3 Gangster Fedora Hats Worn By Celebrities

History of Gangster Hats

Gangster Hats are back in style and as popular as ever. Is it because of all the celebrities wearing gangster hats? I think this has played a big part in the reemergence of these classic hats. Although there are many types, one of the most popular styles is often referred to as the Gangster Fedora Hat.

They were first introduced in the late 1800's and worn by the upper class depicting a sign of wealth. Then around the 1940 cinema era, stylish Fedora hats were worn by movies most famous detectives and gangsters. Which then caused them to just be referred to as Gangster Hats.

One of the most popular stars to wear this popular hat was the legendary Humphrey Bogart. But now there are numerous celebrities(both men and women) wearing this once again popular gangster hat. For instance, stars like Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Ving Rhames, Angelina Jolie and one of the newest celebrities is Matt Bomer or better known as Neal Caffrey from the hit show White Collar .

The Black Hat

The black gangster hat is probably the most popular and easily represents the wrong side of the law.

The always stylish Neal Caffrey hat worn on the hit show White Collar is more often than not in that classic black, which of course fits his character's darker side.

The black fedora is also often worn as a dress hat or to complete that classic look seen on popular shows like White Collar or Mad Men. This style is one that I love seeing make a comeback. Whether its worn for a dress hat or just a casual night out on the town, it has become part of the fashion world for men and women.

Besides, who wouldn't want to look as cool as one of the hottest criminals around, Neal Caffrey?

The Classic in White

Now if you wanted to be a smooth criminal, you might choose a one in white, just like those made popular the 1920's.

Whether you are looking for the more casual straw fedora or a little dressier felt hat, you are sure to be the talk of the room.

You will find they are available in a variety of styles and price ranges. For instance you can find a cheaper costume hat to a custom Fedora Gangster Hat, where the price might just scare you! But if you ask, many would say a good hat is really hard to put a price on.

It will be easy to find one that fits your style and your budget. You might decide you need more than one to fit into your wardrobe.

Fedora Gangster Hats

The Gangster Fedora Hat is probably the most popular style worn by men and women of all ages. But in the early days one of the fedora, you were supposed to be able to tell something about its wearer by how they wore it. For example if the hat was tilted and brim flipped in various ways, it created a rebellious or dangerous effect. Also how a person handled their hat portrayed a sense of class and style. If you watch Neal Caffrey on White Collar you will start to see his hat tricks and figure out it really fits his smooth con man persona.

With the popularity of the classic hats today and considering the wide range of people wearing them, you probably will not find the rules of etiquette to be quite the same, say as when they were worn by such celebrities of the early 1900s like Humphrey Bogart in "Casablanca " or even one the most infamous of "Gangsters", Al Capone.

You don't have to be famous or wealthy to add one or more to your wardrobe. With the variety of colors, design choice and price range, you can find one that is perfect for you.

What's Your Favorite Celebrity Gangster Hat

Ryan Palmer from In a Galaxy far, far away on June 28, 2012:

These look much better than those damn baseball caps!

Levertis Steele from Southern Clime on November 24, 2011:

I wish more men would wear more gangster styles, keep the sports caps for casual activities, but gangster hats are great for dressier outfits. London Fog type coats look better with gangster hats than caps.

Ladies always look nice with gangster hats, especially the Fedoras.

The younger guys who are wearing those caps every way except straight just might improve with a hat with more class, if only occasionally. :)

I like the wide brims too, not sure I could pull off the feathers and flowers though. But hats can be so much fun and they really add to your ensemble!

Mrs. J. B. from Southern California on March 18, 2011:

OH I just love hats! I like the white gangsta hat the best. I prefer wide brims. My favorite hats are the ones worn during the Edwardian era... Feathers, flowers, big. YUP love it.

MyMastiffPuppies (author) on August 18, 2010:

I love the hats too, I wish my oldest son would wear one but I think I would have better luck getting my 7 yr old to wear one. He's a little fireball! Thanks for stopping by!

Audrey Kirchner from Washington on August 09, 2010:

Totally cool hats! My son would look good in one of those.
