Today anyone can do their own facial at home. All you need is to take an hour out of your Sunday evening to get it done. While it is enjoyable to get a professional facial done by a qualified beautician, if your budget doesn't allow for this, then buy the items you need and do it yourself.

Why not invite your friend or sister around on a Saturday night and have some drinks and turn it into a beautifying night party.

Prior to beginning your facial, do some research and make sure you have everything that you will need in your bathroom. Make sure you find an hour where you won't be interrupted so you can chill and relax while you are doing your facial. Do it in your bedroom or bathroom if possible or if you live alone do it in your sitting room.

Use a balm or an oil based cleansers for your first cleanse to help remove makeup from your skin. This is good if you have dry skin. If you don't have this on hand you can use baby oil.

Step 1: Cleansing and Toning

Apply an oil based cleanser to your face to remove your makeup from your skin. Rub the oil between your palms and massage it into your face. This will help to remove the top layer of makeup. Use a warm wet flannel to clean this off your face.

The next step is to apply a cream cleanser to your face. Apply it to your face and massage into your skin. This will cleanse your skin and remove any remaining dirt or makeup on your face. Use a flannel to remove this cream.

Next wet your face and apply a facial scrub to help remove the build-up of dead skin cells. Gentle apply the scrub onto your face rubbing it into your face in circular motions. Remove with a wet flannel.

You don't need to do this next step but if you have a toner you can wet a cotton pad with some of it and gently wipe your face once with it.

Now you are ready for the next step.

Step 2: Steaming your Face

Using the steamer allows you pore to soften with allows you to remove any blackheads. Use two cotton pads or a blackhead extractor tool to remove any blackheads. A 20x magnifying mirror is good for this task. Ensure you wipe your tool after every extraction to avoid cross contamination.

If you don't have a facial steamer use a basin filled with hot water. Place a towel over your head and put our face over the hot water for 10 minutes. The towel stops the steam escaping. Be careful to not get to close to the steam. You do not want to burn your skin.

Make sure that you have sterilised your blackhead/ whitehead extractor in boiling water before you use it.

Step 3: Using a Hot Cloth Cleanser

If you don't have a facial steamer, you can skip this step and instead go to the next step which is applying a hot cloth cleanser. Apply the cleanser to your face and let sit for 15 minutes. Place the warm wet muslin cloth over your face. Leave it on your face for 15 minute. After 15 minutes remove any cream left on your skin with some cotton pads.

Apply a cream mask or a sheet mask to your face

Step 4: Apply a Sheet Mask to Your Face

There are a variety of different facial masks that you can use. There are the sheet masks that you leave on for 15 minutes and then you remove and massage the residue left on your face into your skin.

There are also cream mask like the ones from Montagne Jeunesse where you get different scents and colored mask for different skin issues.

A facial mask gives your skin instant hydration.

If you use the cream masks and you have dry, oily or combination skin in different parts of your face, you can use a bit of each face mask cream on those areas.

The face masks that harden on your skin and then required you to peel it off can lead to sagging skin as you are pulling on the skin of your face.

You can use the facial masks that harden on your face but are easy enough to then remove with a wet flannel.

Store any unused masks in the fridge.

Step 5: Hydrating

After you have removed your sheet mask from your face the next is to apply a facial mist from The Bodyshop or one from La Roche Posay.

Spray a list mist over your face and let it absorb into your skin. Applying a facial mist prior to applying your moisturizer allows your skin to absorb the moisturizer better when it is applied.

There are a lot of brands of facial mist on the market that contain vitamins and nutrients that are good for your skin. Choose a facial mist designed for your skin type or one for your skin that will help with any issues you have

It is wise to choose a brand that has a good reputation and one that no one has any issues with. If you apply the facial mist and you have any issues with it, and then stop using it straight away.

Step 6: Moisturizing

When it comes to applying a moisturizer, choose a cream one if you have dry skin and choose a lotion if you have oily skin. Use one that will give you plenty of moisture and make your skin look plump.

Night time moisturizers usually have a thicker consistency compared to the day time ones.

If you have issues with your skin you can use products specifically designed to deal with these issues like those from Tata Harper or Drunk Elephant. Brands that are more affordable would be products from The Body Shop or Glossier.

Facial Exercises

Doing facial exercises or face yoga is a good way to keep the skin on your face firm. Try to do the exercises on your face a few times a week and build it into part of your night-time routine if you can.

You might not see any results instantly but in the long run it is doing your skin some good and helping to keep your skin firm and youthful.
