Lip Balm

For lovely lips and lipstick that goes on smooth, each day or night when you brush your teeth, always brush your lips to loosen any dry flakes. This will create a smooth palette for applying your favorite lip balm. By wearing lip balm at bedtime, you may not need to wear any moisturizing lip base under your favorite lipstick when you're ready to leave the house the next day.

Some experts suggest that you use a medicated lip ointment if you tend to suffer from cold sores or blisters around the mouth area. Check out various brands at the grocery or drug store and read the labels to find out if it will benefit you.

You can purchase color tinted lip balms for day wear which work well and some contain sunscreen.

How to Balance Lipstick with Eye Makeup

The general rule is, if you highlight your mouth, then the rest of your face should have only minimal makeup application using light, neutral colors.

Lip Liners. I do not recommend a lip liner because it always looks too obvious and distracting on the face. If you must use it, then make sure it matches your lip color exactly or the effect will be clownish or theatrical.

Minimize a large mouth by choosing a matte lipstick in pale, neutral tones such as pink, beige, or peach tones.

For thin lips, glossy, shiny or metallic lipsticks work best but choose neutral tones, such as pink, beige or any light color. Do not use dark colors or matte lipsticks because they will call undue attention to your thin lips.

Large, full lips can be highlighted with bold matte color or with light glossy colors, it's really up to your own preference. However, you may want to keep the rest of your makeup toned down and minimal, to not compete with your mouth area.

For medium-sized lips, go ahead and use your favorite color and try different textures, such as glossy, shiny or matte or somewhere in between.

For day wear, these pretty coral, pink and neutral tones would compliment any complexion.

Only use bold colors if your personality is equally as bold. Keep the rest of your face neutral to avoid a clownish effect.

Insider Advice

Your age matters. Yes, it does matter the lipstick choices we make as we grow older. Bold, metallic blue, purple and black lipstick colors will emphasize the mouth and your face. The advice is, if you have aging skin or skin that is not at its best, then steer clear of any bright, metallic, or bold colors.

Hot weather care. During the hot summer months and your house gets very hot, your lipsticks will begin to melt and become unusable. The advice is to store all stick forms of your lip color in the refrigerator to stop them from melting down. Most liquid lip colors that are applied with a sponge tip applicator may become too thick and unusable if you store them in the refrigerator, so keep those products wherever you normally store them.

Short on Time but Need a Dash of Color?

When you simply do not have any time for makeup yet can't face the world with a completely bare face, then this information is for you. All you need are a pair of dark sunglasses and a splash of color on your lips and you’re out the door to dash around town. Just like that scene from the movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's" starring Audrey Hepburn. Her character, Holly Golightly, is late for an appointment and must be ready in minutes. She puts on a hat, dark glasses and swipes her lips with a gorgeous streak of color and she is out the door in no time flat.

If you're short on time, all you need is a pair of dark glasses and red lipstick and you're out the door in minutes.

Avoid the Dreaded Lipstick Color Transfer

No one likes to see lipstick marks on a coffee cup when they're out in public. It just looks messy and embarrassing. I used to wipe the cup with a napkin each time I took a sip but I found another way that works a bit better. When you’re out dining on a date or with friends, make sure to blot your lipstick on a napkin or a tissue from your purse prior to eating or drinking. This should eliminate most of the lipstick and stop the color transfer onto cups or glasses.

The same with lipstick getting on your teeth. Blot your lipstick to remove excess. Some experts suggest putting a swipe of petroleum jelly on your teeth to stop lipstick transfer during the day. You can use your finger and insert it in your mouth and remove it quickly to see if lipstick residue is on the inside of your lips. However, this may remove lipstick you want to keep on your lips and may cause gaps in color and you have to reapply it.

Creating the Perfect Lipstick Look

Now you can bring it all together. The general rule is to highlight only one feature on your face so they don't compete with one another.

Highlight only your eyes, and then choose neutral blush and lipstick colors in pink or beige tones so the eyes are in focus.

Highlight only your lips, by choosing a bright bold color for your lips and keep the rest of the face either neutral, or color coordinate the effect for a monochromatic look. For example, if you love burgundy eyeshadow hues, then choose a plum lip gloss to enhance the eyeshadow colors.

For a dramatic look for a night on the town, you can use dark smokey colors around the eyes, a deep rich color on the lips and only a hint of blush so the eyes and lips are the focal points.

For daytime, you can skip the full face makeup and just put a splash of color on your lips and you're all set to take on your day.

Notice how the violet colors enhance her eyes and lips to create a monochromatic effect. Her cheeks are kept light and neutral to avoid a clownish look.

Go for the drama for that special night out on the town with dark smokey eyes and ruby red lips. The blush is very pale to highlight the skin tone and not compete with the heavy eye and lip colors.
