Easy Homemade Hand Cream Recipe

Easy Homemade Hand Cream Recipe

Inspired by Marie ~

When I was working in the cosmetic business in a leading Dublin department store, I was introduced to a lady called Marie.

She worked for Estee Lauder and to this day, 25 years later I will always remember how her hands felt as I shook her hand for the first time. I had, and probably never have since, felt hands so smooth and soft in my life.

Marie’s entire arms and face were like porcelain. Soft creamy skin without a mark, freckle, age spot, wrinkle or indeed any aging sign whatsoever. As we got to know each other we became friends, meeting for lunch, talking shop, and I was always curious to know her secret to her smooth creamy, supple skin, just like a newborn babies.

Her secret was exfoliation, moisturize and weekly hot oil treatments. Never sunbathe and always wear sunscreen, always wear rubber gloves washing up, never use harsh soap or liquid soap and plenty of drinking water.

I have never forgotten those secret tips and still going strong for Estee Lauder is Marie in Dublin. When I am in the city centre I always pop in to see her and her amazingly perfect hands. At 60 plus years of age her skin is still the same.

It was remembering Marie that led me to this recipe idea.

Hand Care ~

Our hands are often forgotten about when it comes to due care and attention.

By that I mean exfoliating them and treating them daily to a hand lotion or hand cream.

What is it about our “digits” we don’t find appealing when it comes to maintaining them?

Feet and hands are the least looked after when it comes to skin care, in my opinion.

Our face is given the no. 1 priority along with hair care, body care and oral hygiene.

The skin is our largest organ and should be treated the same way we try to keep our heart, kidneys and other vital organs healthy.

Our diet, lifestyle and climate have a huge impact on our health and organ maintenance and they are all invisible. The skin’s top layer the epidermis, is constantly on view for all to see and for all chemicals and elements to abuse.

I have to hold my own hands up (pardon the pun) to the fact that my own hands probably don’t get the looking after they deserve with all the abuse they have to go through daily.

Harsh chemical agents, dipping in and out of water, rough drying of the hands, being exposed continually to the outside elements and having dead skin accumulate without removing it with a scrub or exfoliating product, all take their toll to leave hands not so appealing for many.

In a nutshell, without proper maintenance, our hands will be subject to the following:

  • Sluggish Appearance
  • Dead Skin Cell Build Up
  • Skin Unable to Regenerate
  • Poor Circulation
  • Uneven Skin Texture
  • Dry Chapped Skin
  • Dark Age Spots More Noticeable
  • Split Skin
  • Dry Cuticles and Nails
  • Skin Infections
  • Bacterial Breeding Ground

Lavender, Patchouli & Mint Hand Cream

Luxurious Lavender Hand Cream ~

This recipe makes approximately 6 oz of hand cream so you may split it into small containers or use one glass jar.

1/3 cup Sweet Almond Oil

2 tbsp Coconut Oil

2 tbsp Olive Oil

3 tbsp Grated Beeswax

30 drops Lavender Essential Oil

1 (6 oz or 8 oz) Glass Jar

  • Add the sweet almond oil, coconut oil and olive oil to your saucepan and start to heat them over a medium / low setting until just warm (about 5-10 minutes). Remove from heat.
  • Add the grated beeswax and continue stirring until it has completely melted.
  • Pop the saucepan in the fridge for 10 minutes to start the cooling process.
  • Remove from fridge and add in your Lavender essential oil. You may feel you need a few extra drops but do not exceed a total of 35.
  • Stir in the fragrance combining it evenly and then pour the hand cream into your glass container or containers.
  • Allow to cool completely.
  • It will thicken as it cools and may be stored at room temperature or in the fridge.
  • Storing in the fridge will produce a thicker (stiffer) consistency.
  • Voila, one easy hand cream that will enable you to have a natural chemical free powerhouse treatment for your hands, you may use throughout the day.
  • You need only apply a small amount as it is oily but does absorb.
  • Combine with a hand scrub or hand exfoliator for the ultimate hand treatment.

Want to try a different essential oil? No problem, why not combine two such as Frankincense and Lavender or Sandalwood and Orange?

For a thinner consistency use less beeswax, approximately 2 tbsp and for a thicker cream use 4 tbsp of grated beeswax.

These make ideal gifts for men and women by playing around with the essential oils and base oil.

A perfect product to include into an at home spa party for the girls or boys!

For makeup craft idea for teens this hand cream is great for teens to make for themselves or as gifts for friends, or as a favor gift at their party.

I have been the same not using regularly and have noticed over the past 3-5 years age spots on my hands which I never had before so using some skin lightening, hand scrub and cream and find it all helps keep my hands so soft, smooth and clean feeling. Appreciate you pinning, thanks so much!

Claudia Porter on May 09, 2013:

As I have gotten older I find that my skin is dryer than it used to be. I have a few favorite hand creams, but I don't use them regularly. I know I should. Pinned.

