How to Make Baby Headbands and Girls Hair Clips Using a Round Knitting Loom
Round Knitting Loom
So, I've just now discovered a neat line of knitting looms by a company called "Knifty Knitter." I haven't knitted since I was in 7th grade when my mom and I took up knitting dish cloths. It didn't last long and that was my only experience.
Until now.
I've found that Hobby Lobby carries all different sized looms that make knitting so easy that anyone can do it. There are looms to make almost anything--scarves, purses, socks, beanies, and flowers. The flower loom caught my eye because of all the flower headbands and hair clips I've been making lately. The directions show flowers made from using raffia ribbon--you know the stuff...raffia is what hula skirts are made from. It feels almost like paper but can be woven like straw.
ANYWAY! When I saw the loom, my mind veered far from raffia, thinking of all the different possibilities of different kinds of flowers I could make with this loom!
Brown Flower Hair Clip
This brown beauty was my first attempt at making a flower on my new loom. I decided to use the skinniest ribbon I had on hand and followed the directions precisely. Well, except for not using raffia ribbon.
Once my flower was completed, I sewed and glued it onto a little clip. I'm not sure if I'll let my daughter have it (she doesn't wear much brown), sell it, or keep it for myself. I think it would look good with some kind of up-do.
Blue Beaded Flower Hair Clip
My next attempt was this blue one. The ribbon I used isn't really ribbon and isn't really yarn either. Since I used the same for the center as I did the petals, I decided the center area needed a little more definition, so I added beads.
And after sewing and gluing it to a hair clip, it was finished. This one has already been claimed by my daughter.

Blue and Brown Flower Baby Headband
My next attempt was to use both ribbons--more blue petals yet with a brown center. I could see a sweet little one wearing this on a headband so that's exactly what I did with it.
Purple Baby Headband
I had lots of purple netting and decided to see what netting would look like in place of ribbon. I had a large piece but not long enough to completely wrap the loom with and I didn't want to cut it in strips and have to tie the pieces together. So I took my scissors and rounded the corners of my piece of netting. Then, I began cutting, leaving a 2-inch wide strip. Instead of ending at the other end, I simply rounded the corner and kept cutting. This way, I'd just keep cutting in a circular fashion without ever having to end until I had enough.
I used purple ribbon in the center and then worked my flower off the loom just as the directions read. I left some of the petals looped; others I snipped to make two separate petals from one. This one also had to be sewn onto a baby headband.
