The Pear Shape
A pear shape body does not necessarily mean you are over-weight or heavy. Women with pear shaped bodies come in all weights and heights. To be classified as a pear shape, your body's biggest measurement will be in the hips, followed by the rib cage/chest then the waist. Many women confuse this with the hourglass figure because they are quite similar. The hour glass figure, however, has the hips and the chest being the same measurement (or close to) in size.
An example of a pear shaped body's measurements would be :
Chest : 34 inches - Waist : 29 inches - Hips : 44 inches
In pear shaped bodies, the measurement of the hips tend to be 10 or more inches bigger than the waist measurement, while the waist is slightly smaller than the chest. A good rule of thumb is to look at your body and be able to tell most of your weight is carried in your hips and legs, while the least weight is carried in your upper body.
A few famous women who have this body type are : Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Lopez
Many women with pear shaped bodies tend to have smaller sized busts and find it difficult to find shirts that wont draw away from the hip area. The idea is to draw attention to the shoulders and waistline which will give the body more of an hour glass figure. You want to avoid tops that are too long or too short. You want to draw attention up top so look for shirts that have dressed up necklines, wider neck holes (that drape over the shoulders), contrasting colors with the darkest color cutting at the chest or into the waist and tapering waist line tops are great as well! If you are like me and don't like to wear tight fitting tops, but rather looser ones, here are some great tops that will look great on any pear shaped body! --->
- Banded bottom tops : Evens out the body, hides bulging
- Shark bite tops : Flows the chest into the hips
- Poncho Tops : A nice cover up that sits above the hips
- Baby doll tops : Usually gathered below the chest to make it look larger
Not all women are made for skinny jeans! In fact, they are designed to give "skinny" women more curves so if you already have them, you don't need the extra attention! They tend to only look good on upside down triangle shapes (large breasted, small waist & hips), box shapes (boy body) and hour glass shapes. So avoid skinny jeans and leggings all together!
What you want to look for in bottoms is something that will elongate the lower half of your body while slimming it out. High waist jeans look great on a pear shape with a short, tight fitting top. You can find these in boot-cut, flare and full blown bell bottoms. Another great kind is just standard boot-cut jeans. Paired with a nice pair of heels, they will make your legs look long and lean! You want to avoid light washed jeans and ones that have small pockets. Look for jeans in darker washes with bigger back pockets. Jeans without back pockets will make your butt look very round and make it stand out more. Also, avoid washes that are light on the thighs and butt and darker everywhere else. These will make you look heavier than you actually are. Stay away from skinny, low rise and boyfriend jeans as these are made to draw attention to and widen the hips and legs.
Things to look for when jean shopping :
- Darker washes
- Larger back pockets
- Flares & boot-cuts
- Larger zipper (higher waist jeans)
- Larger front buttons
- Higher rise in the back, lower in the front
