White teeth, clean mouth, no plaque and no tartar
Some eight years ago I went on a health kick in order to lose weight and regain some energy. As I explored my options, I came across a site that said swishing sesame oil in your mouth would make your teeth white. As I had yellow teeth with stains, and as the peroxide route (the route that dentists use) was not for me, I was intrigued. So I was keen to try it. Within three or four days of swishing sesame oil in my mouth, the stains vanished and my teeth were a shade or so whiter, plus there were other benefits.
The removal of hard dental plaque
After some three weeks of mouth swishing (for a long 15 minutes every day), I noticed that my teeth no longer had the hard nodules of plaque that were a nightmare every time I visited a dental hygienist. In fact, a week later, when I was due for my quarterly check up, I mentioned to Kate (that was her name) that I thought I had managed to avoid getting plaque. She confirmed that I had not an inch of plaque in my mouth.
You really do need to do it for fifteen minutes a day, though. I've noticed that if I lessen the time and do it only for five minutes a day, while it will whiten my teeth, it will not remove the tartar.
Getting rid of that horrible taste in your mouth
I don’t know about you but there are mornings I wake up with the most dreadful taste in my mouth – even when I had faithfully brushed long and diligently the previous evening. After a few weeks of mouth swishing, my mouth simply didn’t taste awful anymore. It didn’t matter what I ate or drank in the evening, and those times I simply dropped into bed without brushing my teeth (horrible confession, I admit), my mouth didn’t have a terrible taste in the morning either. Of course, I do not make a habit of not brushing my teeth every evening!
Removing toxins from the mouth – better gum health
When swishing the oil around one’s mouth, it loosens the bacteria and other harmful microbes on the teeth, tongue, and gums. Oil is a sticky substance and ‘picks’ up things in a way water does not. In any event, the oil will be full of toxins and yukky things once you have being swishing or a while, so you should spit it out when you are done. Do not gargle as there is the danger that the bacteria that is now within the oil could infect your throat.
A clean mouth makes for better heart health
I will never know whether it was the ‘oil pulling’ or some other natural remedy I was using during the time, but when I started swishing oil for 15 minutes each day, my teeth became whiter and whiter, plus I felt better, had more energy, and found the discipline to drop weight very easily.
It would be easy to think that it was all coincidence except that there are now several studies that indicate that if one’s mouth is unhygienic, it affects the heart. And, of course, if your heart is affected, you tire more frequently. So I don’t think it’s a stretch.

Why sesame oil and not olive and/or other oils
Over the years I have tried various other oils. While the oils will remove tartar / plaque just as well, they don’t appear to have the same whitening effect that sesame seed oil does. The general oils recommended are coconut oil and/or olive oil. I have seen no evidence that olive oil whitens the teeth to the degree that sesame seed oil does. I also have to admit that I haven’t tried coconut oil as I only buy extra virgin organic coconut oil and that is too expensive for me to spit out. Instead I use coconut oil for my skin, my hair, and a teaspoon each day to keep in good health.
Generally in the natural health world, only olive oil, coconut oil, and sesame seed oil are seen as oils of value. This is probably not true as all oils have their own particular values. In my opinion, from experience, I have found sesame seed oil to be the best for oil pulling.
Oxygenation of oil in mouth
While some advocate that you use one or two teaspoons of oil, I would recommend against that this because, as you swish, the oil oxygenates. This means it transforms from an oil substance to one full of air (oxygen). It is probably the oxygen that whitens your teeth and kills the germs. After about a minute, your mouth feels far fuller than it did when you started swishing the oil, so unless you have a humongous mouth, you are going to have to spit half of it out. Sesame seed oil is a bit pricey so, depending on your pocket, you might not want to waste it by spitting out half of it before you’ve completed your task.
Properties of sesame seed oil
Sesame oil has been used for thousands of years for various reasons. Firstly it is a healthy food that is eaten, known or its high content of essential fatty acids. It also contains various minerals like copper, manganese, calcium and magnesium. In addition, it has been used to moisturize the skin and protect against sun damage to some degree. It also has Vitamin E , B complex and D.
Oil pulling is not a panacea for all ills, and its benefits are limited to the mouth and teeth.
As with many who wish to promote sales of products, what they sell suddenly develops a hosts of miracle abilities. There is no scientific evidence for sesame seed oil having any ability to heal cancer or promote health in other ways.

How to swish with sesame seed oil
Take half a teaspoon of oil and put into your mouth. Swish from left to right for fifteen minutes. Also front to back. When the fifteen minutes are up, either spit into basin or lavatory. If the basin, run hot soapy water afterwards to ensure that oil is completely removed from basin. Rinse mouth with warm water then brush teeth. Your mouth will feel wonderful.
Benefits of white teeth
Teeth naturally yellows with age so keeping one’s teeth as white as possible naturally makes one appear younger. In addition, there is nothing more unattractive than someone who opens their mouth and enormous yellow stains or brown spots show up on the teeth. It sends a message of slovenliness and an unhygienic person.