Suzanne Ridgeway (author) from Dublin, Ireland on May 05, 2013:

Hi Nell,

Lovely to have you check this out! I was actually in the middle of reading one of yours skin care ones and i had to close down my laptop to travel up to Dublin for a few days! Now i'm here, i have to go back and finish reading it! Glad you enjoyed this one I am also into homemade beauty products and have done quite a few on all sorts. I love a nice hand cream and it is another one that is easily made, better for you and a fraction of the cost of commercial brands. Love to hear how you get on when you try it!! Appreciate your support on this!

Nell Rose from England on May 05, 2013:

Hi Suzie, I am into doing beauty stuff out of household materials so this is great! definitely going to try it, thanks, nell

Hi teaches,

Lovely as always to see you! Natural is so much better so i hope you may give a go sometime as a hand cream fan you will love it! Appreciate your comments greatly!

Suzanne Ridgeway (author) from Dublin, Ireland on April 28, 2013:

Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for dropping by! Homemade hand cream is great and without harsh dangerous toxins and chemicals it makes sense and gives you better results. Hopefully you will get to try it sometime, appreciate your comments and interest!

Dianna Mendez on April 28, 2013:

Thank you for the recipe. I learned a long time ago to keep my hands moisturized. If I do not, they crack and tend to get tiny slits. Love the homemade natural idea, much better than buying those harsh chemical-based products.

Rebecca Mealey from Northeastern Georgia, USA on April 28, 2013:

How clever this sounds! I have never heard of homemade hand cream, but I'll bet this will go over well. People are trying to get away from all the chemicals in cosmetics. Great job!

Suzanne Ridgeway (author) from Dublin, Ireland on April 28, 2013:

Hi Kathryn,

I find this site incredibly useful so I am thrilled you checked out your usual brand. it makes for interesting and surprising reading, don't you think? I was certainly shocked by some that have excellent "reputations" and it just shows you how false some of their claims are. Thanks for letting me know, appreciate you taking the time to look at the link.

Suzanne Ridgeway (author) from Dublin, Ireland on April 28, 2013:

Hi SilverGenes,

Many thanks for your visit and comments! Great to know you enjoyed this recipe and are keen to give it a go! Appreciate your interest!

Kathryn from Windsor, Connecticut on April 28, 2013:

Wow, I just checked out the link on "Brand Rating", and the hand cream I use most often is rated at #3. That is terrible! It has a bad environmental rating, and several chemicals that could be dangerous (medium health risk). That is nice to know.

SilverGenes on April 28, 2013:

Great information, Suzie! Thank you. I'll be trying this one for sure :)

Suzanne Ridgeway (author) from Dublin, Ireland on April 24, 2013:

Hi Kathryn,

The ads change with the countries too so you never know what it will throw up just hope they start being a bit more related!!

Kathryn from Windsor, Connecticut on April 23, 2013:

If nothing else, some of the ads are amusing. But most of the time the ads seem to cater to the individual person- it is almost creepy at times!

It seems like most of the time the ads are approproate, at least.

Suzanne Ridgeway (author) from Dublin, Ireland on April 23, 2013:

Hi janet,

many thanks for commenting! Marie was definitely someone that stuck out for me during my years in the cosmetic business and someone I never forgot with her incredible hands. Hope you get to give this a try!

Janet Giessl from Georgia country on April 23, 2013:

I have problems with dry skin on my hands and always need a hand cream. A homemade one is a good alternative to all the chemical ones. A very interesting hub. I liked the personal story at the beginning.

Suzanne Ridgeway (author) from Dublin, Ireland on April 23, 2013:

Hi Kathryn,

Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. Glad to hear you enjoyed it and have beeswax on your list now!

You may enjoy my latest on hand scrub! The ads are crazy often with no rhyme or reason to them! Wish we had some control on the ads that are visible. Appreciate your comments, interest and support as always!!

Suzanne Ridgeway (author) from Dublin, Ireland on April 23, 2013:

Hi Rose,

many thanks for your interest here! if you wish you can leave out the fragrance Lavender in this one. Hope you give it a try sometime, appreciate your comment!

Kathryn from Windsor, Connecticut on April 23, 2013:

This sounds pretty simple. I would just need to get beeswax. That is going on my list! Thanks for sharing this with us. Now I am in the mood to exfoliate and moisturize my hands. I do it on occasion, and it always leaves them feeling soft and supple.

Hahaha, one of the ads I see on here is for "chemicals and equipment" from Grainger. I think this article is about getting away from the chemicals, not buying them. Google is not always smart.

Rose Clearfield from Milwaukee, Wisconsin on April 23, 2013:

This sounds lovely! Hand cream is one of my must have beauty staples. I use unscented most of the time, but this may inspire me to switch things up sometimes.

Suzanne Ridgeway (author) from Dublin, Ireland on April 23, 2013:

Hi Suzie

Home made hand cream, now that's just the ticket for me. After using butter and sandpaper to get rid of the oil and grease, Hand Cream is just what I need.

What about a hub on how to properly apply hand cream?????

Well who knows there might be a process and you know I love processes, ha.

Great hub, great formatting.

Voted up, ticked and shared.
