You and Your Hair
Hair Extension And Superstition
People in some countries, mostly in Africa, have developed an irrational and superstitious belief about human hair extensions. It is not just a matter of illiteracy, even the educated ones holds this religious belief. Superstition has a very long history in regards to believe in an unknown.
Can you imagine that some held this belief in the name of devotion to God? That is what a book called The Amish People once reports that some “restrict their physical appearance because they feel that any member who has a lively interest in worldly appearance is threatened, since [that] interest should be focused upon spiritual considerations rather than physical”.
The ancient Athenians in Asia had such believes in an unknown which they also held in the name of devotion. When a Christian preacher called Paul traveled to that land, he was worried at such held superstitions and was moved to say to them;
“Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are too superstitious…for I passed by your devotions…to the unknown God”. (Acts 17 v22, 23)
Another translation put it this way; “that you are most religious or very reverent to demons”. (Amplified bible)
The concise English dictionary defined superstition as; “excessively credulous belief in, and reverence for the supernatural, or a widely held but irrational belief in supernatural influences”. You will certainly like to know what the superstition belief on human hair extension is.
Some congregational Church in some part of Africa like Nigeria, have refused to put on human hair extension, especially attachment. The reason being that such hair extensions originate from the Devil, evil-spirit or the so-called Mammiwater (Mammon) You can’t even imagine how this belief have spread like the wide fire and is even being thought as a true teaching by some so-called Christian churches. Worst yet, what make this to be worrisome is that those spreading this idea are well respected and famous so-called men of Gods.
Off course this belief that any putting on hair extensions sin against God, are not shared by majority. This view however, have made it hard for many to know whether the idea is wrong or right, and the thought of sinning against God by using a devilish thing cause limping on two different opinion regarding fixing hair extensions, should I or should I not, Is the question they often ask themselves?
Wool As Hair Extension
However, a few does accept the use of wool, while completely rejecting all extensions gotten directly from humans, they would not agree that such hairs comes from human, and even if it should, ‘attaching to our hairs someone’s else hair is not acceptable to God’ they argue. ‘God do not want us put attachments unto the natural hairs he had given to humans’ they insist.
However, which is closer to natural, the one made from materials that are not originally part of humans or one from humans which was originally made by God? Before considering this question and others related to it in details, may we first consider briefly the historic origin of human hair extensions and their line of descend to us, and if the attachments women use today as hair extension actually comes from Mammon. In fact, we will take a look at God’s view of women adornment-if hair extension and other adornment articles are condemned in the scriptures and therefore are wrong for Christians.
Earliest Known Origin Of Hair Extension
Just as when it comes to the Origin of Finger ring, the earliest known origin of human hair extension goes as far back as the ancient Egyptians. . The Egyptians had, probably, the most peculiar customs with regard to their hair. The men, especially priests and soldiers, shaved their heads and beards. Historian Herodotus says that the Nile dwellers shaved the heads of the boys, leaving only a few locks on the sides and perhaps on the front and back. When the child reached maturity these were removed as being marks of childhood.
The Ancient Egyptians (c. 3400 B.C)
Some Egyptian monumental representations show men of high rank with long, well-cared-for hair; it is not discernible from the monuments, whether the hair is their own or is a wig.
However, “there are well documented evidence that human hair extension were widely used in ancient Egypt as cosmetic adornments, worn by Pharaohs and other important members of society”, says one source. These very extensions were attached to the hair using a complex system of weave and knots.
However, in those days, the hair extensions weren’t that of humans, they were made from vegetable fibers, wood or other materials. It is similar to the synthetic hair (more on synthetic hairs later) extensions used today.
Thus, “some five thousand years ago, the ancient Egyptians laid the ground work not just for pyramids but also for today’s ultra-modern hairdo’s” says the source.
The ancient Assyrian, Babylonian, Roman, and Hebrews.
The Assyrian and Babylonian men, and Asians in general, wore their hair long. Assyrian reliefs show the men with close-combed hair, the ends falling on the shoulders in curls. Their beards were also long, sometimes divided into two or three tiers of curls, with the mustache trimmed and also curled. Some believe that the very long hair depicted on the monuments was partly false, an addition to the person’s natural hair.
In ancient times the Romans evidently wore beards but, about the third century B.C.E., adopted the custom of shaving.
