that gives them their original texture.

4. Acrylic Fingernails

For some, this may be more uncomfortable and cumbersome than painful while for others it may become a huge health risk. To apply the nails, your real nails have to be trimmed, cleaned, and dried perfectly. Acrylic nail sets usually come with all the necessary tools. Use the orange stick to push back the cuticles and use only a small amount of glue on each finger. To remove the nails, soak them in a nail polish remover that has acetone in it. Biting, breaking and pulling off them off will hurt your real nails. If your nails are tender, burning, itching or smelly after you have removed the acrylic nails, you may have an infection.

3. Fake Eyelashes

Eyelashes serve the same purpose as your eyebrows. In many societies it is considered beautiful when women have long eyelashes. In order to make their eyelashes look longer, many women glue fake eyelashes to their eyelids. Do not apply the glue to your eyelid and do not attempt to remove the lashes by simply pulling on it. If it was correctly attached, pulling it will definitely hurt.

Again it is not for everybody. There are those who should throw them out and call it a day. While there are those who wear it well and look beautiful with it. If you are not sure exactly how to put it on then get help. I have known a few women who have attempted to do this themselves and glue their eyelashes close.

7. Shoes

Whether it is too tight, too high, or too flat, shoes are most often causing discomfort. Not wearing your correct size or wearing a particular style of shoes for a periods causes the calves to hurt, misshapes the toes and/or bones in the feet. This can also cause calluses.

6. Skinny Jeans

They look so sexy (on the right body), but getting in and out of them can be tiring and may require some degree of bending, flexing, jumping and gyrating. Who knows, some oils may have to be put to use.

5. Bras

Some women wear bras that are a bit too small for their cleavage so they will have more volume. Due to the size of their bra, it will be tight and leave marks on the woman's back and shoulders.

Women may experience discomfort due to the size of their bra and how tightly they adjust their straps.

Plucking / Waxing Eyebrows

Your eyebrows protect your eyes from dust particles, sweat, and foreign matter. When too much of your eyebrows are removed, there is a greater chance of your sweat running into your eyes or particles from your hair irritating your eyes. Despite its protective purposes, many women (and some men) tweeze, thread, or wax their eyebrows.

Taking off a little may make your eyebrows neater and more feminine, and is a great way to give your face a beautiful lift. Many women take their eyebrows off completely and draw on eyebrows with tattoos, eyeliner pencils, or permanent make-up. While this is beautiful on some women, the process can be very painful.

Tweezing is the process of pulling out the hairs that make up your eyebrows with a tweezers.

When waxing, hot wax is put on the eyebrows and an adhesive is applied. The adhesive strip is pulled off when the wax cools. The hair attached to the cooled wax gets pulled out.

I added another one to the list based on my own experience. Body reshapers definitely top the list.

Definitely a hub that women can relate to better than men. It is amazing how the perception of society towards beauty has its massive impact on the daily life of women. Even the artificial stuff that may not cause instant pain or suffering may have bad long term effects.

The wrong pair of heels can definitely cause a lot of pain the morning after a big night out.

LOL. Thanks for stopping by Vinaya. I'm pretty sure there are men that have a more intense beauty regime than most women do.

Thank god I'm not a woman. LOL

I am pretty much a low maintenance person. I am sometimes amazed at not only the suffering women put themselves through in the name of beauty but also by the amount of time they spend doing it.

So true Riley, especially when you end up having to stand in the bus or at work for long periods.

It's true that we do a lot of crazy things in the name of beauty. The heels are probably the worst.

Thanks for stopping by ChaplinSpeaks. Sometimes we don't even realize how painful some of our beauty routines are. I've had to turn back some mornings just because I forgot to put my work shoes on. Once I didn't realize until I showed up at the office in my flip flops! Oh the agony of the heels...

Interesting Hub! Why do women do these tortuous things?

Loi-Renee (author) from Jamaica on November 20, 2011:

You're right. Many women don't take the time to find out what some of the chemicals in beauty products will do to us.

Cindy Murdoch from Texas on November 19, 2011:

It is amazing what we do to ourselves in the name of beauty. Something else to consider is all the substances that our skin absorbs from makeups and cleansers, the glue and artificial nails you mentioned, even in our hair products. A lot of it is very unhealthy.
