A modern take on the 1950s style

A modern take on the 1950s style

Fashion in the 50's was all about glamour, femininity, and elegance. Skirts flared out to give the appearance of an hourglass figure. Dresses were fitted and came in solid colors, polka dots, leopard or floral prints. Hair was perfectly coiffed in curls or waves. The makeup included bright red lipstick, strong brows, lengthy lashes, and a pale complexion.

This classic look can be recreated for modern women. Choose a red lip with straight hair or curls with a pink lip. Mix vintage pieces with current ones for a unique look. The goal is to make a nod to the fifties without looking as if you're wearing a costume. Find inspiration from the stylish ladies of the 1950s, such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Sophia Loren. Then take cues from the celebrities of today, such as Katy Perry, Vita Don Teese, and Christina Aguilera.

YW.

It's the floppiness of the skirts that were also so distinctive of the 50s. In the next decade not only did the hems go up; the skirts were also straighter.

Yes, in the 50s a tattoo might have have been thought of as quite daring for a women but these days it's been long established as a quite benign, if stylish, enhancement, hasn't it? (Your other thread on tattoos was really good, too.)

Interesting hub, complementing your other hub about 1950s make up, if I remember correctly. Some of the models, above, have tattoos, which wouldn't have happened so much in the 1950s, but then tattoos are colorful and in that sense 195oish, anyway. It was the era of the floppy dress and the sometimes plunging neckline, anyhow.

Love this well-laid out exposition of the beauty, glamor and femininity of 50s fashions and those who exemplify. Great subject and aesthetically pleasing exploration of it.

Interesting hub! For me, it's hard to believe that was 60 odd years ago. Very interesting to see the clothing styles and how they dressed during that time. Voted up, useful, interesting, and shared.

Great hub! Arlene and I had our 50's thing in 1976 (I think).
