I like to look my best. Fashion and self-care are two things I prioritize, and I like to share my tips with others.
How to Make Your Eyes Look Bigger With Makeup
Are you wondering how to get that “huge eye” look with just a little makeup? Eyes hold a lot of beauty and they certainly communicate a lot without words (the whole spectrum of emotions!). Big eyes are classically sultry and mysterious, so learn how to up your makeup game with these tips to make your eyes really pop. These are the techniques that I use to make my eyes even more radiant.
How to Get that "Huge Eyes" Look
Here are the steps I follow when I'm going out for the night or on a date and really want to make my eyes pop.
First, you’ll want to apply concealer around your eyes to brighten the area. Dark circles or even makeup that hasn’t been removed properly around your eyes can add shadowing which can shrink your eyes or make them look smaller. Be sure to get your coverage all the way to the inner corner of your eyes.
2. Apply Light/Highlighter Eye Shadow
You are going to want to apply light eye shadow on your eyelids. This effect adds the ability for light to reflect and creates more space in this area of your face. It’s essentially highlighting the skin. This step is absolutely essential.
3. Apply Light Brown Eye Shadow
Next, you’ll want to take a light shade of brown (if you have a paler skin tone, this means you should go for something that is a little bit lighter than your skin tone). Add this lighter shade above the crease of the eye rather than in the actual crease. If you add the coloring above your crease (much like lining the outer parts of your lip rather than on top of your lip), you create the look and illusion of size and space.
Second, take an eye shadow that is a little bit darker still than your skin tone and add it to your lower lashes. This additional shadowing makes your eyes look larger and makes them pop. You will also want to add a thin line of either eyeliner or darker eye shadow on your lash line. If you go thicker, you shrink your eyes (actually) so avoid doing too much. Just make sure your application is very close to your lashes.
Tips Normal-Set-Eyes, Far-Set-Eyes, and Close-Set-Eyes
If your eyes are “normal set” or “far set,” you can make the eyeliner go all the way to the inside of your eyes. If you eyes are “close set” or closer together, do not make the eyeliner go all the way to your inner eyes. This line actually draws attention to this region and will make your eyes look closer together. To counter this issue, extend the eyeliner you are using just past your outer eye.
4. Curl Your Lashes
It’s important that you curl your upper lashes and use a great lash-lengthening mascara. Really embed it into your roots and run it to the tips. Make sure you carefully get the outer lashes and bottom lashes. You can bump your mascara wand back and forth (horizontally) to give a little added volume to your lashes.
If you really want to kick it up a notch, go for some false lashes. Don't be shy! Make sure you go for a natural look, however, and get a natural-looking pair. You do not want to overwhelm your eyes with lashes (thus hiding them).
5. Go for a Strong Brow
Eyebrows are everything! So make sure you nail this part. If you do your eyebrows correctly, you will surely make them look larger. If you do them incorrectly, you will make your eyes look small. Here’s how to do your eyebrows correctly:
- Draw an imaginary line from your nose to to the outer corner of your eye and extend that line until it intersects your eyebrow. This is how far out you want to go with your eyebrows when you’re filling them in.
- Draw an imaginary line from the center of your pupil through to your eyebrow. This is where the arch of your eyebrow should sit.
- Next, draw a line from the inner side of the eyebrow and align it with the outer bridge of your nose up to the inner edge of your brow. This is the boundary at which to stop shading your inner brow.
Salon Procedures That Will Give You Bigger Eyes
There are several salon procedures you can go for to make your eyes look bigger. They often have to do with eyelash enhancements. Consider the following options below:
Go for a Lash Lift
What is a lash lift? A lash lift is basically a perm for eyelashes and it lifts them higher. Lash lifts make your eyes really pop and will shorten your time getting ready in the morning. This means no need to curl your lashes! The results also last for 4 to 5 weeks and the procedure lasts about an hour. Most places will charge around $100 dollars for a lash lift.
Go for Lash Extensions
Lash extensions basically involve having lash extensions glued onto your regular eyelashes by a professional esthetician. These lashes, like any false lash, will fall off and need to get redone every 6 to 8 weeks. Again, this procedure costs around $100. The entire procedure takes about an hour. Lash extensions are a sure way to make your eyes pop and to draw attention to this feature of your face!
Plastic Surgery Options for Bigger Eyes
If makeup and the above options just aren’t doing it for you, there are procedures that you can undergo to enhance your eye size. Your eyes are determined by your genetic makeup and your skull shape, so at some point it’s important that you love what you’ve got, but if you do want to consider plastic surgery and other methods, there are a few things that can help you:
Botox is used to freeze the muscles around your eyes and essentially make you look more awake (no squinting or crows feet). If you do use Botox to enhance the tissue surrounding your eye, make sure that you do not overdo it. If you overdo it in this region, you might be stuck looking surprised which is not a look anyone is going for….
Eyelid Surgery or Blepharoplasty
Eyelid surgery is an option for some who want to change their eye shape or who have drooping eyebrows from natural aging. If you have a lot of excess skin over your eyelids, removing some of it will help your eye’s look bigger. The procedure is called a blepharoplasty and involves work by a plastic surgeon. Make sure to go with a good plastic surgeon who has pictures of their work as proof of their ability. You need to be happy with the final results of this procedure and it’s a big one, so be certain you trust your surgeon.
Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder
Okay, so I had to drop that line in there. All in all, being happy with what you’ve got is important. Beauty standards change across cultures and regions and throughout the decades. If anything, learning to love yourself first will bring you the most happiness. It’s important that you admire your strengths and learn to love your imperfects. Hope this helps!

I know the lash lift is becoming so popular now. I think I would try the curling of lashes and the lengthening mascara before going the professional route.
