How to Make Your Own Conditioner

Why make your own conditioner

There are many different benefits to making your own conditioner. You can save quite a bit of money by making your own. Conditioner may not seem like it costs that much but anyone on budget can tell you every penny counts. The best benefit is that you get the same silky smooth hair with out all of the potentially harmful and unnecessary chemicals and fillers. Also with home made conditioner you can choose the oils that best suite your hairs needs and just about any fragrance you want. This can be really nice if you have really unruly difficult hair. This can be a really nice option for some one with serious allergies because they know everything that they are putting into the conditioner.

How to make your own conditioner

What you need to make the conditioner

  • One cup of water
  • One egg
  • Half a cup veggie or olive oil
  • A couple tea spoons of your favorite essential oil ( like lavender or rose oil)
  • Half a cup of mayo
  • One bowl
  • One empty shampoo bottle
  • A spoon to mix the ingredients

What to do next

Once you have everything you will be needing you can get started. Add the water, veggie oil and egg into the bowl. Mix well and then add the mayo and the essential oil of your choice. You can choose more than one kind of oil. Mixing different oils will give you different fragrances. If you have dry or oily hair their may a specific oil that can help. After you add these last ingredients and mix everything together you can pour the mixture into the empty shampoo bottle. Shake the bottle and let it settle until you are ready to use it.

Why this works

Your hair contains oils that keep silky, smooth and soft. Just about any kind of heat styling takes the moisture, protein and nutrients out of your hair. Also coloring, bleaching, relaxing and perming can cause damage and rob your hair of natural oils and vitamins. Conditioners play a big role in putting all the of these things back into your hair and scalp. The water is mostly an ingredient used to mix everything together and to dilute the mixture a little bit. Eggs are high in protein which is incredibly good for your hair. Mayo is also rich in protein. The essential oils you use are mostly used for fragrance in the conditioner but also can be used to fix problems with difficult hair. Difficult hair meaning oily, dry, damaged, dandruff or just used to promote more hair growth.

Different substitutions

If you have allergies to something in this recipe or if you just don't like mayo like me there are some great substitutions you can try.

  • You can use plain yogurt instead of mayo
  • You can just use the mayo instead of the egg
  • You option of veggie or olive oil
  • You can replace the veggie oil with coconut oil or jojoba oil
  • You can use tap or distilled water

The fun thing about making your very own conditioners and shampoos is that you choose what you put into it. This gives you the freedom to be creative and use what works for you. If something in the recipe doesn't fit your needs you can just take it out and replace with something similar that you prefer.

These recipes are so much healthier that is the main reason why I switched. It is crazy how many chemicals are in our every day grooming products. I hope these work out well for you also. Thank you for commenting

Extremely interesting article. I have made my own mix of conditioners too. I have used Aloe Vera on my hair as well and it really has fixed my damaged hair. I highly recommend trying it!

Really interesting. I always wanted to make my own hair products, soap etc. This is easier than my favorite brownie recipe. I like the idea of not having all those chemicals in the products we use on our bodies.
