Longer days in Spring equals longer hemlines?

That is what it seems to be! Top designers demonstrated longer hemlines on the Spring 2011 runways! Minis have been ruling the runways for what seems to be forever now and this is certainly a welcome change. Keep those minis away for a while as skirts and dresses which hit the knees and below are here to keep you company this Spring and Summer!

Of course minis will never go out of style and if you’ve got those gorgeous long legs why not show them off?

But "long" is not always boring! It can look as sexy and chic as a mini skirt! In fact, "long" can make you look more feminine for a date night or an evening party.

What are your thoughts? Are you going to try to give the new hemline a shot this season? I say that you must!

=================================================================

The million $$ question - what should you buy??

Traditionally, anything that is below your knees would qualify as a longer hemline. But here are some options that you can look out for the next time you are out shopping.

=================================================================

Mid-calf length dresses and skirts

Look for mid-calf, A-line dresses and skirts and pair them with a long cardigan and a belt.

The long cardigan is also one of the key pieces for your wardrobe this Spring. This versatile piece of clothing is warm enough to keep away the late winter chill and looks fabulous when paired with almost anything!

Taller silhouettes have a distinct advantage with the mid-calf length as they can comfortably carry off the style with heels or ballet flats. If you have a short, petite frame try the look with nude colored heels. But try to stick to about 3 inches at the most as the “ultra high heel” look is soon to get completely voted out.

And needless to say, any look is never complete without the right accessories, so team it up with an oversized bag in a contrasting color and you are ready to rock!

Ankle length dresses and skirts

The ankle length style is the best bet if you are confused as to whether you will be able to carry off a mid rise length.

Look for the contemporary ankle length t-shirt dresses or the floor grazing bohemian styles which come in prints as well as solids. Bohemian style dresses look elegant and can be worn either flowing or with a belt.

Gladiator sandals work best with the boho look. And don't forget to don those oversized sunglasses to complete the bohemian look!

Skirts and dresses with asymmetrical hemlines - the "high-low" hemline

Long means boring? Oh no! Certainly not!

It’s not only the longer hemline but now you can add a dash of style and subtlety with a long plus an asymmetrical hemline. Popularly known as the "high-low" hemline, this look is the dominant feature this season with leading and not-so-leading designers!

Look for skirts and dresses with an asymmetric hem and shun the linear silhouette. The asymmetry can be either from the front to the back or from side to side.

Forever 21 has a great collection of hi-low dresses and skirts.

Long hemlines make headlines at Milan shows

What to wear with your midi?

  • Working the long hemline
    Work Spring's new hemlines into your wardrobe, go for a 1970s look with the midi skirt while bright maxi skirts should be paired with simple T-shirts.

The NEW LENGTH is here to stay

“It’s refreshing to see hemlines come down,” said Meredith Melling Burke, senior market editor at Vogue magazine. “The wearability of the mini is limited. While it looks sexy on the runway, the application is for a very specific audience."

Here are some of the designers who focused on this trend on their Spring 2011 runways; Chloe, Chanel, Alexander Wang, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Jil Sander, Brioni, Stella McCartney, Peter Pilotto, Rebecca Taylor and Ralph Lauren.

Stella McCartney and Peter Pilotto kept the long affair sexy on the runway with higher slits whereas Michael Kors and Calvin Klein kept things more traditional and straight. But, either way, the emphasis clearly was on “length” with a plethora of designs focusing on mid-calf to ankle grazing.

Is it the economy that has kicked off the mini skirt from the runway this Spring? After all, it is an old saying that hemlines go up in a good economy and down in a bad one! "There's a general growing up of fashion after a very difficult year," said Joanna Coles, editor in chief of Marie Claire magazine. "Women don't want dressing up to be so complicated. The hemline dropping is part of that."

Well, economy or no economy, this NEW LENGTH, more commonly known as MIDI in the fashion world is here to stay! It is a fresh look which has dawned on the runway after years of minis and skin show.

"We haven't seen long in a long while," said Ann Gitter, owner of Knit Wit. "Long was for party dresses and dressy dresses. All ages can embrace this look, whether you are in your 20s or your 60s. We were in a short mood for so long, my older customer was feeling left out."

Where to buy cheap maxi dresses and midi skirts?

This is what Ruth La Ferla from the New York Times had to say - "Fast-fashion outposts like Topshop and Forever 21 sell their own variations of the newly slender maxi. Zara, too, has budget-friendly interpretations, including a black floor-length pleated tank dress and an earth-tone hip-slung skirt. While Zara does not disclose sales figures, a spokeswoman said that maxi-skirts and dresses have proved so successful that it plans to reissue some styles and add others throughout the fall."

I love this more lady-like and modest style that's more popular now. I think the 70's has influenced the maxi dresses for today.
