If any age group has their pulse on the latest trends it has to be teens. They're prime for testing the fashion waters which makes them the perfect age for trying out the latest accessories. Thankfully, they completely change their look each season doing so without putting a major dent in the family budget. Today there are so many sources for inexpensive versions of chic fashion accessories teens can dabble to their hearts’ content. So, which accessories are the most popular among budding fashionistas?
Necklaces have always been in vogue and continue to be an important accessory for teens. They can choose from a tailored pearl necklace or dog collar to a bold gold chain or chunky, ethnic creation. All of these are great options for a young woman who is into fashion experimentation.
If your teen has yet to move into uncharted fashion territory she may just want to layer several metallic chain necklaces together. Or maybe simple is better like a gold or silver locket on a delicate chain. She can keep a photo of her current BF close to her heart.
Scarves are extremely popular among teenagers. There are so many styles, patterns and colors from which to choose she’ll no doubt want an entire wardrobe of them. Scarves are great because they serve many purposes as a head wrap, belt, shawl or neck warmer. Accessorizing a wardrobe has never been easier.
Scarves also come in a variety of fabric weights so they can be worn year-round. For summer, she can pair a sundress or shorts and a tee with a gauzy, fringed scarf tied around the neck as a loose muffler. When the weather gets colder she can take a plaid wool scarf and wear it like a shawl over a crisp, solid color blazer. Pair it with a miniskirt and loafers and you've got a preppie outfit. You can dress ‘em up or dress ‘em down. That's why scarves should be a part their accessory arsenal.
Every teen should also have at least one trendsetting funky handbag in her accessory wardrobe. Handbags speak volumes about our teens’ fashion sense. They tend to emulate what they see in magazines and on television so it stands to reason oversize bags are one of the most fashionable styles around.
Backpacks and large totes are great because they offer ample room to transport books, snacks, iPads, iPods and everything else that won’t fit into a regular handbag. Look for metallics, reptile and or shiny pleather with lots of big buckles, zippers and more.
Teen girls definitely need a few versatile belts to use with several outfits. Belts come in wide, narrow and in-between. Belt materials for teens include leather, suede, metals and fabrics. She needn't worry about choosing the perfect belt because each one is in style. Just flip through teen fashion magazines and you'll see them all.
These accessories can take a pair of jeans up a notch from plain to posh. The two most popular belts are skinny, hip and corset designs. They can be worn with a pair of dress pants or create a casual look by wrapping multiple skinny belts around the waist. As we all know, belts are the perfect accessory to complete an outfit. They instantly shape any piece of clothing by accentuating the waistline.
Multiple pairs of boots are an integral part of a teen's wardrobe. Back in the day we coveted a pair of Frye harness boots. They are still popular but there are many other fun styles from which to choose. Teens can rock ankle boots, biker boots, shearling, slouch, knee-highs and shoe booties.
You can even spot teens wearing shearling and ankle boots during the summer months. Certain boot styles can be worn with dresses, skirts, shorts, crops, slacks and jeans. When your teen says she needs more than a couple pair of boots, she’s not kidding.
Headbands are an easy way to change up a hairstyle while adding another fashionable accessory. They even serve a functional purpose. Sport headbands keep hair away from the face for that tennis date and add a bit of fashion panache at the same time.
Wide elastic headbands come in every color of the rainbow. Chic plastic headbands adorned with bows, flowers and rhinestones are a feminine accessory to complete almost any outfit.
Bangles are best but big, chunky elastic bracelets are cool too. Metallic cuffs, ID bracelets, charm bracelets and shimmering stack bracelets from the wrist to the elbow will surely command attention.
Don’t forget rubberized plastic statement bracelets to let people know what causes are important to your teen. You’ll find everything from braided strands of leather and string to bracelet watches gracing the wrists of teens.
One of the most important accessory is a pair of chic sunglasses. Make sure your teen’s shades provide eye protection as well as turn heads. 100% UV protection is best and an anti-glare component will make it easier on the drive to school or a day of beach volleyball.
In a pair of oversize, round sunglasses your teen will look just like her fashion idols. Black and tortoise shell frames are the most versatile but a pair of sunglasses in white or pastels will definitely shake things up. She shouldn't forget the ever-popular aviator style. Retro half-frames reminiscent of the 1940s and 50s will also make the grade with your teen.
Surely your teen has pierced ears so earrings are a natural accessory. Choose from elegant pearls, CZs, rhinestone studs, chandeliers, dangles or super big hoops. Beaded styles, fringe leather, feathers, crystals, acrylic, glass or metals are fashionable accents for any outfit or occasion.
Teens are so lucky, they can get away with earring styles the rest of us only wish we could wear. Basically anything goes when it comes to earrings for the young.Earring styles can be serious and elegant or purely fun and frivolous. Just remember to look for hypoallergenic posts and backs.

Thank goodness my girly-girl doesn't accessorize yet! I can barely afford to clothe the three of them! Yikes! I'm not sure how I escaped it but she has no idea that Uggs, Levis and Aeropostale even exist. I am saved :) Wonderful hub. -K

Leah, obviously things have changed a great deal since I was a teen! I'd even have a difficult time justifying that expense now. Yes, boys are much easier. You're very lucky you don't have to dress a house full of fashionistas! :)

My neighbor's teenage daughter is obsessed with boots - she recently bought a $150 pair. This makes me extremely glad I have boys! Haha. Scarves are really fun accessories - I have a few and I love wearing them in the fall/winter.

Oooh! I recall all of the gorgeous scarves I saw in Italy! CassyLu, I too have many scarves stored away in my dresser that need to see the light of day. Now that the weather has cooled down, I will incorporate them into my wardrobe. These accessory ideas are great for teens as well as for those of us that are a bit older. ;) I'm so glad you stopped by!
