Do you have yellow nails? Do you apply lots of nail polish? Do you feel embarrassed because your nails are yellow? If your answer is Yes, then you are probably looking for some quick home remedies to whiten them. Yellow-spotted nails are not attractive at all, especially in the summer, when we walk around without socks and shoes and love wearing cute sandals.
In the past, I used to keep my nails polished to hide the discoloration. I think many of us do the same because of lack of time, but it is not a good habit at all. Doing it will make the color even worse!! Nobody wants that!
Causes of Yellow Nails
There can be several reasons for yellow nails. It is important that you find them before implementing any home remedy. The nail bed can develop a yellow color because of lack of oxygen and/or iron. Other causes may include smoking, fungal infection, or due to hair dye.
Our nails need to breathe regardless whether they are real or artificial. If you keep your nails painted with nail polish, then eventually they will become yellow tinted. Nowadays, nail extensions have become so trendy that everyone wants them. However, they are also not good for our nails' health.
Exposure to sunlight for the long term can also cause yellow nails. You should preferably wear UV protected nail polish colors.
With some research, I have collected some easy to do home remedies for yellow nails. You just need to spare 5-10 minutes for them; not a big deal!!
My favorite home remedy for my nail care is olive oil. I always prefer massaging my nails with olive oil after removing nail lacquer. It keeps my nails beautiful and strong. My nails are now harder and stronger with the regular use of olive oil. I always recommend my friends to use it, if they want to improve the growth of their nails. Olive oil will always keep your nails healthy.
Lemon juice and baking soda
Make a thick paste of baking soda and lemon juice. Apply it on your fingernails for 10-15 minutes. Let them soak, then rinse with water.
You can buff your nails to remove nail discoloration, but you should use a nail buffer carefully. Buff your nails in one direction only. It improves nail growth but use it properly otherwise, you will end up with weak and broken nails. Nail buffers are easy to find on several websites selling nail art products.
Teeth Whitening Paste
You will to surprised to know that any whitening toothpaste can also help in nail whitening. All you need is toothpaste and a toothbrush. It is quite an easy method which you can apply daily. You have to apply the required amount of toothpaste on the brush and rub on wet nails. Wait for few minutes and wash your hands with clean water.
It is a home remedy which shows quick results, and one that you can easily add into your daily routine.
Base Coat Nail Polish
The easiest thing we can do to hide yellow nails is to apply nail polish. However, it will only hide the discoloration; it won’t disappear permanently.
I prefer to prevent the discoloration rather than hiding it. So. I always prefer to apply always apply a base coat polish on my nails before using any color nail polish. It will create a protective layer on the nails before dark colored nail polish. In effect, it will not allow colored polish to stain the nails.
Lemon Juice and Sea Salt
Lemon juice helps in removing marks and stains from your nails. Sea salt is a disinfectant that also helps in removing dry skin. You have to add two to three spoons of lemon juice to a half cup of sea salt dissolved in warm water. Then, keep your hands in this mixture for 10 minutes. You can also add few drops of baby oil to the mixture as it helps in softening your cuticles.
Nail Whitening Pencils
These days nail whitening pencils are available online and in local stores. You can use them to whiten your nail tips. They are easy to use, quick and inexpensive.
Smoking is one of the prime causes of yellow nails. However, it is difficult to quit the habit of smoking, but the benefits are unbelievable. Within a few weeks, if you do give up, your nails will start getting whiter and brighter.
Prevention is Better than Cure!!
It is well said that prevention is always better than cure. Anyhow, some of the causes of yellow nails like yellow nail syndrome and psoriasis are not easy to control. Nevertheless, you can quit smoking and avoid excessive use of nail polish for positive results.

My nails also get kind of yellow and I can't put on polish though I love polish. When I put polish on my nails they split sideways across the nail right down into the skin. I have to put tape on till they grow back out. You have a lot of good information on here.