The Hebrew women often let their hairs grow long, taking very good care of it as mark of beauty. They usually style or weave their hairs even as the various biblical portions implies.
For example, Isaiah 3 v 24 says; “Instead of balsam oil, there will be a rotten smell; Instead of a belt, a rope; Instead of a beautiful hairstyle (well-set hair), baldness; Instead of a rich garment, a garment of sackcloth And a brand mark instead of beauty”.
Victorian Era (U.K)/The Gilead Age (u. s)
The Victorians are often remembered when it comes to their hair. One source says that; “in 1983, Britain imported an estimated tons of about 102 of human hair from France”. By then, the use of human hair as a extension was just beginning. Both men and women wore it as a sign of beauty and wealth.
“Women used the extra length to create complex and opulent hair styles like Appolo knots, which resembled the beehives of the 1950’s” says the source. All these extensions weren’t from the Mammon as today superstition goes, but are from real humans not Mammons as many thinks.
Early 1900s-1914, To 21st Century
Women have always cared for their hairs even as some men do. When real hair extensions made from human hair came, it afforded an opportunity for women whose hair is naturally short to add to theirs.
The extensions of this era are called ‘Switches’ and were clipped into hair, similar to Tousled hair of today. According to one source, there were advertisements showcasing the quality and what they were made from.
One advertisement about year 1905 says; "these switches are…made of splendid quality selected human hair, and to match any ordinary shade”, says Nicola Augustine.
Thus, there is not even one rational evidence to prove that hair extensions as use today, descends from Mammons or so-called Mamiwater of the Africans.
Tips On: Hair Extensions
Indian Hair (aka Asian Hair, Italian Hair): "A variety of fiber types from fine and straight, medium thick with body wave and curly to thick coarse hair. Italian hair is actually Indian hair that has been processed in Italy or Spain and then sold at premium prices.
- High Quantity
- Good Quality
- Variety and Low Manufacturing Cost.
-Indian hair is popular to use for custom made hair extensions, hairpieces and wigs because it can be made to resemble European hair. Although prices for Remy Indian hair increase every 2-3 months, it is still available in the less expensive non-Remy form.
- The Indian hair fiber is small in diameter compared to Chinese hair and after chemical processing can feel and look just like European hair.
- A great attribute of Indian hair is that it comes in a full range of textures and body.
- Low Quality
- Higher Retail Cost.
- Indian hair still requires quite a lot of chemical processing to make it appear as European hair. And the efforts to maintain the integrity of Remy hair and/or buy the best quality in India can increase prices closer to European hair.
- To reduce time and materials, many manufacturers choose to work with non-Remy Indian hair, which must undergo the same processes as Chinese hair that results in a poorer quality.
- Indian hair is also known to have split ends; lice and most exporters handle the hair badly.
Common Use: The remy hair is often produced as European or Italian hair for custom-made wigs and hair extensions. The non-remy hair is processed for custom-made hairpieces, less expensive wigs, and machine and hand-made hair extensions ( Reprinted by Donovan)
Chinese Hair (aka Asian Hair):
(aka Asian Hair): This type of hair is a thick and coarse fiber that is naturally straight and dark
- High Quantity
- Low Cost
-Strongest human hair capable of withstanding multiple chemical and mechanical processes.
- Easily mass-produced.
- Comfortable to process at the manufacturing level and there is no shortage of supply.
- Ventilating a hairpiece does not require as much skill or care as with cuticle hair.
- Poor Quality.
- Chinese hair requires extensive chemical processing to output hair that simulates European texture, color and body.
- The majority of the hair is collected and processed as double drawn, non-Remy hair that requires heavy-duty chemicals to remove cuticle layers.
- It is still at a high risk for severe tangling problems because the cuticles are large and the layers are dense.
- The thick strands reflect light differently and appear 3 times as large next to Caucasian hair.
Common Use: Inexpensive off-shelf wigs, hairpieces and machine made hair extensions. ( Reprinted by Donovan)
Synthetic And Human’s Hair Extensions
Hair extensions can be classified into two major categories. They are the Real human’s hair, collected directly from people and processed.
Secondly, the Synthetic hairs made of a wide array of different synthetic fibers.
