How to Recover From a Hair Disaster (5 Ways)
I went to get a trim to my below-the-waist long hair to keep it healthy. I showed the beautician several pictures on how I wanted the layers to look like. She "accidentally" chopped off too much for the short layers and had to cut the rest to match (or else it would have looked like I had a tail)! I was beyond devastated.
I cried so much after that, so I decided to do some serious research to find out how to get my hair to grow back out that length - fast! I didn't want to wait years to see results! I wanted my hair back the way it was! The advice I'm giving you is based on my experience alone. This is how I was able to get my hair to grow long.
I am not a beautician or hair professional. Rather, I'm just a girl with long hair, but I did solid research that provided me with the results I wanted, so why wouldn't I share these tips and tricks?
1. Find encouragement.
Have you ever felt like your hair has stopped growing? This can be very discouraging, but don’t worry, because this article will wow you with a number of hair growth topics and tips which will help you grow your hair out in a fast and healthy way. Also, talk to your friends and family about what you're going through.
2. Don't despair.
We've all been there. You aren't alone! Find comfort in the presence of others. Have you ever experienced hair loss, excess hair, or a botched hair salon visit? Have you ever had a horrible hair cut and lost more hair than you ever intended to? If you’ve been there, read on, and place your story in the comments for all the readers!
3. Realize this devastation will pass.
It can be truly heartbreaking when a horrible hair disaster happens unexpectedly, especially if you were looking forward to fixing up your long hair that is now on the hair salon's floor. Remember, this too shall pass. You'll get through this!
4. Have hope in what's to come.
This article will help you realize this isn't the end of the world. Instead, use this advice and tips to come up with a battlefield plan! At least put on a happy face, and smile like you mean it, and before long, you will feel hope or acceptance (if you cannot grow out your hair out because of your health). Just fake it until you make it!
5. Get excited.
Excited to grow your hair out, but don’t know where to start? Do you want to meet with a beautician to brainstorm ways that you can let your hair grow out, but are not sure what to say? Think of all the things you would love to have in terms of your hair (length, layers, bangs, etc.) and make an appointment to discuss your options!
The Best Vitamins for Hair Growth
When researching this topic, the first thing I looked into was vitamins and discovered that if you over-do it on the vitamins or take the wrong mixture of vitamins and/or supplements, it can cause you to experience the counter effect. This is why you should take only the right mixture for you. Speak to your doctor before taking anything.
so you must take the right amount and the right mixture for you.
My first recommendation (which also helps your nails grow thick, strong, and long) of vitamins is: (1) Zinc and (2) Selenium.
Again, I am not a doctor, and you must be careful in what you mix, because some vitamins have the same ingredients.
This is the mixture I am on:
- Maxidene Vitamin (1 in the morning)
- L-Lysine 500mg (1 in the evening)
- Selenium 200mcg (1 in the evening)
- Zinc 50mg (1 in the evening)
- Vitamin E
- One multi-vitamin (any time of the day)
- Green Tea Mega T Capsule (1 in the morning)
- Vitamin E Conditioner in my hair (about once a week)
- Ginkgo Biloba 30mg (2 pills 3 times a day)
- “Hair, Skin, and Nails” (read the ingredients and do your research!) (1 pill 3 times a day)
- Saw Palmetto 450mg (1 to 2 pills 3 times a day)
Minimize Hair Damage by Avoiding Heat
Again, heat is the devil when you are trying to grow your hair out. If you have to use a blow dryer, use 2 diffusers and try to use the lowest setting. Here are some recommended products:
- Charles Worthington London – Take Aways; relax and unwind blow-dry straightening balm
- Sunsilk™ 24/7 Straighten-Up – Straightens and smooths hair
- Bed HeadÒ Superstar™ - Blow-dry Lotion for Think Massive Hair
- Matrix Sleek Look Smoothing System – Step 3 Lite Styling Crème
(Before letting a blow dryer "touch" your beautiful, clean hair, make sure you have some good product on your hair in order to protect it).
What hair products do you use? I'd love to know! Share your hair experiences in the comments below please!
The Two Best Vitamins for Hair Growth - Zinc and Selenium
Out of all the products, vitamins, etc that I recommend in this article, zinc and selenium are top choices.
Over all my research in medical journals and blogs, when it comes to hair growth, these two vitamins are the best. I strongly recommend that you add them to your daily vitamin intake.
What vitamins will help your hair grow?
Other Vitamins That May Help
Vitamin B Complex
Again, be careful in taking too many vitamins, the wrong mixture of vitamins, etc. Ask the pharmacist or do some research on your own before spending too much money on vitamins.
Often ordering the products online and/or in bulk can be cheaper. There are even products that have shampoo, conditioner, and vitamins combined in order to help your hair growth.
Do your research, but I would suggest trying the product once and seeing if you think it works before ordering mass quantities.
Hair Dye: The Damage of Coloring Your Hair
The other devil is hair dye. Using temporary hair dye is best if you must dye your hair, but don’t use permanent. There is also liquid hair dye for those few strands of grey, such as:
- Fanci-full™ Temporary Hair Color
Healthy Hair Products
What about hair products?
Products are important for hair growth. It is advisable to wash your hair every other day or more if you can.
When you brush your hair, don’t ever push thru the tangles. Instead use a non-tangle spray in the tangled area. Don’t brush thru it. Instead, wet the tangled part until the comb goes smoothly thru the hair. Use a detangle spray like the following:
- V05Ò Detangle and Shine; Restoring Daily Leave-in Conditioner
It works wonders!
Split End Treatments, Shampoo, Conditioner, and Leave-in Treatments
Some of the most important products are split-end treatments, proper shampoos and conditioners, and proper leave–in conditioners. Here are some of the products that I use:
- GarnierÒ FructisÒ Fortifying Shampoo – Fall Fight; for Falling, Breaking Hair
- GarnierÒ FructisÒ Length and Strength for Fragile, Hard-to-Grow Hair (Shampoo and Conditioner)
- GarnierÒ FructisÒ Leave-in Conditioning Cream – Sleek and Shine
- Bed HeadÒ Ego BoostÒ - Split End Mender; leave-in conditioner
- Redkin 5th Avenue NYC – Extreme; Anti-Snap; Leave-in treatment for distressed hair
Heat is the devil when it comes to growing your hair out. But if you have to straighten your hair, use a product such as:
- GarnierÒ FructisÒ Sleek and Shine Flat Iron Perfector Straightening Mist (don't spray a lot, because it comes on like hair spray, meaning it will be difficult to comb out)
- Be careful about pulling your hair back tight. You will get baby curls, because your hair will break off.
- Pulling the back of your hair up to the top of your hair and clipping it makes it look like you have a long pony-tail.
- Take care of your hair (like it’s your first born child)! This way you will only go to the beautician about twice a year at a maximum.
- Try to not go at all if you can avoid it. Only go if you see split or broken ends.
- When you see your beautician, spend at least ten minutes expressing the importance you feel towards your long hair. Take pictures of models or movie stars who have the hair you want.
- Tell them you only want one inch cut off at a maximum. If they state that more than that is needed, (1) you aren’t taking good enough care of your hair (2) go ahead and get it cut, but do not give them free rein; remind them you only want the damaged areas to be cut off, but (3) start a better regimen so that in the future you will not have to get that much cut off. Remember: every time you get your hair cut you have to grow it out.
The key to growing out your hair is keeping it so healthy that you do not have to constantly have to get it cut off.

