I love writing about how to get the best possible look for your skin tone.

Bridal Tip

Bridal makeup for African Americans. Wedding makeup for dark skin tone. Bronze and gold tones look awesome on dark skin with yellow undertones.

Rose Tones

Beautiful dark skin looks amazing in rose tones as well. Perfectly natural and easy to apply. This website also features women of color recommendations for makeup lines, if you're having trouble matching your foundation color.

Originality Counts

Eye-catching makeup for dark-skinned women: Swipe the eyeliner across the edge of your upper eyelid, or both your upper and lower eyelids if you want to create a bolder look. Dark skin tones are best complemented by black or dark brown eyeliner. Lighter colors won't do much to draw attention to your beautiful eyes.

Jen's tone and look are great examples of these principles.

Jennifer's Tone

  • Warm skin tones like Jennifer Lopez's are usually accompanied by green, hazel, amber, or warm brown eyes.
  • Your skin looks healthiest in off-white or beige shirts.
  • Coral, terracotta red, and chocolate brown lipsticks are more flattering than pinks or blue-based reds.
  • The veins on your wrist have a greenish tint. Gold jewelry looks best on you.

Never Fear

For bright blue eyes, peach, light yellow, tan, and light mauve. For grey eyes, you want to use colors that are bolder like dark pink, dark red, dark blue, and you can just use a peach skintone.

Remember how I mentioned that pinks are not exactly the best for blush? Well, for your eye makeup, you should steer away from the pinks and go with deeper browns, blues and maybe even some greens! Trust me ladies, this makeup tip for olive skin tones will really make your eyes pop!

I myself, try to limit the amount of foundation I use on my face because it can get messy. Getting on your clothes, running down your face in hot weather. Looking smeared or smudged, and no one wants that. The idea is to look as natural as possible. And It's hard to do that with a pound of foundation on your face. For a light foundation, I like to use Covergirl outlast, Covergirl Trublend, Black Romance or the Fashion Fair moose.

No Pancakes for Me!

OK girls avoid pancake makeup, if you're DARK skinned own it. Having a dark neck and arms and Geisha face make-up is NOT cute, and adding red lipstick with a white face makes it look worse. Try mixing dark and light foundation together for your natural skin tone because dark skin is beautiful.

The Right Tools

It's always important to keep a fair collection of brushes, that you can alternate between colors. I like to use different brushes for different colors, so as not to mix the color. You want to get the right shade. Mixing brushes ca distort the color that you really want. Remember to keep your brushes cleaned out for future use.

On the Eyes

Here’s a sexy yet very simple go-to look that works for many occasions. On the Eyes: Mac’s Grape pigment (lids), Carbon (outer v), Swiss Chocolate (Crease), Feline Eye Kohl on waterline. Mac’s Dark Diversion Fluidline for my burgundy brows. Stila Custom Color pink blush. Mac’s Cork lip liner w/Revlon’s Pink Pout lipstick and clear lip gloss

On the Eyes

DIY honey lemon face mask: smooths and brightens! Great for acne-prone skin, dark spots and uneven skin tone.

Concealer comes in a variety of shades. So, be careful in choosing the right one. Don't use pink base concealer for under-eye circles. It will end up looking grey due to being bluish or purple. For more natural-looking skin, use golden-toned concealer

Spring Forward

This spring show off your fair skin with these makeup tones!

  • Skin: Whether you use a tinted moisturizer or full-coverage foundation, look for anti-redness agents if your skin gets irritated easily.
  • Cheeks: Peaches and pinks. For a more bronzed look use honey-tones.
  • Eyes: Brown mascara and liner during the day for a subtle look. Switch to black or navy for night.
  • Lips: Bright shades, apricots, reds with blue undertones, and pink. Avoid brown or dark neutrals which make you look washed out.

Your Skin

We need a clean slate to work with. Picking the right foundation for your skin is vital. If you have sensitive skin, grab some mineral-based foundation. If you have particularly oily or sweaty skin, and you’re running around all day, it’s probably best to go for something that gives you longer coverage. Talk to the girl in the make up department if you’re not sure. Picking the right shade is really important.

A dark, blue-based red: While the classic bright red lip does not work for the olive skin tones, a darker version of this classic color can indeed be rocked. Take any classic red and top it with a warmer gloss to make a complimenting shade. A warm gloss will eliminate the cool base in these “true red” colors, making the color much more suitable. I used Revlon’s Colorburst lipstick in Crimson.

Your Tone

Finding The Perfect Nude for the Dark Skinned Girl....its also helpful for lighter skin tones. Just go with your natural bottom lip color. Dark Lipstick can be very sexy on a woman...especially if you're African American...The dark purple and dark red can be very complimentary to chocolate skin tones!

Applying Dark Lips

How to Wear Dark Lipstick?

  1. Apply some lipstick primer or foundation to your lips to avoid your dark lipstick fading.
  2. Ensure your lips are free from flakes.
  3. Use lip liner to define your dark lips and match it to your lipstick shade.
  4. Use a lip brush to get a professional finish.
  5. You can mute too dark shade by dabbing some clear lip gloss.
  6. For cool skin tones, choose lipsticks with blue undertones and for warm skin tones choose oranges or browns shades.

Everyday Glam

New year

New year, new makeup inspiration. This month, why not put your color efforts elsewhere? Instead of a statement eye, go for a statement lip. For the eyes: Take a light brown liner and line the upper and lower lash line. Keep the rest of the eye naked. Coat lashes with a dark brown mascara several times for the most impact.

A smokey eye, great for darker complexions - Bright gold/Bronze tones swept across the lid, paired with deep smokey browns and nude lip

Lid: carbon all over with stars-n-rockets on the center of lid. Soft brown and carbon in the crease. Orb under my brow. All Mac eye shadow. Red cherry 47 # Lashes. Sweet as cocoa blush (warm soul is good for lighter skin tones). Mac Pro sculpting powder (under eye highlight). Lips: mac peach stock and YSL rouge voluptuous 19 lipstick.

Shake your shimmy

Avoid choosing eye shadows that match your eye color. Blue eyes won’t get enough accent if you match them with blue eye shadow tones. Opt for contrasting colors instead, such as dark brown or black that will truly highlight the beautiful color of your eyes, giving you a deeper, sensual look. Tip: no matter what your age, don’t avoid shimmer. A light shimmer adds depth and youth to the skin. Just don’t overdo the shimmer.

Accentuate facial contours with different foundation shades. Dark powders emphasize cheekbones while light powders highlight the apples of your cheeks, both bringing a bronzed appeal that warms the complexion.

Buying online

When shopping online for your cheap cosmetics make sure you are buying the right color shades. Check your skin tone and go from there. First, decide what skin tone you have - is it light, fair, medium or dark. The last thing you want to do is buy the wrong shade of lipstick or foundation for your skin tone. As long as you match the right shades to your skin tone you will be fine...
