White hair can be a very stunning look, but how can it be achieved? Unfortunately, you probably can’t buy box kits for white hair from your local pharmacy, but there are still ways to ensure that you get that wonderful bright white hair that you’re looking for!
Make Sure Your Hair is in Good Condition
Before bleaching and/or using dye removal products on your hair, it is very important to get it in the best condition possible - if your hair is already damaged then these chemicals may worsen it.
Leading up to dying your hair white, you could try using deep conditioning products for a few weeks. You should also wait a few days between applications of dye removal/bleaching/toning products to let your hair recover - it's worth it in the long run!
Lightening your hair at home
You may not be able to afford the time or the money of going to a salon - it is understandable that many people want to achieve this look from their own homes. As long as you are careful and know what you are doing, it can be possible to get lovely-looking dyed white hair from home. White hair can also be used as a base for all-over pastel-coloured dyes and cool dip-dyes!
Dye Removal & Bleaching
If you have dyed hair, you may want to use a dye removal product such as ColourB4 or Elimin8 to bring it back to the lighter shade underneath. Make sure you double-check that the dyes you've used before don't contain silicone if you do this, as they may not remove as well or at all.
In order to get your hair white, you must first get it to a light blonde shade. This is achieved by bleaching the hair - it is best to take your time and bleach multiple times at a lower-strength, so you may want to look into bleach bathing your hair as this is the least damaging method. If you prefer, many high street pharmacies sell box kits to dye hair blonde.
The lighter blonde you can get your hair, the brighter the white will be, but it really is worth making sure that you take things slow so that you don't cause too much damage - this way it'll look better when you're done!
Using A Toner
Your light blonde hair may be orangey, brassy or gingery in tone. This is where the toner's job comes in. Toners are a purple shade - this might seem strange to you, but the purple balances out the brassy yellow tones that make your hair look more blonde than white.
The best way to use toner is to apply only a small amount for a short amount of time and do repeat applications - not only can you give your hair a break in between (if you have the patience), but this avoids any chance of accidentally giving yourself a purple rinse!
You could do a test on a small, hidden section of your hair with the toner in order to experiment with timings and/or amounts. Remember that you should always be strand testing all hair products before using them, anyway - just in case you have an allergy.
Toners such as Manic Panic’s Virgin Snow (a very popular choice), or Special Effects’ Mixer/Toner should remove the yellowy look from your blonde hair and get it to the white colour that you are looking for, but there are many other brands to choose from on the market.
Keep It White
Now that you’ve used so many products on your hair you’ll want to keep it nourished with a good conditioner, but this can come hand in hand with brightening your white hair even further! Purple shampoos and conditioners that are designed for blondes will further remove any yellowish tint still lingering, and you can be keeping your hair in lovely condition.
An Extra Tip!
If you want your white hair to last then a great tip for getting the toner to stick for longer is to rinse it out with a mixture of cold water and white vinegar – both of which will help keep your colour in place and looking lovely!
