Ingrown hairs; everyone has them, but nobody wants to deal with them. Legs say a lot about a person and there's nothing more attractive than smooth, glowing legs. Ingrown hair can be a real annoyance but fear not, there are ways to get rid of that pesky ingrown hair and have the perfect legs by summer!

How do you get ingrown hair?

Ingrown hair occurs when the hair turns sideways and grows back into the skin. A lot of times shaving is the culprit for ingrown hairs. Shaving can cause irritation and red bumps and of course ingrown hairs. Most of the time if left alone, ingrown hairs will go away on their own.

Medically, the only danger is that from time to time the area can become infected and pus-filled. This is not a common occurrence, but it can happen. More than anything, ingrown hairs are an inconvenience. They can cause red bumps, which are undesirable. The area can also become irritated and itchy which is a nuisance in itself.

Wanting to rid the body, and especially the legs of ingrown hairs is very common this day in time when appearances are so closely tied to self-esteem and self-identity. It's seen as not only a beauty measure but also a hygiene thing. One who removes ingrown hairs, is seen as one who takes care of oneself. This is very attractive this day in time. Whatever the reason, there are 10 tried and true ways of ridding your legs of ingrown hair from conventional to unconventional.

1. Pluck with Tweezers

The simplest method of removing ingrown hairs from your legs is to use tweezers. Tweezers are cheap and inexpensive. They come in a variety of shapes. Some tweezers have flat edges, while others have sharp edges. Both kinds will work, although you may be able to have more precision with a sharp edge, versus a flat edge, whichever you have on hand will do the trick.

Scars should not result from this method of removing ingrown hairs. It's advisable to warm the affected area first. Warming the area will help draw the hair closer to the surface. This makes it easier to remove the hair with minimal damage to the follicle or to the skin. After the area containing the ingrown hair has been sufficiently warmed, it is now time to take the tweezers and gently, work the hair to the top. This may take some time to get it to the top. If done properly, neither the skin nor the follicle will be damaged.

The idea is not to take the entire follicle out, as you do want the hair to grow again, but rather remove the offending ingrown hair to the point where the hair is no growing sideways into the skin.

This is a method that works best when you only a couple of ingrown hairs that are not accompanied by red bumps and irritation that you wish to get rid of as well. Tweezers will not do anything for bumps and irritation. If not done properly, tweezers can increase skin irritation. Although this is a great method for removing ingrown hairs, if this is a chronic problem, it might be advisable to look at another form of preventative treatment.

2. Shaving the proper way to prevent ingrown hair

The ideal way to handle ingrown hair to prevent it altogether. Prevent the itchy red bumps and irritation. Since ingrown hairs often result from shaving, the best way to prevent them is to shave in the proper way. Use a sharp razor. This will cause less irritation and pain. A dull razor can pull the hair as opposed to cleanly cutting it. This can cause razor burn. Moisturize or soften the skin before you shave. This will make the skin and hair more pliable.

Secondly, always shave in the direction that the hair grows and be sure to not pull the skin tight, as that will cause razor burn as well. You should also try not to shave too close. I know this seems to defeat the purpose, but running the razor directly over the skin will just increase the likelihood of ingrown hair. Obviously, this will not completely eliminate the instances of ingrown hair, it should significantly reduce the occurrence.

3. Salt as an exfoliant for legs with ingrown hairs

Sea salt, like salicylic acid, won't remove the ingrown hair, but it will help it to heal faster. Mixing salt with water will make an excellent paste. Sea salt is great for the skin. It cleans pores and prevents bacteria growth. Salt can also prevent acne. Who knew there were so many health benefits to using sea salt!

4. Sugar to prevent and rid your legs on ingrown hair

Sugar is a great exfoliant that will help bring ingrown hairs to the surface of the skin. Mix a half cup of olive oil with one cup of sugar. Exfoliating will also help reduce bumps, heal ingrown hairs fast, and prevent scars. All this is very important to have healthy, glowing skin.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar to remove ingrown hair and soothe bumps

Apple cider vinegar is a great home remedy for getting rid of ingrown hairs on your legs. Apple cider vinegar is strong and therefore, should be diluted with equal parts water. Failure to do so could further irritate the skin. Place a paper towel, cotton ball, or something similar soaked with apple cider vinegar over the ingrown hair for ten minutes. Afterward, rinse off the affected area with water. Repeat daily for 3-4 days until the ingrown hair is gone.

Apple cider vinegar is also a natural antiseptic, which can help the skin heal faster, reduce bumps, redness, irritation, and kill any infection which may have started.

6. Green tea bag compress

A green tea bag compress is a natural way to remove ingrown hairs. Dip the tea bag in warm water, in order to activate the tannins that are in green tea. Place the bag on the affected area. Do this once a day for a few days and you will an improvement not only in the fast disappearance of the ingrown hair but also a reduction in redness and irritation.

Green tea also contains antioxidants and naturally fights bacteria.

7. Salicylic acid to heal and prevent ingrown hairs on your legs

For those who do not wish to actually remove the ingrown hair immediately, but want to help it heal faster. Aspirin is an option. The main ingredient in Aspirin is salicylic acid, which is great in helping ingrown hairs heal faster. The acid reduces the amount of redness and irritation at the site. The best way to extract the salicylic acid is to crush the pills and add a little bit of honey so that it is spreadable. Once the mixture is ready, you can apply it to the affected area. Acne medication also contains salicylic acid and is an alternative to using aspirin. The salicylic acid should be applied several times a day for a few days before improvement is seen. As with all things of this nature, it is advisable to do a test area first, to make sure that you don't have any allergies or skin sensitivities to the ingredients.

8. Using an egg membrane to get rid of ingrown hair on legs

Yes! You read that right! An egg membrane is a method of removing ingrown hair. This process is very simple but will require patience. This method works by:

  1. Removing the membrane from a fresh, raw egg. The membrane is the thin layer that is located next to the shell on the inside of the egg.
  2. Once the membrane is removed, place it over the ingrown hair.
  3. Let the membrane dry.

When the membrane dries, it will shrink. After the membrane has dried and shrunk over the affected area, you can remove it. When you remove the membrane the follicle should come out with it. It's as easy as that. A new membrane will need to be used for each ingrown hair that you wish to remove.

Always exercise caution when handling raw eggs. Wash your hands appropriately and be sure not to put your fingers in your mouth after coming in direct contact with the raw egg.

9. Warm milk and bread compress to rid legs of ingrown hair

It may sound more like something you should see at a dinner table, but it's actually a great remedy for removing ingrown hairs from legs. Either on the stove or the microwave, warm up the milk. You don't need to use much milk, a cup will do the trick. Be careful not to get the milk too hot. You certainly don't want to scald your skin. When the milk is sufficiently warm, dip a piece of loaf bread in it and immediately place it on the affected area. You will leave the bread on the affected area until the piece of milk-soaked bread cools. This usually happens in a couple of minutes.

You will need to repeat this process for about 10 minutes. After which time, the pore should be opened up and you can remove the hair with a pair of tweezers.

10. Letting your hair grow

If you are a woman who doesn't mind going all naturale, then this remedy may be the one for you. It's easy. Do nothing. That's right, just let the hair grow for a few and weeks and the ingrown hair will break through the skin all on its own. This one doesn't require any effort on your part, but it does require a great deal of patience.
