Five Products Middle-aged Women Cannot Live Without

Aging is inevitable. No one is immune and even the wealthy cannot delay the process forever. And with aging comes wisdom. Right? Many women struggle with this succession, but my new philosophy is – embrace it!

As Coco Chanel said, "Nature gives you the face you have at twenty; it is up to you to merit the face you have at fifty."

A good moisturizer can take away the tight feeling that accompanies dry skin, and it can lessen the appearance of wrinkles.

A good moisturizer can take away the tight feeling that accompanies dry skin, and it can lessen the appearance of wrinkles.

I've heard a hairdresser say, "It's all about the product", so here are five products I cannot live without while I joyfully, yet somewhat hesitantly, age.

1. Face Moisturizer. This is a no brainer. According to,
"Moisturizers are extremely beneficial to older women as dry skin is a common sign of mature skin. A good moisturizer can take away the tight feeling that accompanies dry skin, and it can lessen the appearance of wrinkles.”

My personal favorite: TimeWise Age Fighting Moisturizer by Mary Kay

Their claim: TimeWise® Age-Fighting Moisturizer is formulated with an exclusive dream humectant blend, plus powerful antioxidants that help guard against free radicals to help skin look and feel smooth and radiant.

Why I like it: It's light weight and non-greasy. The price is really quite comparable to in-store brands of similar quality. This product is just so easy to use and my face drinks it up.

2. Whitening Toothpaste. I think nothing makes an individual look older than graying or yellowing teeth. Every 6 months, I have my teeth cleaned at the dentist, and at home I use a good whitening toothpaste and brush often.

My personal Favorite:Crest Pro Health– available at most grocery, department or drug stores (Watch for coupons!)

Their claim: Crest Pro-Health Whitening Toothpaste helps reveal your natural white smile. It contains whitening ingredients to thoroughly clean surface stains and removes unhealthy buildup while brushing. Crest Pro-Health Whitening reduces surface stains by up to 80% and helps prevent new stains. Crest Pro-Health’s clinically proven active ingredient protects against gingivitis, plaque, cavities and tooth sensitivity.

Why I like it: Because it does exactly as it says. A whitening toothpaste is important to me, but as I have aged my teeth have become sensitive and some whitening toothpastes exacerbate this problem. Crest Pro-Health toothpaste really is the best of both worlds – whitening and sensitivity protection.

3. Flossing Picks. Okay, since we’re still on teeth, I admit, I hate flossing, but I keep hearing how important it is from both my dentist and dental hygienist friend. Not only does flossing prevent tooth decay and gum disease, but according to my friend, it prevents halitosis (bad breath). Hey, there’s a benefit I did not think about. It also reduces the risk of heart disease. A flossing pick makes the job so much easier than playing with messy string.

Their claim: Plackers Twin-Line™ brings true innovation to flossing. With its patented, exclusive flosser design that features 2 parallel lines of Super Tuffloss®, Plackers Twin-Line dental flossers effectively dislodge plaque and debris, trap it, and get it out for healthier, cleaner teeth and gums

Why I like them: The double-thread works much better than the single thread flossing picks. Also, the innovative bottom that folds out like a toothpick is great for getting behind my permanent retainer where floss can't reach.

4.Moisturizing Hair Products. As hair ages, it can become brittle, dull, dry and thin. Therefore, the shampoo we used at 18, might not be working at 50. If I would have used a moisturizing shampoo in my youth, the results would have been disastrous, but now, my hair appreciates the care. If you're like me and can't afford high-end salon products, you look for an alternative

My favorite: Tresemme Moisture Rich Shampoo and Conditioner

Their claim: Locks in moisture where your hair needs it most for optimal hydration and ultimate softness.

Why I like it: Well, of course, the price and the big bottle. But I also like the results. My hair is so soft and shiny, it doesn't feel like it's aging at all. In cosmotology school, my daughter told me that Tresemme won her test of over-the-counter shampoos for balanced PH. Whatever that means, it sounds good. I've always been a Tresemme fan.

5. A Pair of Go-to Earrings. You might think this is weird since I have been discussing mostly toiletries, but I swear by this one. As we age, it gets harder to look fresh-faced, but still there are days we just don't want or don't have time to fuss (ie. the gym, a quick trip to the grocery store). On ponytail and hat days, I might slap on a little blush and mascara, but I add one last thing that makes it look like I fussed way more than I did. My go-to earrings.

My favorite: Just a simple silver hoop - not too big, not too small.

Their claim: A hand-cut diamond pattern adds intriguing texture and shine to these fashion-forward earrings. Not too big. Not too small. Every piece of Lia Sophia Jewelry comes with a life-time guarantee.

Why I like them: Medium-sized hopes are so comfortable, I never know I'm wearing them. A nice quality jewelry that doesn't break the bank that are easy to put on with a nice safety snap in the back are the ticket. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a nice pair of go-to earrings. They take the thought out of looking good.

Embrace Yourself!

Sharon Stone said, "Ava Gardner was the most beautiful woman in the world, and it's wonderful that she didn't cut up her face. She addressed aging by picking up her chin and receiving the light in a better way. And she looked like a woman. She never tried to look like a girl."

Well, go Sharon, you have redeemed yourself with those statements. And so ladies, brush, floss, wash and moisturize and don't forget.... your go-to earrings!

Happy aging!

I use all of these but find the whitening toothpaste doesn't make any difference. I couldn't do without face moisturiser I've been using it since I was in my early thirties.
