In all our travels and experiences, we go through life seeing and doing things that are occasionally remarkable. In my line of work, appraisals – gems – jewelry, I run across some natural wonders. This was one of them.
In early May of 2010 a good friend of mine asked me if I could do an appraisal for him on a “A LEGENDARY LUMINOUS PEARL”. ‘Yes of course’ I said not knowing at the time that this was something special and not actual Pearl as I knew them. This was a Chinese artifact he had picked up while he was working years ago in China. I really didn’t know what he was talking about but I assured him I was capable of appraising any gem or gem material. But even though I had never heard of it I was sure I could do it. As it turned out I was right but it took a lot of research and learning about legends as well as mystical objects from the Orient.
The accompanying photo below is of a Thai counterpart I found in a local home. Although it is not fluorite it has the same phenomenon as the Chinese stone. And similar legends of fireballs or glowing spheres exist in many cultures throughout Asia. ( SEE: http://hubpages.com/hub/BUDDHA-MAN)
The accompanying photo is of a Thai counterpart I found in a local home. Although it is not fluorite it has the same phenomenon as the Chinese stone.
Fortunately I started with a kind of roadmap to follow, it was a report from the “Beijing Qinsi Assets Appraisal Consulting Center” dated July 5, 2003, Beiqin Evaluation No.:(014).
This Gem material is described as a rare class of “Natural Emerald-color Gem-grade Legendary Luminous Pearl of Green Fluorite”. This official Chinese report identifies this 556 gram sphere of Fluorite as “a green fluorspar legendary luminous pearl, which is a real legendary luminous pearl examined by China Pearl Treasure Association…..and it is a real rare treasure in the world.”
Photoluminescent, “Yemengzhus”, also known as Legendary Luminous Pearls in China, are balls of a rare glow in the dark fluorite.
January 15, 2002, the world's largest Yemengzhu was put on display in Shenzhen, China its weight was 14.35 kilograms and had a diameter of 21 cm. This pearl was valued at 1.2 billion U.S. dollars. Since this discovery larger pieces have been found, like the one below. However none have proven to be better quality than the 14.35 kg piece. A very large 6.1 ton piece valued a $3.1 billion US was unearthed but of lower quality. At the time of the appraisal the value of these stones was 5X what these stones are today, but will fluctuate with movement of the Chinese markets.
“Every kid in China knows the story of ‘The Legendary Luminous Pearl’. It is believed that touching a pearl will bring you great prosperity and good luck The belief has spawned a whole multi million dollar industry making and selling man made Yemengzhus for the home.”
VALUED AT $335M
The Chinese backup information on this phenomenal gem claims an incredible rarity for this stone. The Emerald Green color also is even more rare in this form. This is truly a magical gem with an incredible history. Very rare.
The prices for these objects can go very high depending on the demand and availability of suitable pieces. The better the quality the higher the price. A Chinese’s Supermarket owner borrowed 70 million dollars from his stock holders to buy a Yemengzhu to display in his chain of stores. But when the stone was sold out of bankruptcy it only fetched 5 million dollars. The vagaries of the market place will always dictate the value, ‘it is only worth what someone will pay”.
