Just when you thought the dewy skin trend was winding down, enter “Yoga Skin”…
While everyone can agree on enjoying the radiant complexion that comes after a healthy workout, we prefer to achieve this without looking sticky, sweaty or oily.
If you have oily skin, following this tutorial will allow you to create a glowy complexion, without looking greasy. I’m loving the look above, featured on the Miss Pravala website, where it appears a sheer matte foundation was applied, complimented by highlighter in key areas. Before starting our tutorial to create a similar look, we must first tackle the question…
“What is Yoga Skin?”
This makeup technique was created by Sara Hill, a makeup artist based in the U.K. It's a glowy look that she says allows skin to look “lit from the inside”, and tutorials are slowly taking over Instagram! To create the look, she suggests mixing your foundation with a facial oil, plus an illuminator. Most recipes online look something like this: make a cocktail of 80% liquid foundation, plus 15% hydrating facial oil (such as argan oil), and 5% liquid highlighter.
If you have dry skin and would like to convert it to dewy yoga skin, you can get away with using the highly suggested liquid cocktail concoction. But what about women with oily skin, especially if you like to use powder foundation? Oily skin types have a tough enough time keeping liquid foundation in place, without adding MORE slick, shiny ingredients to the mix. This technique is all about creating a fresh, healthy looking complexion - but applying a greasy, light-reflective mixture amplifies pores and existing breakouts, which does not indicate healthy skin!
What’s worse, several online tutorials suggest massaging the mixture into skin using your hands, and even say to “push the mix into skin”. For those who have enlarged pores and acne, this method will be an absolute nightmare! Jamming oil-saturated foundation into pores, along with mica particles found in liquid highlighter, can cause deep-seeded cystic acne breakouts.
How to Create a Yoga Skin Makeup Look Using Powder Products
To find alternate application methods to create yoga skin, I’ve teamed up with Mattify Cosmetics; a vegan company who specializes in the best products for oily skin. Their entire line is focused on the creation of skincare and makeup that keeps your complexion shine-free for hours, without clogging pores. I’ve personally used their products for years, and since I’m stuck dealing with oily skin and acne woes, they’ve become my Holy Grail company!
Following these application tips and product suggestions will allow for a matte base that won’t clog pores or increase oil production, so you look glowy, not greasy.
STEP 1: Prep Skin
Prep skin using your usual routine. It also amps up your glow factor to use an exfoliating scrub that will whisk away any dead skin or pore plugs. Just be sure to rinse thoroughly with warm water after use.
After exfoliation, apply toner, your usual acne treatments, and a light weight moisturizer (try Mattify’s Incredi – Gel Moisturizer for Oily Skin, which balances oil production and reduces breakouts).
STEP 2: Time to Prime
Apply powder primer, which will act as your base layer to absorb excess oil. One of the few powder primers on the market is Mattify’s Transparent Powder for Oily Skin, which multitasks as primer AND setting powder – so you’ll be using it again in Step 5, to set foundation.
Why use a powder primer? Most gel and cream primers contain dimethicone (silicone), which can spell disaster for oily skin. This sticky ingredient lodges inside of pores, causing inflammation and breakouts.
Select a Mattify Powder in the appropriate option designed for your skin type (Original, ULTRA, or Sensitive). This is especially important to protect your pores from clogging, if you will be using liquid foundation in the next step. Use a fluffy powder brush or puff to apply the powder over your entire face – even eye lids, as this will prevent eye shadow from creasing.
STEP 3: Build Your Foundation
Apply your favorite foundation (liquid or powder) and blend well. Powder foundation works best if you don’t have many imperfections to cover, and are just looking to even out your overall skin tone. Select one without Bismuth Oxychloride (which can make skin itchy), and without mica (which can cause unwanted all-over shine).
Those with blemishes or scarring will probably opt for liquid foundation, as it offers more opacity. For best results, select one that’s oil-free and water based, as those types adhere to skin without clogging pores. The water in the formula also looks more natural than thick heavy foundations - which is perfect for a yoga skin look.
STEP 4: Blushing Beauty
Here’s the first step to creating your yoga glow! You know how skin gets a flattering rosy glow after exercise? That’s what you’re going to duplicate here, using a warm-toned blush.
Use a tapered powder brush to apply rose or peach colored blush onto apples of cheeks. Also, dust a barely noticeable amount on forehead and chin, to give the illusion of flushed skin.
Stay away from cool toned or bronze colors, as they create more of a contoured faux-tan than a pleasant flushed look.
STEP 5: The Set Up
After foundation and blush are in place, apply another dusting of Mattify Transparent Powder to your entire face, to set your makeup. Since the powder is clear, it allows blush color to show through, while setting makeup for long wear.
You’re left with a fresh, clean look, and pores appear minimized. The powder will also absorb oil for hours, preventing excess sebum from causing makeup melt-down. Avoid using any tinted powders for this step, as they can appear dull or sallow.
STEP 6: Time to Get Lit!
Now comes the fun part… creating the rest of your Yoga Glow!
Dip a flat fan brush into powder highlighter and tap away excess. Lightly dust the following areas with the brush: cupid’s bow, outer tops of cheeks, center of forehead, center of nose, and center of chin. Blend well with a clean brush, or with fingertips, to create a fresh glowy finish.
STEP 7: Shimmer-Eyes
When creating a yoga skin makeup look, you don’t need to worry about complicated steps like winged liner or false lashes, since you’re aiming to go au naturale.
Instead of heavy black liner, apply a medium brown liner very close to lashes. This helps add depth and dimension to eyes, without looking overly dramatic.
Next, apply a light brown eye shadow on inner crease, to add additional depth. Finish by adding a pale, shimmery eye shadow to center of lids. Try Mattify’s long lasting eye makeup in: Disco Sunset, Iced Apricot, Snow Bunny, or Earth Angel.
STEP 8: Going for Gloss
Finish off your look with a sheer peachy lip gloss, or a lightly tinted plumping gloss. If lining lips, opt for a nude pink color, which adds volume without looking obvious.
Skip super pigmented lipsticks and glosses with loads of brightly colored glitter, since you'll be going for a soft, natural look.
So there you go … a fresh, revitalized look that provides the same glow you get after a yoga workout!
If you plan take the traditional route to Yoga Skin by mixing a foundation cocktail, opt for a dimethicone-free foundation, and a facial oil that contains only noncomedogenic ingredients and acne-fighting ingredients.
