How to Style Boots in 2019

Boots for 2019

In FW18, boots were a huge part of both high fashion and streetwear alike. And, unlike previous years, silhouettes and styles were more diverse than ever. While the modern utilitarian combat boot remains a favorite among some, there are now more options than ever to choose from when considering boot styles. We will be going over a few popular styles, such as vintage G.I boots, modern combat boots, and the hiking boot.

Boots are cool and versatile. Get some while you can.

Vintage G.I Boots

These vintage boots are probably the best known, and the most widely known type of boot in the fashion world. Every brand, from Rothco to Maison Margiela, has made some type of vintage G.I type of boot. These boots are the most versatile and wearable boots in the industry, and are amazing for people trying their hand at punk, grunge, and alternative fashion.

However, these boots do have some rules to look exceptional in an outfit. Given their more hardcore roots in counter culture, these boots are best paired with other “counter culture“ staples. A tried and true look is a pair of straight leg jeans with a vintage tee. If you want to add on, a bomber jacket or flannel work well to add something to a plain outfit. However, it is best to stick with baggier, less fitted garments when wearing these boots.

Another look to try when wearing these vintage boots is a milsurp aesthetic. BDU cargos, milsurp camo pants, and a plain or graphic top pairs best with these old style boots. Just like the look mentioned before, stick to baggier fits when wearing these boots. Though skinnier fitted shirts and jeans may work well with jeans, I personally think it all looks better when baggier

Where to buy these boots

These boots are very easy to find. Doc Martens, Rothco, milsurp stores, and several high end fashion houses have several varieties of this boot style. Really, it all depends on personal preference and style. These are the boots you’ll be the most free to experiment with.

I would never forget Docs. Whether you like them plain or with a few embellishments, Docs are timeless and my personal favorite boot.

The “modern” combat boot

The modern combat boot, while significantly less popular than the older style of combat boot, many modern brands, such as Yeezy or Fear Of God, have taken inspiration from the modern combat boot. Modern combat boots tend to be more techy, with Vibram soles, techwear fabrics, and sturdy, utilitarian designs. Modern combat boots don’t pair too well with vintage looks, but they pair well with modern grunge and techwear styles.

If you’re looking at modern grunge, baggier stops still reign supreme. However, more fitted jeans and maybe sweatpants would work better with this look. Modern combat boots rely on the more refined modern looks that modern chic grunge offer.

These boots also work well with techwear due to their slimmer, more modern design. I’m no expert on techwear though, so for inspiration you can look at such brands as Y-3, APC, and ACW for techwear looks.

The modern style is also fairly diverse, with jungle boots such as these, or more desert oriented styles that you can find in milsurp stores and rothco.

These are also fairly diverse in style and price range. Yeezy and Fear Of God have good options exclusively for style, while Rothco and milsurp have the more utilitarian ideals for these boots.

Hiking boots

Finally, we get to the least popular type of boot. Hiking boots were big for FW18, and are possibly the cheapest, but least diverse, type of boot today. Hiking boots are harder to style, and more difficult to integrate into streetwear. However, it’s still possible.

Hiking boots are inherently outdoorsy boots, and it’s hard to make it look like it isn’t. For hiking boots, it’s better to stick to workwear, skatewear and similar styles when styling hiking boots. Straight leg jeans, baggier chinos, and comfier fits are the goal with hiking boots. Though, again, it is difficult to style these boots without looking like you’re a construction worker or going out for a hike.

Where to buy hiking boots

This is significantly harder, as many brands have hiking boots but not many are built for any style. The Alyx x Roa hiking boots, however, are a favorite for many. Though they’re difficult to find. Roa is also a good, albeit expensive, alternative for these boots.