The real human’s hairs are majorly gotten from Asia-China, India, and Korea. These people sell their long hairs to manufacturers and its being loop directly off their head, and are processed in companies where color and texture are being added, and various hair extensions techniques are used to maintain the naturalness of this hairs. There is no substantial evidence to the rumor that some of this hairs are gotten from dead bodies, if there is at all, it is rare.
Thus, because of the way the synthetic hairs are precessed to resembled the real hair, it is often difficult to identify on image.
Biblical View on Hair Extensions
Just as we have carefully examine in “a Critical look at women adornment”, the Old Testament of the bible condemns not the use of artificial materials-ornaments, cosmetics, hair extensions, beautiful clothes-that women use to add to their beauty, but the wrong use of them. In Old Testament God has recognized these articles as elements that adds to a woman’s beauty.
We are wise then to ask; what about in the New Testament, how does God view hair extensions?
Excuse me, if you have reasoned the above question in your mind, let me ask you too this question; do you expect God to change?
Christian Women, Has God Changed?
In the bible God says he does not change (Malachi 3 v6) that means he does not fluctuate on his standards of right and wrong. That does not mean he is not reasonable, but his principles of right and wrong remains the same, especially ones he had long revealed in the scriptures as his standard on a thing.
Just as we discoursed a few burning bible portions in Old Testament at “a critical look at women adornment” that many usually misinterprets, let us now look at few portions in New Testament that are misinterpreted but which proves that God is not against hair extension or ornamental wear.
Wool Hair extensions
Some who against human hair extensions accepts wool for an alternatives, arguing that it is not from humans or even its not attachment, then what is it?
"Wool is a textile fiber obtain from sheep and certain other animals, including cashmore from goats, Mohair from goats, aquavit from Muskoxen, angora from rabbits and other types of wool from comolids" says one source.
It is generally true that the wool fabrics have greater bulk than other textiles, and they hold hairs even more than the synthetic or natural human hair extensions, but the fact remains that it is still an extension, in fact it is not even part of the natural part of humans at all.
What Says The New Testament?
On ornaments, James 2 v2 indicates; “supposed a man comes into your (the Christians he is talking to) meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also come in”.
Here thus indicates that Christians, like the Hebrews, made use of ornaments.
On hair extension and styles, 1 Timothy 2 v 9, 10 indicates; “in the same way, that women also adorn themselves in decent clothing, with modesty and propriety; not just with braided hair, gold, pearls, or expensive clothing” ( The Phoney bible)
For the fact that apostle Paul mentioned by name “braided hair” or ‘attachment’ is evidence that Christian women he was talking to really were made use of hair extensions, or styled their hairs by adding cosmetics and oil, just like they also made use of ornaments mentioned here-gold, peals, and even expensive clothes.
The advice Paul gave here shows that he shares God’s view on adornment. The warning then was on the wrong use of these things mentioned herein. Notice the phrase; “not just”, Paul encourages women not to focus on just their physical beauty but primarily on the qualities of godly devotion, moderation, decency and propriety.
When they put it on, they should do so in a modest manner and with good intentions of heart. Thus, to argue that God in this verse condemned the wearing of hair extension or styling one’s hair is also say that God forbids Christians from putting on “expensive clothes” and ornaments, would that be reasonable?
At 1 Peters 3 v 3, 4. Apostle Peter also spoke of adornment but yet like Paul, in no way was he condemning adornment for Christian but was emphasizing modesty. Thus any idea more than the things the bible says is actually a superstition.
Human Hair and Wool extensions
Thus, the wide spread belief that human hair extensions-be it wool, attachment, weavones-are Satanic is simply an irrational belief.
To show how unreasonable some religious leaders could be, why could some use wool as hair extension while terming human hair as evil? Yet which is closer to original, wool or human's hair?
If people reject it on the bases that the hairs belongs to another person, and thus not right to put it on, why then will such people not choose to be transplanted with an animal's Kidney instead of that which belongs to another person?
Will you reject Kidney's transplant just because it belongs to another person?
Also, how about blood transfusion. Do people reject to be transfused simply because the blood were not the one running through their veins, simply because it is someone's else?
It is unreasonable then for anyone to reject human hair extensions just because it is someone's else.

Hi Dr, what you just said is it really so? Any way, thank your for commenting

These thoughts lack scriptural references. It is rather worldly and based on what people do which has no scriptural background.
This is ignorance of scripture.