Growing Long Hair
Home Remedies for Hair Growth
(1) Flip your hair upside down and up for two minutes. It gets the blood flowing and helps your hair grow.
(2) As much as you can, massage your scalp (gently) – when you condition, when you shampoo, when you are watching TV, etc. This is another way to get the blood flowing.
(3) As silly as this may sound, the best way I have found to grow my hair is getting goose bumps. It grows your hair. You can do this by thinking of a touchy feely moment in your life or watching some chick flick.
(4) Have patience!! Don’t run to the beautician because you’re bored or someone recommends it. Wait it out. Give it a year, and you will be shocked at the results you gain. Think about your long-term results and be patient!
(5) Wear your hair down as much as possible, because as I mentioned before, pulling it back in a tight bun can cause it to break.
(6) Drink one glass of warm Green Tea per day.
(7) Quite often you should do a deep conditioning treatment of sorts. You can buy these over the counter, or you can Google and see the many, many recipes online involving eggs and such. You can make them with food ingredients that you have on hand. Usually, a deep conditioner should be done about once a month.
(8) Try to stay out of the sun.
(9) Slightly pull back your hair when you sleep. If you toss and turn, you are liable to rip hairs out.
(10) Do more research! You may find things I haven’t, but I made a lot of progress with this little bit of information, so this is a good place to start.
In the end, do what makes you happy!!

