For some women it's shoes, but for me it's always been handbags. From the time I was a teenager, I've been obsessed with buying and collecting handbags. There's just something about them that I couldn't pass up. When I saw a cute one at the store or online, I just had to have it. And I did. Until the next time when I saw another cute one. So I got that one too. Soon enough I had shelves upon shelves of them, yet whenever I saw another one that caught my interest, I would automatically buy it as well. For me, handbags were like pringles because you couldn't have just one, or two, or three..
Now, I'm a young woman interested in the latest fashion and trends, so sometimes I would get handbags to match clothing and shoes that I already owned. You know the so called fashion rules, the handbag is supposed to match the belt and the shoes. I don't always follow that rule, but when I saw a handbag that matched a pair of shoes that I had, well that's just another excuse to get it right? Yes! It's pretty much fair to say that I know have handbags that can easily match all of my outfits and shoes but the problem is that I don't use them. Huh?!
I was recently reorganizing my closet and trying to tidy up when I realized I have been using the same handbag since the beginning of the year. That's right, the exact same bag all nine months of this year. Yet I have bought enough new bags just this year that I could easily switch them at least every month if not more often. Why don't I switch bags? Well, because I love the bag I have now, it matches every outfit I wear because it's cream colored with multi-color monograms all over it so it pretty much goes with everything (it's Dooney and Bourke). It's just the right size to fit all my stuff yet it's not obnoxiously big. There's just something about it that I want to keep it around. We've been through a lot together this year and it's comforting to have it with me. Well, what about all those other handbags I purchased, what's going to happen to them?
I was thinking about this last night when I was bored and doing some online shopping. Sure enough I was on the handbag page and just about to order a new bag when I stopped myself just in time. Do I really need it? Like really need it? It was a hard no. Mainly because I had a half dozen that could pass for its twin but more likely because I knew deep down I wasn't really going to use for awhile anyways. It would just sit there on my shelve with all the others waiting for its turn to be used, which knowing me could take years. And the justification that I didn't have a handbag in exactly this shade of blue just couldn't cut it anymore. I knew I had it in this shade of blue. And in the next three shades lighter and darker so there goes that excuse.
I realize I have what the kids are calling #FOMO these days. It means fear of missing out. I'm afraid that if I don't buy the handbag I want at the exact time I want it that it'll sell out and then what's going to happen? I'll never have that bag in my life. Kind of dramatic when you're talking about handbags, but it's a fact of life and I know a lot of ladies will back me up about this. It is very true that if a handbag or any item for that matter, is super popular it will sell out. Now, this doesn't mean it's the end of the world because they will most likely reorder it and restock it again. But there is the possibly that the stores won't do that and then you know you've missed out for good. Your only hope now is maybe finding it on Ebay or Amazon if you're lucky.
The thing I realized is that maybe it's okay that it sold out because I never really needed it anyways. In the back of my mind, I knew it would be tossed along with all the others waiting their turn to be used. What does that tell me? That I didn't really need it to begin with, otherwise I would use it right away. I really admire people that buy things and use them right away because that goes to show that they actually needed those things and didn't just buy them for the heck of it. When it comes down to it, I think a woman only needs about five handbags to be completely satisfied. Those would be a large tote for those days when you need a lot of stuff or are traveling. Another large bag that is slightly smaller for those "I'm carrying my life around in my handbag today" days. A medium shoulder bag for everyday. A small bag for days when you don't need a lot of stuff. And a clutch or wristlet for date night when you just need the essentials like your ID, some cash, and maybe a lipstick or two. Those are needs though, and every woman knows when she's buying something whether that's a want or a need. Do I need that handbag? No. Do I want it? That's a hard yes but I'm gonna be responsible and say no this time.

I love this article. Until 2016 I enough hand bags to accommodate a tribe of women, lol. Then I went through a group for organizing and down sizing your entire home. Now if I want one a have to part with 2. It really makes you think more about what you really need. I have not regretted or missed a single handbag that I got rid of. Thank you, I enjoyed reading your article.
