First a couple of facts about UGG boots. Why are we talking about UGG boots on a Hub that promotes American Choices? Because UGG boots are now owned by an American company. Yes! The classic Australian boot that is loved from around the world is owned by Deckers Outdoor Corporation, an American company that purchased the UGG Australia brand in 1995.

But Wait There is More to UGGs Than Surfing and Weddings

Thought there might be an end to Uggs and the invasion or touchpoints in our daily lives? Thought you heard it all with the Uggs for weddings? Well as the famous television commercial so aptly says "but wait there's more" - Uggs is slated to partner with a world-renowned shoe designer. If you are female and know anything about shoes, you know the name of this designer - Jimmy Choo. Jimmy Choo is well known in the world of women's shoes for styles that are exciting, classly, often very pricey and highly sought after. Here is the report from the Magazine at the WSJ:

"Limited-edition co-branded Jimmy Choo UGG boots will be in stores in October.

Decked out with two-toned khaki furniture, opaque mood lighting and brushed aluminum appointments."

I love Jimmy Choo shoes designs and while I don't currently own a pair of Ugg boots (I will confess I have the house slippers), and while I have lusted after Jimmy Choo, my shoe wardrobe lacks both of these brands and Uggs must know t and is seeking me out! Or does this sounds like the conspiracy theories and Uggs and JImmy Choo simply want to tap the checkbook of the aging babyboomer (yup - that is me!).

How to Clean and Care for your UGGs

The care and cleaning of your UGG boots is very simple but you must have the right tools and know how to effectively handle stains.

Do Clean Stains Immediately But Also Clean the Entire Boot

If a stain happens and life always seems to interrupt us in this manner so expect it and plan for it accordingly. Do know ahead of time the proper steps to handle a stain. A sponge and a suede brush work well. Remember to follow the handy tips I have outlined in the chart below. Essentially, you will clean the stain by not gently apply the sponge, the next step is to repeat until the stain is gone, then clean the entire boot and its pair.

You will be tempted to immerse the boot in a bucket of water - don't do this! This short cut can be harmful to your well crafted boot. Take the time to care for the boot properly and clean and allow to dry out of direct sun light.

Do Use a Stain and Water Repellent

This simple step will extend the life of your UGGs. This is available at most shoe stores or online at Amazon.

Do Keep Your UGGs Clean

If you attend to stain immediately, the time you devote to cleaning will be greatly reduced. Your UGGs will last you through several seasons and serve you well if you take the time to attend to stains immediately.

UGG Insoles

Do Replace Your Sheep Skin Insoles

One of the many great items about UGGs is the replacement insoles that are readily available. Do take advantage of this great accessory to extend the useful life of your UGG boots.

Do Take Your UGGs to the Dry Cleaner

This should be done no less than annually in my opinion. Yes, the dry cleaner will charge you more because UGGs are a type of natural leather / suede but the ability to deep clean your boots is a great option that you should plan for annually.

The Don'ts for The Care of Your UGGs

Perhaps as important as the Dos is the Don'ts for the care of your UGGs. Don't immerse in water - you will be tempted - remember my words of caution. Don't use a washing machine, don't use a dryer and don't dry in full sun light. And yes, I know the surfers will have to actively seek out shade but this is important. Drying in the shade will serve to extend the life of this natural material.

UGG Sells $712 Million of Sheepskin Footwear

Beyond the lifestyle reach of UGGs from the beach to the sun dress and now an integral part of major life events such as weddings, perhaps the best visual of breadth and scope of this famous brand can best be shown in the numbers:

"Last year, UGG Australia sold nearly $712 million of sheepskin footwear—more than Sam Adams sold beer ($415.1 million), Smith & Wesson sold guns ($334.9 million), the New York Yankees sold baseball ($375 million) and Marie Callender’s sold apple pie ($536 million)." source: Magazine.WSJ.com

Ugg Boots Originally for Surging

Uggs Started on the Beach with Surfers

The surprising launch of Uggs came from the love of Uggs from surfers. Bay Watch Pamela Anderson has been seen on the television series as a lifeguard donning the now famous sheepskins. Somehow that red swimsuit I believe could make anything look great! But look how natural sheepskin appears on the beach!

Beyond the Beach - Beyond the Weddings

Beyond the beach, beyond the weddings and while I haven't yet seen the Jimmy Choo re-design of the shoe or the shoe shop, I remain committed to Uggs for children. Look at the photo below and you will see an entire new generation who will be wearing this sheepskin phenomenon daily.

Hi Summerberrie,

Thank you very much!

UGGs are big business and huge for retail and for web traffic - amazing.

This hub was the practical side - I firmly believe taking care of our possessions is as important as limiting our possessions and valuing our relationships more than possessions.

I am learning to like the sundress look. After learning about these boots and the air circulation they offer, I have a better understanding. By the time it is no longer fashionable - then I will like the look! Alas always a day late!

These boots take care and do demand a little bit of special care. I have been hesitant to try these because of the care issue so it was helpful to me to research this before I invest in these unique boots.