You’re welcome miss Kelsey. Did you read the hub pages learning center at hub pages.? If I forget. I go back and read it again. I get and idea of what I am missing in a hub or if I added extra material in my hub.
Michele Kelsey (author) from Edmond, Oklahoma on May 29, 2018:
Thank you Ana Maria for your suggestions! I am glad you saw the doctor recommendation. I find it to be a useful addition to any health and beauty blog posts or articles (in this case, Hubs).
If you have another idea for an image to go in the "styling tips" I can replace the scissors with the new image. The scissors is just an image I found online on morguefile.com (a free place to get images to post in your content). Just let me know a few images I can try to find to put in that space. I love adding lots of high-quality, beautiful images, but many of them are not my original ones.
I am very happy that your checked out this hub and were able to give me constructive criticism.
Ana Maria Orantes from Miami Florida on May 28, 2018:
Good morning miss Kelsey. I am glad; You ask about your hub. You did a fantastic job. I like the information. It is great. I am glad you wrote double check with a Doctor. I like the pictures except the picture with the scissors. I suggest to buy a new scissors take a picture and replace the old picture with the new picture. Also, Argan oil is good for the hair. You need to check with sally beauty supply. Thank you.

Happy holiday to you also!! Wish I wasn't bedridden sick this week but you play the hand you're dealt. It's been nice to catch up with some of the hub community! :)

Thank you, it is very beautiful to own a long hair, but it need long time to grow the hair. So you can wear the hair extensions.
Michele Kelsey (author) from Edmond, Oklahoma on December 23, 2013:
Yes, this was my first hub which desperately needs edited. And of course, I wrote a few on beauty, but that is way off my niches. I don't know the topic of beauty enough to have that be my sole purpose in writing. I most certainly need focus and goals so I can get on track! I hope we can figure something out! :)
Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on December 23, 2013:
I just wanted to see what one of your earlier hubs looks like. You do write about a wide range of topics.....here is the good news....you write well enough to make money at this writing gig...we just have to help you to focus on a set of goals. :)
Michele Kelsey (author) from Edmond, Oklahoma on November 02, 2013:
Glad you enjoyed it. Those are cute hearts on your comment. How do you do that?

Mine is a bit past my bra line. I think you should grow it out. Just take really good care of it. Be very careful when it's wet, because that is when it is most fragile. If you take good care of it, you won't have to get the split or broken ends cut off as often. Just try your hardest to not make it have to be cut. Try some of the products I recommended. Also, be sure to use a split end protector for after you wash your hair. Try to avoid heat too. That REALLY damages your hair. Good luck! Michele
dianni on August 16, 2013:
how long is your hair
any more options on how to grow my hair out
dianni on August 16, 2013:
thanks yeah my mom said im not getting it cut because it long and pretty and takes to long to grow out about 2moths
thanks for advice
Michele Kelsey (author) from Edmond, Oklahoma on August 16, 2013:
It might be a sugar shock to get it cut that short. I would recommend only a couple of inches. You don't want to have any regrets and you can always cut more later if you want to. Best of luck! Michele

It sounds like you are on the right track. Just be sure to keep up with your ends from now on. Take good care of them, so that you don't have to get it trimmed too much. I think I was able to go 2 years without trimming, because I took really good care of my hair. Good luck! :) Michele

Just take really good care of it so you don't have to get it cut often. Also any blood flow techniques help - rubbing your scalp or getting goose bumps. lol

Michele Kelsey (author) from Edmond, Oklahoma on May 15, 2013:
Yes, I've heard wonders about Biotin, but with the vitamin mix I'm on now, I'm not going to try it. I stupidly dyed my hair a couple months ago, and now it's coming out in chuncks. I used permanent dye. Shame! Shame! Shame on me! Once the dye stops its work, hopefully my hair will stop doing that! :)
Kay Mitchell from California on May 14, 2013:
I take biotin that helps with hair, nails and skin. I know for some people, it's just simply genetics that make them have the hair they have but there are definitely lifestyle choices we can make to improve the health of our hair!
Michele Kelsey (author) from Edmond, Oklahoma on March 23, 2013:
That's funny! :) I'm glad you can look at the bright side! This is my first hubpage, so I am definitely still learning! :)
Larry Wall on March 22, 2013:
Thank you for your reply. I am really not concerned about going bald. It runs in the family, older brother, father, uncles, grandfather and great-grandfather and who knows how far back beyond that. Some of the women in my family have re-ceding hairlines. My sister had to be treated for cancer, and the chemo resulted in her losing her hair (has grown back), but we were out for lunch one day with our spouses and as the waitress looked at us, I just said, this is my sister, and added that baldness ran in the family. I added, "Our mother was bald."
I got some strange looks..
Michele Kelsey (author) from Edmond, Oklahoma on March 22, 2013:
Yes, I was focusing on women who wanted to grow their hair long. I am unaware of men's products or vitamins. You could shop around Walgreens or ask the Pharmacist. Sometimes just shaving it all off looks very nice for a man. Sorry I couldn't have been of more help for men. I only included the brands, because I'm on a budget, so someone else may be in my same shoes.
Larry Wall on March 21, 2013:
Being male and balding, I know of no products that will help men grow hair. This may be different for women who lose their hair because of medication or some traumatic event. I do not think the brand of vitamins make any difference.
