I constantly research and try new remedies related to skincare and haircare. I like to share it with everyone facing similar beauty concerns
Blackheads are very common but can be challenging to remove. Before we discuss how to remove it, let's first get to know what is a blackhead and how it occurs. It is a very mild form of skin acne caused due to the build-up of oil and bacteria in the hair follicles of your skin. When this is exposed to air, it reacts and turns dark which you see as blackheads. They are very annoying and do not get removed even after using a face wash. People with oily or combination skin are more prone to this but it can happen to anyone.
Causes of Blackheads
First of all, you need to know that blackheads are not because of lack of hygiene as someone who regularly uses facewash can also develop blackheads. However, some common factors lead to dirt, oil, and bacteria build-up, which causes blackheads.
There are some things which you can do yourself at home to reduce and prevent it further.
- Use a cleanser/face wash to clean your face twice daily.
- Always apply moisturizer and sunscreens of light-weight formula with less oil content. There are many gel-based/spray sunscreens available nowadays. Always use every product according to your skin type.
- Never sleep without removing your make-up. Always remove your make-up and then use a face wash/cleanser followed by serum, night cream, or moisturizer.
- Always apply a primer before applying any make-up. If you do not use primer, it will cause your make-up to get clogged in your pores and increase dirt and bacteria build-up.
- Exfoliate your skin every 2-3 days or as required.
- Drink plenty of water and follow a healthy diet. This helps a lot in maintaining the health of your skin.
It is safe to remove blackheads at home but, if it is extremely deep-rooted or none of these remedies work after trying it for more than 1-2 months, then it is recommended to consult a dermatologist for further investigation and treatment.
Also, even when all these remedies are natural, it is always recommended to do a patch test before using to avoid allergic/skin reactions.
Home Remedies to Remove Blackheads
While mentioning home remedies for removing blackheads, I have often seen everyone squeezing their blackhead with their fingers. This is not at all advisable. It might pull out the dirt, but in the long run, it will cause bacteria and dirt to deposit deep inside the root of the follicle and also cause skin damage. Therefore, please do not try this at all. If you want to get rid of all the blackheads and whiteheads, just follow these simple tips and the above-listed preventions. These remedies might not remove all the blackheads instantly in just one use, but you will get rid of all of them if you include these steps in your skincare routine.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is very effective in treating various skin conditions. It provides deep cleaning and prevents oil and bacteria build-up in your skin which is the main cause of acne, pimples, blackheads & whiteheads. There are many face wash and cleansers for acne-prone skin which has tea-tree oil. However, if you find those very costly, you can mix 2-3 drops of essential oil in any facewash and use it. Essential oils are very concentrated and also quite affordable. One bottle will last you at least 5-6 months, depending upon your usage.

Facial Massager/Cleansing Brush
A facial brush is a great option for cleaning your skin pores. It provides much better cleaning than just using your fingers. You can easily purchase facial brushes/massagers online. There are also many face washes with a facial brush attached to the bottle.
How to Use: Just apply any facewash/cleanser on your face and gently massage every portion of your face in a circular motion. Try to be very gentle while using this as you can damage your skin if you are too harsh with the brush.
Charcoal Peel-off Mask
Activated charcoal is used a lot these days for skin deep-cleaning. This is a very effective ingredient used for removing impurities and is nowadays included in every skin product. Charcoal is known for its lightening and brightening properties and charcoal peel-off masks are used for removing blackheads. However, it can be harsh for the entire face and might damage your skin so, it is only recommended to use it on your nose. Charcoal nose peel-off strips are extremely effective in removing blackheads and whiteheads. After removing the strip from your nose, you can see whiteheads on that strip. This method will be more effective if you first steam your face/nose. Steaming allows the pores to open up which will help you to easily pull out the blackheads.
Steaming Along with Exfoliation
Exfoliation is very necessary and should be done once every 2-3 days or as per your skin requirement. If you are using readymade scrubs from the market, always choose scrubs based on clay or charcoal. If you do not prefer those, you can also prepare DIY scrub at home.
Below is the list of the 3 most effective scrubs for your skin. You can choose anyone according to your skin type but always remember to do a patch test before using.
- Coffee & Honey: Mix the coffee powder and honey and make it into a thick paste and use it.
- Tomato & Sugar Powder: Cut a tomato in half and dip the base of the tomato (the inner portion) on sugar powder and rub it on your skin gently in a circular motion.
- Brown Sugar & Honey: Instead of coffee powder, mix brown sugar and honey into a paste and use it. Make sure to grind the sugar so that it doesn't hurt your skin.
If you exfoliate after steaming, it will be more effective and ensure proper cleaning of your skin.
Clay masks are known to remove stubborn grease and dirt from your pores providing deep cleaning. Regular usage of clay masks will help to keep your skin clean and smooth and prevent any kind of build-up in your skin. For best results, use the clay mask once every week. If you do not wish to use readymade clay masks from the market, you can mix fuller's earth (Multani mitti) and kaolin clay powder into a paste and apply it to your face. If you have dry skin, mix these ingredients with curd or add 3-4 drops of almond oil. Always use moisturizer after applying masks.
I found all these remedies very effective and if you include all of them in your daily skincare routine, I guarantee that you will never face the problem of whiteheads and blackheads and will get rid of this problem. Try these remedies for at least a month and let me know the results.
